Xbox 360 flaw makes machine hackable
A FLAW in the Xbox 360 DVD firmware could allow the forces of darkness in the hacking world to install custom firmware in the machine. According to Xboxic, here, the hack has been found by a bloke who goes by the handle ‘TheSpecialist’ and has found a few firmware hacks before.
Mr TheSpecialist said that the hack enables a person to gain full control of what the DVD will accept and would mean that the drive could gain the capability to boot backups of original game DVDs. The goal is getting a 360 to do a backup booting and according to Mr TheSpecialist a dark and sinister hacker Illuminati is close to doing this.

the title makes this sound like a bad thing... but its GOOD! HURRAY! However since I love xbox live odds are this option won't be available to me since they always patch to check for this stuff and then ban you forever from live.

The problem with this hack is that it relies on an actual hardware code writer, which isn't easy, and not worth it in the long run.
All MS would need to do is require a firmware update from time to time, which would require another edit to the firmware code to remove the mediacheck flag and then "re-flash" your firmware. This would in turn become very tedius and not worth it to anybody that wouldn't enjoy having to re-flash his box on average every couple months or so. NTM, the amount of money it would take to have an expert re-flash the box everytime the firmware is updated by MS.

Untrue. The drive will be software flashable via PC on SATA. The tools are being programmed just now.
Microsoft is going to have a really tough time trying to counter this. The only way they'll be able to do it is by reflashing the drive after every reboot and that will be dangerous for the drive.
