BDA (TV Tuner) support for Server 2008 x86 and x64

3 STEPS ONLY TO GET BDA ON SERVER (TV TUNER FUNCTION)
I compiled a setup file, that will add BDA (TV Tuner) function on Server 2008 x86 and x64, without any hassles.
I tested it on a clean installation several times, no issues at all

Changelog:

QUOTE
07/09/08
-No more devices found error
-Minor bda.inf tweaks
-No need to reboot after installing now
22/06/08
-Fixed a MAJOR bug which prevented the installer from not installing BDA on server
-Updated BDA Installer files with latest DirectX 9 Redist June
03/06/08
-Fixed x64 Directory source file copy error (BDA was not working on x64 systems due to source files not being copied to the right directory)
-Now installer uses x64 version of "regsvr32.exe" to register x64 source files, and x86 version of "regsvr32.exe" to register x86 source files
29/05/08
-Added x64 support
-Made corrections to x86 installer
-Added more filters that were missing from previous installer pack
-Fixed "kxsbar.ax, kstvtune.ax invalid errors

Tested on 7 different x86 and x64 machines, all with different TV Cards, all worked fine

Then on server same again, manually copy the "mui" files to system32 and syswow64 as well only

problem is there is no DVB-T Network Provider installed.

You can manually register msdvbnp.ax from a Vista machine but the property tab will be grey'd out (I think the reg key has moved)

hi
my technotrend tv tuner works like a charm on vista ultimate x86, even though it says on installation of the driver (Not digitally signed by ms), but when i install it on windows server 2008 trial version, it installs the driver, but no tv application work with the tv tuner, it gives error like 'cannot initialize' any solution on how to make it work on server 2008 please. by the way any tv tuner you know that will for sure work on server 2008?
thank you

thanks for your help, i did copy (to sysytem32 under server) and register msdvbnp.ax "regsvr32 /s msdvbnp.ax" from a Vista machine, but still no luck. i installed the latest web release directx 9c, but my dvbviewer tv app cannot find my device although it appears on system device list with no conflict sad.gif

has anybody worked around a way to get the bda support on server yet?

I have an Leadtek DTV2000 H, and have too this problem. I'm trying everything i can, about 10 programs to watch and record TV, but with no success.
I found only information that this not working TV tuner has something to do with windwos(directx) BDA.
Only program which works is DScaler, it shows TV channel picture and also sound, but recording does not record sound, and the quality of video was terrible, even when i set quality XviD/MPG-4 video settings.

Now i'm waiting for some fix, from Leadtek or Microsoft.

I think it may have something to do with directx 10, i will do some research with this, and give here info when have done researching of this problem.

its not directx 10, its almost impossible to get tv cards working on server 08. they do not support BDA function on server
check this link,

btw if you do get tv card working then please share your resource and how you got it working

Yes i read this, but i read somewhere it can be something to do with directx, but now from your link no directx issue is behind that. Then we must wait M$ to add BDA support for server 2008 wacko.gif

I wrote to Leadtek support, but their answer was:
QUOTE
We are sorry for we are not promise it can work with server 2008 platform.
Because any released driver or application software of our download site no test with it.
So we are no suggest you set it work with there.

This is not what im excepting from Leadtek as customer :-(
shahed26
to be honest, server is not designed for use as a workstation. its just a bonus for us to have some vista goodiness eg, vista looks etc..
No company design their workstation device (components) drivers for server. as i mentioned its just a bonus for us to have almost all workstation components devices driver work on server except BDA
theres many people out there trying to get BDA working. hopefully someday soon we will have BDA or never
terrorix
You're right. But it would be nice if BDA will be supported in server 2008.
shahed26
BDA Support is possible now on server 2008. i know someone who got it working fully... will post more info soon

Good news, it worked for me. The only thing that I had to do was extract bdasup.sys from BDAXP.cab and place it into C:\Windows\System32\en-US. The Compro TV viewer does not work, but that's not a problem because I use Webscheduler to record my shows and I convert and watch them later.
Thanks for posting this solution. biggrin.gif

The "bdasup.sys" file is already on server 2008 located on C:\Windows\System32\drivers. The "BDAXP.CAB" Has the old version of it which will cause problems (maybe). my advice is replace the old bdasup.sys FILE you copied from "BDAXP.CAB" with the original server one

ok, this is the same problem i had as well. Just run the file bda.inf from "BDAXP.cab" (from latest direcx download)again, and restart (right click on bda.inf and then choose install). if its promting you to install pnp devices that it finds, then just click cancel for all of them if it still does not work, then run bda.inf again, and this time when it finds the pnp devices, just locate and install. when its prompting pnp install make sure you browse to the files extracted from "bdaxp.cab"

Also the guide is sort of confusing, double check everything, and repeat all actions from my guide again if its still not working.

Make sure you have the latest "DIRECTX" installed. also a decent codec pack
run this file from DXSETUP.exe from the latest DX9 Redist download
if it still does not work then do this:

thats were it went all wrong. i updated my guide, read it properly again. the errors wont be there anymore. you need to extract ALL THE FILES from bdaxp.cab and run bda.inf from there. read my guide again coz its updated and you wont get no errors.
btw it should work on x64 as well. (did not try it on x64 yet)

Hello shahed26,

I have the same error than terrorix with kstvtune.ax and ksxbar.ax by using your manual method. I'm using Win2k8 datacenter X86 on a Dell Latitude C510/C610. What do you advice to me ? Your recently modified automatic method ?

An idea please. My hardware TV tuner : PCTV DVB-T stick solo and PCTV Dual DVB-t Diversity Stick.

Other question : a pack codec like K-Lite codec is really necessary or optional ?

Thanks for your patience.

try my new recently modified installers. the errors that you and terrorix had with kstvtune.ax and ksxbar.ax are fixed. these errors were caused by a few "mui" files missing that must be present in the source folder.
just try the new installer and it should work this time.
btw make sure your read the instructions before installing found inside the "bdaforserver"

edit: codec pack is optional. but remember server has no mpeg2 codecs or anything, so viewing live tv picture will require you to install one later. anyways thats a optional so its fine without a codec pack
valorisa
Again thanks shahed26. I try this as soon as possible and I will let you know the result.

Hi, after doing a clean install of server 2008 ent x64, i realized that "kstvtune.ax and ksxbar.ax" are not required to register, and it cant be registered as well. The whole point is that them 2 ax files needs to be present in syswow64 and system32 directory, so when you launch any tv applications it uses these 2 files for its purpose. They cant be registered even on vista, i tried registering, but it will not register as the whole point is your tv application to access these 2 files only for your tv app to work.
Just run the "BDA.inf" from bda folder the directX 9 version, and restart to see if your tv card works, if it don't then the only solution i would recommend is do a clean install and run my setup pack.
Hope this helps

Hi!
Just a little tweack for your bat files If you want them to run no matter the location of bdaforserver folder !
-> So NO NEED FOR
QUOTE
and it will extract as "bdaforserver" to your windows
installation drive, thats were the setup MUST be runned from, otherwise it wont work
IMPORTANT:IN ORDER FOR EVERYTHING TO WORK, RUN THE SETUP FROM WERE YOUR WINDOWS
IS INSTALLED (C:) OTHERWISE IT WONT WORK (THATS WERE IT EXTRACTED)

add
QUOTE
cd /d %0\..
after
QUOTE
@echo off
and replace
QUOTE
%systemdrive%\bdaforserver\
with
QUOTE
"../
(also add quotes " at the end of the line)

For example
QUOTE
@echo off

cd /d %0\..
