SOFTWARE THAT SUPPORTS WINDOWS 98 SECOND EDITION

Here you will find a list of software that supports Windows 98 Second Edition (Win98SE).

For Freeware / Shareware / Open Source programs a link to a download source will be provided.
Note: Do NOT post links to illegal download sources for Commercial Software / Cracks / KeyGens / Warez etc!!!

To find older versions of commercial software,, try searching places like http://www.amazon.com and others, will show second hand and old stock software. Auction sites are also useful but are often plagued with sophisticated piracy!

KEY:
LAST = Last version of software to support Win98SE
ONGD = On Going Development. This software is still being developed and still supports Win98SE

FREE = Freeware (Completely Free)
SHAR = Shareware (Free trial)
$$$$ = Commercial Software. Must be purchased

???? = Unknown at the present time.

Please post any details of current or the last version of software and utilities that work on Win98SE.
Please for the software:
- if it is the LAST or ONGD
- if it is FREE, SHAR or $$$$
- a URL for where it can be downloaded (FREE and SHAR) or purchased ($$$$)

Online Virus Scanners
With less and less updated Virus Scanners for Windows 98 available, users may find online Virus Scanners their best form of protection. Here is a list of those that still support Windows 98. Note: Some require Internet Explorer 6 to operate.

Symantec Security Check (Virus Detection and Security Scan) - http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/WelcomePage.asp
Eset Online Scanner - http://www.eset.com/onlinescan
McAfee Free Scan - http://home.mcafee.com/Downloads/FreeScanDownload.aspx

To save confusion, a list of software that works after installing the KernelEX upgrade should be listed on the first page of the KernelEX thread.

I wasn't only referring to KernelEx, but to other system upgrades, such as RichEdit, gdi.exe/gdi32.dll, user.exe/user32.dll, msvcp71.dll/msvcr71.dll (VC2003 runtime), msvcp80.dll/msvcr80.dll (VC2005 runtime that needs installation; doesn't work by only copying those 2 dlls to the %system% folder) and similar. Heck, some applications may not work (correctly) even if gdiplus.dll is missing. Not to mention others that depend on unicows.dll...

Now that's what I call a readable list! thumbup.gif
I really like your rearrangement!
There are a few errors or changes needed in the list (in red bold italics) though...
I've changed some of the URLs (that I posted earlier) for some $$$$ software since they are not really applicable to that version...
(I've trimmed the lines to reduce space so don't copy the whole line. Just make the edits I've highlighted)

Media Players + Encoders + Codecs
LAST - FREE - Apple QuickTime 6.5.2 Player
LAST - $$$$ - CyberLink PowerDVD 6 --- http://www.cyberlink.com/
LAST - SHAR - GoldWave 4.26
LAST - FREE - Skype 1.4.x* (3.5.0.239 works without Video) - - - "http://www.skype.com <<Glitch in URL

I haven't seen my favorites security software around here, so I think it's time to post instead of reading:

Best Firewall around:
LAST - FREE- Jetico v1
http://www.jetico.com/jpfirewall.htm

Best HIPS around:
LAST - FREE - System Safety Monitor 2.0.8.583
http://www.syssafety.com/

Both of them working flawlessy on my WinME box (Celeron 650Mhz, 246 MB RAM)

In my opinion, combined together, they form the strongest and lightest security suite available on 9x Systems.

To be honest, I never used any firewall or resident antivirus on my 98SE system, and I'm still alive and kickin'. No router or any other fancy stuff.
The only protection I've ever used was Ad-Aware (1.06 R1 being the latest usable on Win9x) and Spyware Blaster, combined with occasional scans from Trend Micro's Sysclean Package (requires the pattern signature package), only when I suspected something fishy.

Opps! blushing.gif A correction to my correction (forgot to highlight the changes! D'oh!) - also some other changes:

Others > move to a new Connectivity section:
LAST - $$$$ - SmithMicro HotFax MessageCenter 5.0.1 - - - http://www.smithmicro.com/

Others > move to Windows Utilities (note spelling!) section:
LAST - $$$$ - SmithMicro CheckIt Diagnostics 7.1.1.5 - - - http://www.smithmicro.com/

Others > move to Programming section:
ONGD - FREE - ActiveState ActivePerl 5.8.8.822 - - - http://www.activestate.com/Products/activeperl

Along with ActivePerl, can you add to Programming section the Perl Toolkit (from earlier post):
ONGD - FREE - Prima Perl Toolkit 1.23 - - - http://www.prima.eu.org/

You could add to a new Connectivity section the following (from earlier post):
LAST - FREE - Microsoft ActiveSync 3.8 (3.8.0.5004) - - - http://www.hpcfactor.com/support/syncsoft/activesync/ (not posted at MS...)
Works nicely with Pre-Windows Mobile 5.0 devices like 2000, 2002, 2003, 2003SE and still does wireless sync! ActiveSync 4+ is a major step backwards!

In Windows Utilities section (from earlier post):
LAST - $$$$ - Symantec Norton SystemWorks 2005 8.03 (2005.8.3.15) - - - http://www.symantec.com

galahs, you may want to put a note for those who want to locate older $$$$ software to buy, that searching places like amazon.com and others, will show second hand and old stock software. Auction sites are also useful but are often plagued with sophisticated piracy!

Rock on Windows 98SE! welcome.gif

One little remark, Xnview is not a multimedia tool, it's a picture viewer/converter just like Irfanview. It should be listed there.

Great idea
This thread is a very good idea as it allows us to list fully functional software for 98 and share our experiences of it. Some software will work on one machine and not on another due to configuration of the PC. As anyone thought of doing the same for 95 OSR2?.http://www.msfn.org/board/style_emoticons/default/whistling.gif

@ galahs:

I think you should group Microsoft IntelliPoint and Kensington under a new heading: Mouse Drivers

You did not yet add HDD Health, from my last post, here's some more info: its a S.M.A.R.T. monitor for HDDs
It's the LAST FREE v. 2.1 beta, build 159.
You also did not include PopUpKiller, but don't do it just yet, because I've just found out the project was resurrected and there is a new version I mean to test. About it, more later.

Keep on the great work! thumbup.gif This topic sure rocks, and you do too! thumbup.gif
