Western Digital. Make sure you get a 8mb cache. Also I'm pretty sure WD still gives 3 year warranty on ALL their drives but double check.

Well, for anyone interested, this week you can buy a Seagate ATA/100 7200 RPM 8 MB cache 120 GB for $129.99 - $70 MIR = $59.99. When all is said and done, after paying taxes, you'll have a nice 120GB for just about $70. I just bought one yesterday, installed it without a problem.
Oh yeah, you can pick it up at CompUSA, or from
http://www.compusa.com , but you probably ave to pay shipping from there. Anyway, still a good buy!

Where do you buy your hard drives MeDieViL ? Media Markt has a good deal on the Seagate Barracuda Kit for € 110.00 (120 GB - ATA 100 - 7200 RPM - only 2 MB cache) includes IDE cable and rails. A few of us here bought the Seagate and it is a quiet drive with a damper that works great for music recording. Since we bought ours I have seen the OEM ATA 133 model cheaper at
snogard.de for € 99.90. That is less than € 1 per Meg. No kit with that OEM model!
Media Markt also has a Samsung OEM model without/kit for € 159.00 (160 GB - 7200 RPM), but I can't remember if it is ATA 100 or ATA 133. There is a Western Digital 120 GB - 7200 RPM - 2 year Gewähr for € 119.00.
alternate.de (retail store in Mannheim) has good deals and good information on every product with photos. I get a lot of stuff from there. The weekly special is Samsung SP1614C, S-ATA, 160 GB, 7200rpm, 8MB € 139.00. That is a better deal than the one at Media Markt, IMHO.
Also check out
UKonline.de (Ramstein - Kaiserslautern) and ask for Ewe (speaks German). Tell him MSNwar sent you.
Hope this helps.

Stupid mail in rebates. Screw them.
Anyways there have been so many benchmarks on drive comparer-sent that shows the performance between all drives is no different.
Now this is providing the HD are all 8mb cache. Of course if you compared a 2 MB cache to a 8mb you will see a great improvement. With what Aaron posted, it's basically the luck of the draw. I have, in the last 15 years, never had a HD crash on me or gone bad.
Now with that said, last week Hitachi (Deskstar) went dead on me in my home server. This is the first time I have ever used them and only reason why I got this drive was because it was a deal breaker; 2 40gig 7200 for $40 bucks.
Anyways I personally would only use the following three drives and nothing else:
Western digital
Maxtor
Seagate
I prefer them in that order also, but it all depends on the price they run for. I grabbed my 200gig 8MB Cache for $135 bucks brand new. Can you beat that? (excluding crappy mail in crap)

I have three Maxtor drives in my house, and they all work pretty fine.
- The oldest has been running for the last 4 years and still works great.
- The other is 15 months old. I tried it the whole way, since it was my school drive. (it was in a portable tray). I dropped it several times on the ground, carried it in the metro (huge electro-magnetic field), carried it in my not so impermeable backpack, and it still works great!
- The latest is the one that gave me little trouble, but I sent it to Mactor for warranty. I filled in the RMA request on Friday night and I had a new drive on Tuesday morning. New drive works great, and the service is good too.
I'd go with Maxtor.

I think Maxtor/Western Digital are the way to go. I never had any failures with these. I had a 8 GB Hitachi that failed on me...

I recommend Maxtor and Samsung. WD tend to die after a few months here in the tropics. Maybe it's the heat or something...
People here don't want WD because of that. A friend of mine has a Samsung that's over 4 years old, and works perfectly!

Not too easy to find Samsungs, usually come part of a full system. I recommend them highly, very reliable and silent, moreso than Maxtor. Havent had much experience with WD.
