I must of done a couple of dozen 2k installs, but this is the first time I had one hang on "Saving settings"
I rebooted once, it picked up before that portion of the install process, but it again hung at the same spot.

I'm using a nLite edited 2k install w/ sp4 slipstreamed. I have used nLite with XP with no issue, but this was the first time I used it with 2k.  This is on a systen that has a different HDD and video card, but the same PS, MB, processor & memory. I haven't tested the HDD with the utility from the manufacture for any errors yet, but I formatted ok through the Windows install.

As far as stopping services from running, would any of that have anything to do with the install, namely stopping at 'Saving settings'??

Any ideas??
nuhi
Attach the preset so that I can try it. This issue is known, cause is any error during installation while keeping SFC enabled. You can disable it in the Options - Patches, but also finding the error during installation is a better choice.
videobruce
I tried another session and the same thing. This time I didn't do as many custom settings as before and less drivers.
Here are the 'presets' from both sessions:

While we are at it, I looked over the text and saw all the references to foreign languages and keyboards that I wanted removed. Did I do it wrong or should they be listed?
videobruce
I'm confused about your response regarding SFC. This never happened durning XP, or is it this beta version I have??
nuhi
I tried it and unfortunately it didn't hang. Which brings to conclusion that maybe this works in combination with hardware drivers being installed.
I'm trying all kinds of presets reporting this issue and still haven't came to any conclusion, seems very weird. Gonna compare with old nLite.

WFP/SFC is what runs at saving settings, read for more into in nlite-options-pathes page, you can disable it, no harm done and it won't hang. But still it has to be fixed.
videobruce
Is this a 2k issue or all O/Ss' issue??
nuhi
Reported so far on XP and 2k, so you could say all.
I can't wait to find out why this happens, weird that it doesn't happen to all users, myself included.
videobruce
It wasn't on a older version, at least my XP version worked. I think I was 1.2.
Anyway. SFC has to be off?
Can it be turned back on after the install?
nuhi
If you are in a hurry that would be one solution, but generally it shouldn't be a must.
Can't be turned on, actually you would need to replace another file, it's all non-user friendly, I would rather fix it.

What kind of installation did you choose ?
It´s missing in the LSinis... whistling.gif
And nlite is not removing it !
So your presets seem to be corrupted somehow.
Better start completely from scratch !
Fresh source and a reliable updatepack or list.

Tried several of those "stuck by T-9 presets" myself, as far as they were applicable to an AMD/ VIA chipset, non SATA.
Never got stuck, even though the hardware (see sig) is ancient and the external is even wierd (Amiga500 via 0Modem/ Mustek scanner @ parport,...)

P.S.:
Please remove the languages and keyboards in the LSinis, when you upload them, because it´s scrolling, scrolling and missing important entries, because the finger bleeds !
videobruce
Ok, I tried it again with SFC off and it completed the install.  I went to load a nForce2 UDP and the install hung for 45 seconds at the opening dialog box (whatever it said). I don't know what that was about, but it finally did install.

So you are saying once it is turned off, it's off and you can't easily restore it? Sounds as that isn't/shouldn't be a option.

Questions;
1. Is this AMD specific or is it with both AMD and Wintel based MBs'??
2. Has it been narrowed down any?
3. If I do a straight nLite procedure, NOT using ANY customizing option, other than slipstreaming a SP and burning the CD, does it still do it with a problem system??

Huh???  I have no idea what any of that is suppose to mean.

Disable SFC is actually a good thing for people who customize their Windows. You can enable it by editing reg entry but then it would complain too much, more frequent popups than what you get if kept enabled.

Trying now to provoke hang and checking differences with 1.3.5.
This is one of those weird bugs, but that's the only kind left.

Search in regedit for sfcdisable key, then delete it i guess, or google how to use it, it's widely known.

1. I think it doesn't matter, I had it once on 2k in virtual machine, only when removing NetDDE, no one else confirmed so I returned that component.
2. I'm only 2 hours on this matter, last night and today.
3. Read 2 smile.gif
4. Yes, always was: http://www.nliteos.com/download.html down under Previous (non-beta) versions

Sorry, I thought this was a know issue according to that other thread.
I'm going to try V1.3.5
BTW, I really love this program (other than the 'glitch'). I would like to thank you for all you have done and I wish I was able to do 1/10th as much.

As far as the system it is bveing installed in;

Epox 8RDA MB w/ nForce2 chipset (using on board audio),
AMD Throughbred B 2100,
2 256MB PC2700 DDR memory sticks,
Asus V3800 video card (TNT M64 chipset),
Two IDE drives,
Two optical drives,
Netgear NIC

(Not overclocked)
nuhi
I appreciate the compliment.

Hold on, first read this, I'll PM you the new test version.
http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?s=&...st&p=718064
videobruce
Over 1 MB smaller? Too bad you don't work for M$. thumbup.gif
nuhi
smile.gif it's because there is no languages in the test versions.
videobruce
Aren't the other languages on the install CD??

I tried to add DX9 under 'Hotfixes', but got a error message about a invaild command (something like that).
nuhi
Lets backup a little, what is 1MB smaller? I thought you're saying about the nLite package.

That DX9, was it an addon or installer from MS site, if it's installer then nLite doesn't support that. Try HFSlip, search msfn for it.

QUOTE

Yes, I was 1.5MB vs 2.5 MB.
QUOTE

It was a .exe from M$. I did search and find that HFSlip site, but it looked to complicated for just doing a simple step after the install.

Ok, other than than that error, I got a s***load of errors about missing files starting off with 'wbem' file names. There were way too many to write all of them down. I just quit the install. I will try again without DX9.
nuhi
That nLite installer is smaller because it doesn't include translated language files. Don't know how to explain that more clear, download public 1.4 selfextracting, extract them both and compare.

If by that DX9 integration you mean you used HFSlip then please delay that during bug testing. Also you gotta be careful to integrate before or after nLite. DX is integrated after nLite to be safe that some line isn't deleted while cleaning components, or if you use addon version then simply insert it into nLite.
videobruce
I just thought all those languages were in the Windows CD. Never bothered with any of that in the past.
I was just excited about having the ability to add DX9 and those recomemded M$ hotfixes to the install.
You are saying forget about all of that for the time being?

BTW, I'm using that SP5.1
Hope that is ok.
nuhi
Try 1.3.5 with that installation, and if it works better than 1.4 I sent you then report. With whatever you want but write it down how to mimic the situation if 1.4 breaks.

Questions;
1. On the 'Presets' screen, there are at least 2 Presets listed. One (or more) has a data and time listed and one is just listed as "Last Session" What is the difference?
2. If I don't import any previous session, when I go to the following screens that have options under 'Preset/Load", if I choose one of those sessions that were in that eariler screen, nothing changes on that screen that I checked before regarding options. I don't understand the difference between these two methods.
3. When I use a fresh copy of the Windows CD instead of using the previous nLite modified copy, none of the previous settings (that I changed) are changed in any of the following screens. It's as I never made any changes.

Sorry, if I don't understand this as it isn't clear to me and that complete guide sticky is a couple of years old.
nuhi
1. "Last session" is what it says it is, the one with the date is previous one so that you have a backup of it, better than overwriting.

2. Presets - Load that page should work, but edit with notepad that file (in nlite\presets folder) and see if it actually has anything in it regarding to that page. If it's hotfixes or drivers and they are not in the place where the preset first saved them then they won't be readded.
Presets - Load is for that page only, if you want to load all pages then double-click on the Presets page.

3. Make sure that the Load last session on Startup option on Presets page is selected and that you actually have last session on the list. If you don't then import it.

Last 11 posts are not related to the bug, can we get back on the track.

If I am making a mistake in the procedure or don't fully understand it, testing isn't going to do either of us any good, correct?

There are two or more "Last Sessions"listed (see attachment), one doesn't have a date in the left collumn, the others do. Whats' what?

Anyway, V1.3.5 did work. That modified V1.4 didn't, but I was going to try it again.
nuhi
Didn't I already answer that, read #1 in my last post.

Btw I think that the fact of you using SP 5.1 is crucial for this, can you explain in short how can I do the same?
videobruce
Correction:
No idea why, but when I reinstalled that version that worked before (because of another un-related issue), it didn't work if you can believe that. blink.gif

No it wasn't answered regarding the one session that didn't have the time/date next to the label 'Last Session'.

That SP5.1 is here;
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enh...icial-SP5.shtml

It works just as a M$ SP does.
nuhi
I'll try that SP and report.

So "Last Session" without the date is the latest used, those with the date are backups from previous sessions.

edit: Yeah that SP did it. Cause is in the sfcfiles.dl_, fixing.

QUOTE

I sort of thought that. "Last Session" is the 'last' session, where the others are previous sessions. Might want to think about changeing that. newwink.gif

I talked with a friend at work who I told about nLite. He likes Vista (no idea why) and at the time I didn't know there was a 'vLite' version for Vista. He told me nLite hangs at 9 minutes durning the Saving settings also. He also told me he believes there is a driver that loads twice and that is why the process is 'hanging'. He is more advanced that I am, so I have to believe him.

Sorry, I didn't post which SP I was using.
nuhi
It's ok.

This bug is located and fixed thanks to your SP tip, just waiting for confirmations. But you know that already smile.gif

edit: Version with the fix released, v1.4.1.
videobruce
Using 1.4 test 2 on another box (nForce 570 chipset MB), the install went ok. It did not 'hang'.
I will try again with different options and with XP (on the other bootable internal HDD).
nuhi
1.4.1 is up. It's ok we can consider this fixed, cary on with your normal usage smile.gif
