newwink.gif I've tried to install sp1 using various bulds and always get the same thing..Setup starts and it looks normal, then all of a sudden it just stops. mad.gif no errors like I've read about all over the place, just a small box that says service pack setup cancelled. I've reinstalled my default boot screans, I have about 6 gb's of free space on my main c drive. I've never installed any prior beta build. Only the wmp9 thats been floatin around, and by the way I have no problems with that. build 2848 works fine. for now,,, At the windows update site it all looks good so I installed the IE6 sp1 update first, and no problem. I reboot and when I try the sp1 express install, I get the same thing. It downloads, setsup and just stops. same as before when I tried yesterday. No other errors have come up. just a cancelled setup. OK. I'm running a legal build=
Version = "5.1.2600.0 (xpclient.010817-1148) I took that from system info. I am Lost. Also Ive been snoopin around the XP forums everywhere and this one has always been of the most help. Thanks in advance. OK ?? any ideas ? should I reset my product key ?? Does the install of a not so legit office 2000 premium have anything to do with this ?

Same thing happened to mine, the oobe.exe wouldn't launch, thus it would roll back the sp1 install! Just reinstalled winblows, something on the os corrupted!

Lumber, I hearrrrrrd dat. and now that all is updated and fresh, I have noticed nothing but good things.
faster reboot,no more big a** list of xp hot fixes with a variety of different icons in control panel, LoL...I have an Athlon 1.2 that always ran a little warm and now the cpu temp is on average about four degrees cooler. The fixes in IE6 improved my browsing somewhat. It seems to load pages smoother and quicker. Some of this snappiness is due to the fresh install but check this out. Before I did this I had to turn off my dsl modem each time I rebooted because if I left it running, start up would hang like a b***h. That is working properly now. Everything is working great and I'm glad I did the upgrade. I did get a bunch of ideas for things at this site in these forums. Thanks to all who posted there problems and patches and whatnot... This is a very nice forum with some fun sections also. rolleyes.gif
Geeeee, You folks here at msfn are da bomb....hehehe

One more thing please,
I have a 40gig hard drive and only three partitions. I'm using 512mb pc133 and I would like to get some Ideas from you guys about setting the page file. Let xp handle it ?? Use a fixed permanent swap file or semi permanent? My system runs like a bat outa hell when I disable virtual memory but programs like photoshop need the paging file to function, right ??
Anyway, I would like to get some tips if possible.
Thanks,
MrDak smile.gif

OK,
I'm open for some suggestions on this page file issue so I can do some experimenting. Heres a guide http://www.ia-stud.hiof.no/~andreasp/index.htm I used this method of configuring the page file back when I was using just 256megs and it worked out very nicely so now I'm a little confused about min. and max with 512megs. with 256 I would do this, min.=100or128 and max.=256
now with 512, xp automatically set the min.to 768 and the max.to 1536 blink.gif doesn't that seem like a waiste of space ? I'm not having any problem with those numbers but shouldn't I be using less virtual memory and more actual ? dry.gif ? Jacks formula seems to make good sense.
If anyone with a similar setup seeez this, please post yer thoughts.
mega thanks to FthrJack.
