HFSLIP, Windows 2000 and 'Service Pack 5' Hotfixes

Recommended Posts

I have not yet tried to slipstream the below listed hotfixes, but intend to have a go soon. Has anyone else? I hope to be able to include them in the Updates page (and also perhaps WildBill's unofficial updates, but this post doesn't address them).

The hotfixes below for Windows 2000 SP4 (Pro and/or Server) contain files which seem to be newer than those available from the updates on the Windows 2000 Updates page I maintain. These hotfixes were issued to address specific issues, and were not included in SP4 or the later SP4 Update Rollup 1. Many of the KB articles for these hotfixes mention 'SP5'. Probably several (if not all) of these 'new' files were included in MSFN member Gurglemeyer's Unofficial SP5 project. Most of these are available upon request from Microsoft.

I've made two lists for the same set of hotfixes. The first is a simple list with the KB number for each, linking to its article. The second is a more detailed list, showing the relevant files contained in those hotfixes of the first list. In the detailed list, those files in green are the latest files I'm aware of for Windows 2000 (excluding files from subsequent unofficial updates), by version number. I know that version number alone is not enough to determine whether or not any given file is the latest release.

If you're aware of any errors here, please correct them. Please take notice of the notes in red.

And sorry that this looks a bit messy.

873437:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=873437

(install ONLY AFTER 873437)

...

Mmmhhhh...

Perhaps you meant "831375"?

Indeed I did. Thanks for pointing out my error. I've updated the list.

Actually, the note is possibly redundant in the context of HFSLIP. At least, I can just say that I found that manually installing 873437 before 831375 gave my system some kind of general protection error (if I recall correctly), and the OS wouldn't finish the boot process.

I have slipstreamed all of these

No problems to report about slipstreaming WillBill's unofficial updates?

No sir everything workings fine on my end.

All the newer versions replace the old ones and from what I see working properly.

Thanks. Good stuff. I'll think about how to include them on the Windows 2000 Updates page.

I just requested a bunch of these hotfixes, so microsoft let me download the packages.

Now, I find two exe into the packages, one named as usual (Windows2000-KB872955-x86-ITA.EXE) and another with a `symbols' add (Windows2000-KB872955-x86-ITA-symbols.EXE). Am I supposed to use them together?

Another question about KB838417: the italian page suggest two fixes, one labeled as `sp5' and another as `latest'! Which one is needed?

Here's the link, thank you.

Just use only the one that is named as usual.

I'll have to get back to you on that. I suspect one of those files is just some sort of registry fix, but don't quote me. Meanwhile, if you've requested and downloaded both, you could try running a Command Prompt from the folder in which you saved the two updates, with the "-x" parameter, which will extract the contents of those files, so that you can compare their respective contents for date and build number. So for example, you would use a command like this:

Windows2000-KB838417-x86-ENU.EXE -x

"Windows2000-KB838417-x86-ENU.EXE" being the update's filename in this case.

You're welcome. :)

I'm not sure, but I suspect that the reason that usbser.sys is missing from the 'latest' update is because usbser.sys is for Windows 2000 Server. If you don't have Server (sorry - I don't recall whether you have specified in your posts  ), I'm not sure whether or not the file will be slipstreamed. If this bothers you, then you need to speak to others here more experienced than myself for advice. :)

Well, I've got a Professional edition. Anyway, I'd like to include only the very latest build of these .sys files...

Well, I slipstreamed Windows2000-KB838417-x86-ITA.EXE sp5 release and the three files

  • usbd.sys ver. 5.0.2195.7008
  • usbhub.sys ver 5.0.2195.7006
  • usbser.sys ver. 5.0.2195.7006

are onto the disc image, although usbser.sy_ will not be installed.

@Bristols:

about your windows2000 updates page, I just slipstreamed Q828026 and I can confirm it is unneeded. As reported here, on windows 2000 it provides

  • msdxm.ocx ver 6.4.9.1128
  • wmp.dll ver 9.0.0.3075

Well, msdxm.ocx is updated by KB891861 which provides ver 6.4.9.1129, and wmp.dll is updated by KB979402 which provides version 9.0.0.3367.

Hi brutus1234,

Thanks for your report. :) I have updated the 2000 Updates page accordingly - hopefully it will go online soon.

However. Although I have made 828026 obsolete on the page, I have a reservation, which is that I believe 828026 is still good for WMP 7.1. Now, the 2000 Updates page doesn't consider that anyone wants to slipstream WMP 7.1. Windows 2000 ships with 7.0, and I'm not sure exactly about the upgrade path to 7.1. Indeed, I have no idea whether or not anyone would even want to slipstream 7.1 instead of 9, and I know no good reason. I know that the Updates page is not totally comprehensive, for historical (and good) reasons (decisions made before my involvement). But if I come to learn of a good reason to slipstream 7.1, I'll look into providing links to the relevant files. Probably it has been talked about before here. To anyone who knows: please chime in. :)
