Microsoft to Nokia: 1 Billion to avoid Android

Back in February, Nokia and Microsoft formed a "strategic partnership" to create products and services that will create a big impact in the smartphone arena. New information has come to light about this partnership.As Bloomberg reports, Microsoft negotiated with Nokia about forming a partnership in an attempt to keep Nokia from partnering with Google and its Android mobile operating system. Microsoft will be paying Nokia more than 1 billion dollars to create and promote Windows Phone based Nokia handsets.
Seems like a desperate move to keep Nokia from joining Google. For 1 billion dollars, who wouldn't want to go exclusive with Microsoft.
Once we begin seeing Windows Phone powered Nokia handsets, we will see if Microsoft's investment paid off. This partnership is supposed to provide Microsoft the needed boost to compete with Google's Android Operating system and Apple's iOS lineup.

Nokia had no option but to go with a 3rd party OS at this point. iOS is closed, and Android would have made them another generic provider of me-too handsets, competing mainly on price. WP7 sets them apart with something different and worthwhile.
