Can Win2k Server shutdown XP workstations

Recommended Posts

If there are 5 WinXP workstations joined to a Win2k Server domain, is it possible to shut them down (power down, not simply log off) centrally from the server, and at a specified time at night?

Can this be done and how?

Thanks in advance. :hello:

You can use psshutdown from sysinternals.com to perform this task. Just include it in a small script that runs as a scheduled task.

The syntax would be something like the following:

psshutdown -s -t 05 -f \\remotecomputername

You can get psshutdown HERE.

I use many of sysinternal's free utilities every day. I highly recommend that you check out their offerings, particularly the utilities in their PSTools package (of which psshutdown is but one). And no, I am in no way affiliated with sysinternals.com, just a big fan. :thumbup

does it go thru the windows firewall ok? do u need to put inclusions in for it via GP or will it work without exclusions?

I'm trying to recall if it requires exclusions under ICF. I just can't remember for sure. If it does, just run it against a firewalled system, then check the log for the blocked traffic. Make your exception(s) accordingly.

Many thanks to your replies, esp. to ravashaak for the details. :thumbup

JPry565: can you please be more specific on the GP setting? I thought it can only log off, thanks!

it_ybd: best of luck for your recovery. :hello:
