Had to get XP to run again because of startup errors.

So
1.Put in the CD and overwrote XP over itself.

2. Noticed that usernames got duplicated. For example. Username was Peter and now Peter is still there but there is now Peter.PC

3. Dragged all of Peter's documents down to Peter.PC so he could see them and use them.

4. He put his Quickbooks back on his computer and HP Printing software.

Now can't get Quickbooks to open & the printing software won't finish to install.

Is this because Quickbooks is already on the pc and the printing software?

Should I
1. Uninstall Quickbooks out of the Peter.PC profile and the HP printer?

And then
2. Go to Peter's profile and drag the Quickbooks Icon down to Peter.PC profile?

The printer: maybe take it manually out of Peter thru Windows Explorer and then reinstall it into the new profile Peter.pc??

So if I do drag the orginal Quickbook icon down to Peter.pc/Start Menu/Programs?

It is currently in Hard drive/Doc & Settings/All Users/Start Menu/Programs

Been through this, and can give a vague recollection of "how to"...

1 - create a folder "SAVEPROFS"
2 - MOVE (NOT "copy") the User Profile folder to the saveprofs folder
3 - create the profile (again)
4 - COPY the saved (eg MOVE'd) User Profile from "saveprofs" to re-created

This is a kind of simplistic explanation. The problem lies in the fact that the original profile folder already exists when you re-define the User Profile, hence the "duplicate". The idea behind MOVE'ing the original is to save it in case of flub-a-dubs and to allow the newly re-created one to get the correct/original foldername. I can't quite remember, but I think that the re-created one has to sign on once to re-create the correct folder name prior to COPY'ing the saved info.

That will not work unless he set up a third admin account. Setup 3d admin account, and sort out both Peter and Peter."computername" folders then.
When sorting out files, delete both, or stick with the mess. reset computer, and relogin as 3d account, and then make new admin account Peter.
If still xp makes Peter."unwantedextraletters" you need to enter registry and manually delete it. Sometimes windows wfp could hop in the ring.
