1) After slipstream WinXP + SP3 (RTM 5512 Czech version) and couple tweks (no remove or stop services) windows after install do not have working Windows Installer (can't install Net Framewrok, MS Ofiice etc.). I must stop and start Windows Installer again with ...
CODE
1.    Unregister Windows Installer. To do this, click Start, click Run, type msiexec /unregister in the Open box, and then click OK.
2.    Reregister Windows Installer. To do this, click click Start, click Run, type msiexec /regserver in the Open box, and then click OK.

2) I can't find Indexing Service in nLite Tweak Tab.

I was just about to ask if SP3 causes nLite any trouble ... guess I was right tongue.gif Let's wait for some fixes smile.gif
Question though - wouldn't be better to use version 1.4.1 instead? Probably bad thought.

I tried to nlite IE7 to Windows XP SP3.

I get repeated restarts when installing.

Also I have noticed that txtsetup .sif seems smaller after running nlite. Dunno if that has any significance.

EDIT: Does uxtheme and other .dll patching works for SP3 based XP as well?

Glad to here about patching.

By nlite preset you mean the log file?

Everything integrates ok, but after i make .iso and install, during install restart loop occurs (after 1st restart)
Hoewer I was using older version of nlite. Have downloaded latest ver. and will try again

Hi Nuhi!

I'm using Windows XP SP3 with nLite 1.4.5 beta 2 and it doesn't slipstreams cumulative hotfix KB947864 for IE7 and XMLite (KB915865) which is part of SP3 in default.

Hi Guys,

I've got also the problem with the ie7 hotfix kb947864.
I slipstreamed XP-SP3 with IE7 and WMP11.
It works fine, but I always get notified about the update kb947864 and its installation fails.
When I downloaded manually and ran setup, I got the message that the patch isn't compatible with my system.
I think the problem is, that this update is already included in sp3, so patch is not made for XP-SP3 and fails to install.
The IE7 I seems to be not patched with sp3, because it is slipstreamed, but I cannot install the patch because of the OS-Version Check of the Update.

Including the patch to the nlite-cd could solve the problem, but I don't have the facilities to test this idea. sad.gif

"Windows XP SP3 does not include Windows Internet Explorer 7,

It is a good read and contains the answers to pretty much everything one requires. I use OnePiece's "OnePiece_IE7AddOn_2.1.1_ENU" with no errors.

Final version is released, had to rush the SP3 Slipstream under Vista fix, too many reports of the same.

Going to read your reports these days, thank you.

Hey nuhi, do you plan on any more removals in future versions of nLite?

Just curious whistling.gif

what would you suggest?

can you just clear up one thing for me nuhi, was the slipstreaming in vista an nlite only issue? ie, if i slipstreamed manually in vista (xp sp3 into xp gold) it should be fine yes?

Hi RickSteele,

like I rode, I slipstreamed SP3, IE7 and WMP11 into my XP-SP2.
And, yes SP3 contains the update, but when I slipstream the IE7 into my XP-CD with SP3, it does not apply this update to my IE7.
I tried to evade the OS-Check of the KB947864 to get installed into my not updated IE7 under XP-SP3, but then the integrity-check fails. I think I have to wait, until the next cumulative IE7 update comes up ;-)

I can just recommend everybody to include the KB947864 into your nlite-XP-SP3-CD, if you also include IE7, to have a workaround for this problem.

I cannot use the OnePiece thing, because I need my IE7 and the updates in german.

Thanks for your help

Big Thanks @ nuhi! thumbup.gif

Only one question:
The build nr from the 1.4.5Final is 1.4.5.3 the previously 1.4.5 Beta2 was 1.4.5.1.
Are the fixing of the Vista issue the only Change?

Great to see a new release - time to do a reformat with SP3!

How about some of the disabled/non-started services in this shot?

I understand that vLite will probably become the focus of your application development, however I would still like to see further development and component removal in nLite.

Hello,

I use nLite 1.4.5 final.

I have a French version of Windows XP Pro SP0 and I have slipstreamed the SP3, included IE7 and no others changes.

All seem work except the "Explorateur d'ordinateur" (Computer explorer) service that stop immediately after starting with this error message:

This service is necessary to access to folder sharing by using the name of the computer instead of theirs IP's.

Translated in English:

The Computer Explorer service of local computer with started then stopped. Certain services can stop automatically if they do not have any task to carry out, for example, the alarms service and the performances newspapers.
nuhi
danker, I believe so. And some typos. Why did I jump to 3...it was something like "hm beta 2 is .1, I must have forgotten to put .2 after beta 1, lets put .3 now like third installment of 1.4.5"

jmbattle, long time no read.

Network Connection - Do you want network support to be removed or it is like your LAN is set by DHCP and you don't need any access to the config?
Shell HW - part of Shell Services, already removable, cant be separated from other 2 in the same component.
Telephony - I remember removal of this broke down a lot of network dlls so it can go under the same as NetConn
App management - aka Add/Remove programs. It is needed, for most
Crypto - who knows, you never know smile.gif
HID - usb, mouse, keyboard thingies
Spooler - Printer Support
Sec Acc Mng - Don't know
Installer - needed, for most

So only possibility would be Network Support and see what is Crypto and Secc Acc Mng. Not much fun, could be that all 3 are needed.

SuperPat, that is normal, that popup explains it. But if you can't browse other shares in the network then maybe you removed Windows Firewall.
Outbreaker
HI smile.gif

If i select in nLite to remove "Messenger" "Movie Maker" "Windows Games" & "NetMeeting" then the empty folders don't get removed form "C:\Program Files". Can this problem be fixed ore is this a Windows File Protection problem because if i remove them manual Windows File Protection is replacing them again.
nuhi
Outbreaker, yup that is the SFC "problem". So far it is unknown to me how to filter that out. If you disable SFC it will be cleaned of course.
SuperPat
In fact I have seen, in the Microsoft web site, that we can install (and slipstream) the SP3 only on a XP SP1a or a XP SP2, Not on SP0, SP1.

nLite should show an error in this case

With sfc on I get complaints from Windows sfc that essential files have been replaced. Should I change the option to sfc off?

Security Center cannot start, I think because Windows Management Instrumentation service is missing.

In Tweaks:
Explorer-Remove arrows shortcuts does not work
Speed-Classic Windows maps does not work

I have Windows XP SP3 Dutch with the latest Nlite.

Network Connection - Do you want network support to be removed or it is like your LAN is set by DHCP and you don't need any access to the config?

Well, this system is not connected to a network, hence why I disable the service. All I require is the bare minimum to get online using my cable modem and DHCP (addition components such as file/print sharing etc. are not even installed), thus I am wondering if this service can also be removed?
QUOTE
Shell HW - part of Shell Services, already removable, cant be separated from other 2 in the same component.

Ah, I see, and therefore required for Themes support, yes?
QUOTE
Telephony - I remember removal of this broke down a lot of network dlls so it can go under the same as NetConn

Again, I have disabled this service and am still able to get online, so perhaps it is unnecessary for this system?
QUOTE
App management - aka Add/Remove programs. It is needed, for most

I have disabled this service, yet am still able to open the Add/Remove Programs control panel applet, so perhaps it is not required after all?
Even if the service is required for the applet to run, could the user not use a freeware/shareware alternative?
QUOTE
Crypto - who knows, you never know smile.gif

Yes, I disabled this service and restarted. Everything is fine at bootup, however opening the Hardware Devices list and double clicking on a component sets the service back to Manual and starts it automatically. Disabling and stopping the service, then attempting to double click a hardware component for a second time will still displays the information, yet does not change the service settings. Who knows - perhaps it can be removed too? newwink.gif
QUOTE
HID - usb, mouse, keyboard thingies

Again, disabled here, the service does not appear to have been started, yet my USB mouse is working fine. Unnecessary?
QUOTE
Spooler - Printer Support

Okay, I shall keep it for PDF output.
QUOTE
Sec Acc Mng - Don't know

Okay, well let's try getting rid of it, then seeing what happens. newwink.gif
QUOTE
Installer - needed, for most

Agreed. Third party installer engines such as NSIS appear to be unaffected, however InstallShield and .MSI stuff requires this service.
QUOTE
So only possibility would be Network Support and see what is Crypto and Secc Acc Mng. Not much fun, could be that all 3 are needed.

Well, if you do not have any further components planned for removal in 1.4.6, please consider adding these as 'experimentals' newwink.gif

Keep up the great work!

JM, why not disable the services vi an nlite customization to see what happens.
jmbattle
newsposter, actually, with the exception of 'Windows Installer' I have disabled all of the remaining unused services whilst maintaining the required functionality.

After a little research, it would appear that the Human Interface Device Access service is only necessary in order to control additional buttons found on multimedia keyboards and other peripherals such as printers/scanners. The Application Management service, on the other hand, seems to be related to deploying software across a network.

I wonder if perhaps simply disabling a service is different to removing it from the system entirely, due to possible file dependencies?

Cheers,
James

newsposter
Yes, disabling a service leaves all the files on your system. Unless you are SURE (100%!) that you will NEVER need a specific service, disable it, DON'T delete it.

The hassles of trying to manuall reinstall a previously deleted service are considerable.

Hi
I have problem!
I take windows xp pro sp2, I build SP3, IE7, WMP11,
I remove not the components, necessary for me, (without them, built - in IE6, worked), all passes well, but after installation, IE7 does not work: blinks a window and it is more than anything.
Prompt, what's the matter?
Thanks for the answer!

If you have problems, always try using the latest (stable) version - nLite 1.4.5 FINAL.

Give more details about how you slipstreamed, in what order you did it and other tasks. I can't figure out what you meant - you removed components or kept all of them?

You are correct. Forgot to upload the new download page after silently updating the release today.

fix: SP3 issues if you just add an addon without any other component removal, options or tweaks, just addons. That would skip the automatic SP3 adjustments.
You can recognize the new release by the exe version after being installed, it should be 1.4.5.3.

Let me know if something breaks.
zabardast_1
It still shows version 1.4.5 and not 1.4.5.3,I have downloaded the latest version ?
Keelhaul
What exactly was the problem with slipstreaming SP3 in Vista? I added SP3 into XP (English and German versions) using 1.4.5 beta 2 in Vista x64. Both seem to at least boot properly. Will I run into problems using those CDs later?
nuhi
zabardast_1, both have 1.4.5 when you run it but the exe file version is .3

Keelhaul, only problem was that the CDKey from SP2 would not be accepted. If yours works fine you'll be ok.
Keelhaul
Hmm I haven't gotten to the point where you have to enter the key yet, maybe I should try it out...

Is it ok to re-slip the same folder with the same SP3 using the latest nLite (the one that was already slipstreamed using beta 2)?
Outbreaker
HI smile.gif

I found a little buggy.
If i select in nLite to remove Security Center.
But after the Windows installation the Security Center ICON is still showing in "Control Panel" -> "Category View" in Classic View it is removed.
nuhi
Keelhaul, if it allows you to do it. Not recommended.

Outbreaker, I think that is hard-coded in XP. In Vista it is a reg entry.
Kirby
there is a new service(s), which was just introduced in SP3, that should not be removed if you use a Wireless LAN card. When I removed this service(s), the Wireless Network Connection window would not show anything, even when the router was a few feet away. Also, Windows did not correctly detect when there was a connection to the router or not. However, you could manually connect to the router via the SSID name.

The services I am looking at:

Health Key and Certificate Management Service
Network Access Protection
Wired AutoConfig

I'm pretty sure it's the NAP service that is causing all the problems when removed, however, I'll need to create one more image to see if I can reproduce the problem....unless if someone's expertise or experience can confirm my suspision welcome.gif
Camarade_Tux
Hi nuhi,

My brother recently killed the .net framework, just when I was going back to windows modding. No .net app works anymore.
I haven't found the alternative runtimes on you website. Where can I have them (I think I read they were not exchangeable) ?
Thanks. smile.gif
nuhi
Kirby, it could be the other two, not the NAP.
Please let me know if you find out for sure and I'll put it into the compat. But actually both of these should be in the Ethernet compat.

Camarade_Tux, don't have a link but this is good for fixing .NET
http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?s=&...st&p=744080
Camarade_Tux
I finally fixed it the way I always did. I just needed to get used to windows again. tongue.gif

Basically the installation was completely damaged. No installer would run, uninstallation was impossible and only uninstall/repair was offered to me while a direct force reinstallation would probably have done the trick.
So after a few moments trying to go with microsoft's installers, I opened regmon, found the installers were reading HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products. I then went there with regedit and deleted all occurences of .net framework. I could at last reinstall the .net framework and two minutes later nlite was running.

When in doubt, use brute force.

(but nlite will wait for tomorrow now newwink.gif )
