Still wondering if an unofficial Win95 Q249824 VOLTRACK.VXD patch will be made. MS KB article 249824 DOES mention Windows 95.

This does not look like patch from Microsoft. Please look inside. This is just binary patch - but from what source?

I got the patch from anonymous source.
Sender states it's from MS, so I created installer for it with Iexpress [same style as all other MS patches, just the QFE*.* files are missing ;)].
Enjoy.
This is the explanation:

Quote

I am attaching the corrected KRNL386.EXE file that Microsoft now has had for
many weeks. I don't think they are going to address this insidious bug in the
original KERNEL anytime soon. It would be great indeed if you could host this
and the other file on your web site.

PS.: Although 32-bit programs call code in KRNL386.EXE through KERNEL32, GDI32
-> GDI.EXE, and USER32 -> USER.EXE, normally they are not at all affected by
the buggy code. Only certain 16-bit programs call the buggy code in KRNL386.EXE
directly.

Really i'm lost... Should i remove or stay with my current check code?
As I understand, this patch does not check icon before loading, it removes theoretical exploit possibility, preventing buffer overrun.
MDGx, maybe you should add OS checking code? I don't think that it will be good to install it on other OSes.

Your anonymous source has sent you a file that is 100% not from Mirosoft. It is binary patched version 4.10.1998. It is interesting that the internal string "Windows 98" was changed to "Windows 98H". You can also note that the "SpecialBuild: QFE" is omitted.

Really, it looks like hexed (even resources aren't changed) file. But why it can't be from MS?
It looks like high quality patch anyway.

Do you think that people in Microsoft lost the source code and are hexing their files??

Yes, everything is possible, but ...

What VOLTRACK.VXD do you mean? 4.10.1999 from Q234697 that is intended for Win98 PC-AT Japanese? Or some else?

Maybe they have not lost the code for those files but these are most likely to have been written long time ago in assembler and compiled with MASM. Those who wrote them may now be dead (there are some legends about that) or more simply not working for Microsoft anymore for obvious reasons.

So far as I have grasped reading posts at the Win32Asm Forum and the Masm Forum, it is very difficult if not often impossible for even highly skilled and experienced assembly progammers to make sense of even small snippets of code someone else wrote if is not exhaustively documented line by line.

So yes I think it is very possible MS could be hexing their files.

Maybe. I have different view to understanding of the assembly code - it is usualy not so bad, I have disassembled and understood many different codes written it assembler. Much worse it is with programs written in unknown high level language.

But back to the krnl386 - if somebody is hexing the file, it means to understand the binary code, and it means to convert it to assebmbler. And If I modify the assembler code and have the source code, then why to use hex editor instead of ascii editor + MASM?

As I wrote, I believe that it is possible, but it seems to be very unlikely to me that somebody who has source code would not use it in case of code modification. BTW, my guess is that krnl386.exe source code is C, maybe with fragments in MASM, not pure MASM.

What VOLTRACK.VXD do you mean? 4.10.1999 from Q234697 that is intended for Win98 PC-AT  Japanese? Or some else?

Petr
Actually that is the English VOLTRACK.VXD from 98SE [original 4.10.1998] patched to ver 4.10.1999 and probably fixed the same way the Japanese one is. [?]
These are only speculations, I'm waiting for this person to send more details.
What's important is that the way it is VOLTRACK.VXD locked up 3 computers I tried it on with a "Windows protection error". :(
BTW:
I've tested further VOLTRACK.VXD 4.90.3000 from WinME CD, but it doesn't work correctly, it doesn't read most of the CDs or DVDs I've tested in the 2 drives [1 CD-RW + 1 DVD-RW] installed in my PC. Bummer. ;-(

I've recreated KRNL386.EXE 4.10.1999 [English] patches to include OS version detection for Q891711 bug:

Updated unofficial Q891711 + Q234967 patches [both English] = they all work now:

This the scoop about patched KRNL386.EXE 4.10.1999 [sent by patch author]:

Quote

I did not obtain patched KRNL386.EXE from Microsoft.
I patched its code many years ago after random crashes that could not be reproduced or explained began to affect my work.
Microsoft Windows98-KB891711-v2-ENU.EXE patch still needs to be installed.
Only the files in Windows98-KB891711-v2-ENU.EXE protect against the icon and cursor vulnerability.
KRNL386.EXE allows Microsoft patch to work without crashing the system.
The scoop about the fixed VOLTRACK.VXD [sent by patch author]:

I am attaching the correct VOLTRACK.VXD file for Win98.
The one I sent you before by mistake could not work - it was an earlier attempt at fixing the problem described in Knowledge Base Article KB234697 and it created an incorrect stack frame.
Fixed VOLTRACK.VXD 4.10.1999 [patched by the same person who sent KRNL386.EXE] works on the 2 PCs I've tested, with both 98 FE + 98 SE.
Note that VOLTRACK.VXD patch is English, NOT Japanese.

I made 1 installer for 98 FE and 1 for 98 SE [total of 4 = see links above] because the "TargetWin9xVersion=" directive in the SED file [I used IEXPRESS.EXE from XP SP2] allows to install only on 1 specific OS build.
This line:
TargetWin9xVersion=4.10.2222
allows to install only on 98 SE.
This line:
TargetWin9xVersion=4.10.1998
allows to install only on 98 FE.

Q234697 article title is "Computer Hangs When Viewing Empty ORB Removable Drive in Japanese Windows 98".

So what is corrected by this new VOLTRACK.VXD if it is not for Japanese Windoes 98? And why Diskvsd.vxd is missing?

Didn't get that info.
I'll ask, and will let you know.
