Went and installed Any Video Converter program (avc-free.exe). It installed ok but won't run, complains of missing dll "mfc42U.dll".

Evidently mfc42u.dll first made its appearance on winNT.

Is there any way of solving this? I tried dloading the dll and doing Regsvr32 on it, but that doesn't work.

Where did you put the file?

Just place it in your system folder and try to run the app again..

Already tried that. Didn't work.

From google search I think that the dll might need some other updated stuff not available in win98. At any rate I've not found a solution and it seems that this question has been asked many times...

Actually you should get an error similar to this, if MFC42U.DLL is installed properly:
QUOTE
This application or DLL cannot be loaded on Win 95 or on Win 3.1. It takes advantage of unicode features only available on Win NT.

As a great number of threads around, this one has not been finalized:
http://www.msfn.org/board/MFC42DLL-Unicode...lem-t35158.html

So we do not know if the suggested solution may work or not, however, seen also here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/259403/en-us
QUOTE
Mfc42.dll 6.0.8665.0 972KB (995,383 bytes)
Mfc42u.dll (Windows NT only) 6.0.8665.0 972KB (995,384 bytes)

that MFC42.DLL and MFC42U.DLL have the same size, a try worth making is the following:
1) download and install the VCREDIST
2) make a copy of MFC42.DLL, renaming it to MFC42U.DLL
3) try registering it
4) try running the app with your fingers crossed... newwink.gif

At worst you will have latest VC components updated and the desired app still not working....unsure.gif, since your mileage may vary, make sure to have backed up the system correctly before attempting the above. ph34r.gif

P.S.: and please report back (hopefully smile.gif) success or (unfortunately sad.gif) defeat, so other people may find this thread and either use the solution or avoid the hassle

Did all above. No joy i'm afraid.

"Error Starting Program. The videoconvertor.exe file is linked to missing export MFC42U.dll: 1560".

Click and then second error message: "A device attached to the system is not functioning".

Another approach:
It seems like older versions did support Windows 98 unsure.gif

Search on google for
QUOTE
"Any Video Converter" "Windows 98"

a number of links state compatilbility with Win98/Me.

You may want to write the Author and ask if an older, Win98 compatible version is available.
