hi man, i have had a looksie at your uxtheme, and man...
see what version it returned: 6.00.2600.0000 (xpclient.010817-1148)
i believe that is a sp0 version man.
so that would explain why it didnt work, but how the hell did you end up with a sp0 file after upgrade with sp3???
any idae what went wrong on your system?

That's very weird, I'm not sure. Especially since I upgraded from SP2. I originally installed on here with an SP2 disk so SP0 has never been on this PC. The upgrade went OK as far as I know, nothing else seems to be broken. Guess windows update must have messed something up :/. It might have something to do with the fact that I tried to install the SP2 UXTheme patcher after the upgrade (I wasn't thinking, I was so used to running it on PCs with SP2), but I restored it once I realized it was only for SP2. Unless that somehow restored the wrong version of the file or something.

well, just install sp3 again, and then first check the fileversion of the uxtheme.
it should be 5512.
then if thats ok, use the patcher, and let me know man

After trying to "restore" the SP2 patcher (thinking maybe if I restored the one I did first it would be back to an unaltered state) I got a ton of "bad image" messages and couldn't boot properly. So I used an Ubuntu live CD to boot up and replace uxtheme.dll manually with a patched one from www.withinwindows.com. Now my themes work perfectly. Probably was something I did wrong

Thanks for your help

can i modify my UXTheme.dll with your patch (i have sp2)and then restart....?
after that, copy my UXTheme.dll, make a cab (makecab command) to rename it to UXTheme.dl_ ..... and then copy it into my i386 folder windows setup?
my windows ue setup has SP2...i want be able to use any theme with sp2...and then..if the user install sp3..he can use the themes too (with sp3)
sorry for my bad english
can you understand me?
EDIT: jaja sorry...i searched on my hard disk and i dont have any UXTheme.dll :s
more clearly:
how can i add the patched UXTheme.dll (with support for sp3) to my windows ue SP2 setup?
my windows ue setup (is not mine...) has a UXTheme.dl_ on i386 folder

First off all, stop that pm bombardement man, thats not cool and very f***ed up

not to mention that i wont help you that way man...
and about sp2 versions, if you read the topic, which you clearly didnt, you would see this is tested on sp3 only.
that wont mean it wont work, but its not officialy for now.
sorry if i sound a bit harsh, but i really dont like it if i get bombarded by pm's, just wait till i give a answer man.

Hi dudes, marxo from
WPC, and myself, have created a UXtheme patcher for the new sp3 version.
this little app can easily patch your file, so you can use unsigned visual styles.
Here is a download link:
SP3 UX theme patcher 1.1
Have fun.
new version uploaded.
better detection of patched or unpatched file.
more safety checks
and a "lost hope" hotkey to restore the original file.
I tested it with success on a russian uxtheme file, and all wend well, so i think its language
undependend, but i wont make that claim for sure

for now...

QUOTE (damian666 @ Apr 28 2008, 07:44 AM)

yes, only for sp3, in a few days we will all upgrade so,...
why supply sp2 support? and its also allready there so...
and i hope it works on all language versions, but untill its tested, i cant say for sure...
so let em know dudes.
Damian666
You might want to read the thread. He did state that, it's not his fault it's not all right there in the first post. One could logically surmise that since this is for SP3 as stated, that SP2, SP1. are not included. Research is always good, including reading a small 3 page thread.

yeah, i know, its really weird man.
we are investigating it now.

ok, maybe i was a bit to overconfident...
i checked it on my testbox, and it worked there, but when i tested it on my english testbox, it didnt...
so what the hell is going on here? i dont know.
you dont have a problem if your on a normal account, but on a restricted one, it errors up your explorer!!!
so, maybe not fixed then... but if its the problem of the patch itselfor some settings in Windows...
i really dont know, i checked a few pre patched uxthemes, and they all have the same patched code :S
i will report back...

oke news flash...
the hexdata is correct, so i am not being overconfident...

BUT the automated process makes it work only on a admin account, why?
i really dont know, if i compare the auto patched and hand patched file, they are identical.
so it beats me...
still searching though.

Thanks Damian and marxo! After installing SP3 my desktop looked kinda... dull. But not anymore! Using Finnish XP, btw.
Hope you manage to find a fix for the limited user account problem. As a workaround I suppose I'll just have to promote the lua to admin account.

This works fine for my admin account but my limited user account crashes explorer and spits out and error message - 0xc0000022. If I make the account admin it then works fine but revert it back and it crashes again.
It's a permissions issue, apparently the patcher messes them up for the dll. Make sure that the Users and Power Users groups have the Read and Execute permission set.
Upd. not the dll itself, but the temporary .dll.new it creates.

Make sure you set the right permissions on the file you create? I don't know the details, I don't do native Windows programming.
The least you can do is leave more instructions for users, of course

Hey Damian,
I can only download the "Character Creator Studio". This isn't really an UXtheme-Patch. Do have the wrong link or do I make another mistake?
So far, it seems I cannot use custom themes with XP SP 3...

Can you please elaborate. I'm really new with this stuff. I thought to launch things like this that you needed to put them in the $OEM$ folder, then launch it with the cmdlines.txt and the [GuiRunOnce].

well, thats also possible man, if you like that approach...
then just let it execute with teh /s switch on the runonce.
that should work, but it needs a reboot, just tat you know.

ATTENTION!
Yesterday I tried this program on a hungarian XP Home.
Patch button is not shaded, but after patch, a lot of programs stopped working saying an memory error:
Task Manager, Process Explorer, BootVis, CCleaner, etc. (BootVis is only stopped at starting trace or system optimization, etc.)
So I needed to restore my uxtheme.dll file.
If anyone have hungarian XP, don't try to patch uxtheme.dll with this program!

p.s.: I see
OS: none, but I setted my OS to XP Home!

There is no hungarian release, and if you are using LIP it can be really buggy.
I can guarantee that it's language independent, because uxtheme.dll is same in all sp3 versions.

I have SP3. Vista Transformation Pack's newer versions (from 7.0) greatly patches uxtheme.dll in my hungarian XP. I don't know how VTP's uxtheme patch works in SP3... a tip: it not works. I have patched uxtheme.dll using XP SP2 multiple times with success. Only the Multi-Patcher failed. In the hungarian Vista uxtheme patch is so easier, because system files' resources is english and there is MUI files... BTW, I have patched uxtheme.dll on another computer with hungarian XP SP2, and after SP3 install, no uxtheme patch needed, themes working. I now use Styler for applying visual styles. Have a good day!

p.s.: Original uxtheme.dll or patched uxtheme.dll by UxTender needed?

Hello, I need help fixing my computer. I'm sorry, but I am not very proficient in Windows; about all I know is how to access Safe Mode to make any changes. I ask that anyone who can help be very clear on their instructions on how to fix my computer problem. Thank you.
I have a very serious problem that occurred after I patched my fresh SP3 installation with Uxtender 1.2. What happened was, when I rebooted my computer after the patch, my computer showed an error about winlogon.exe, and I can't seem to access anything. There is no GUI at all, no shell or theme, only my mouse. I see a window error that says this:
SAS window: winlogon.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x5ad8a69d" referenced memory at "0x08ea1916". The memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program.
Click on CANCEL to debug the program. After I exit out of the error window with either choice, I'm left with nothing but my mouse and a black screen. Then it reboots itself after some minutes later. Very weird. I cannot be sure what I should be doing right now. Before my computer screwed up, my computer logs on to the admin user automatically every time, so I don't have to encounter the user logon screen each startup. I saw in one of these posts that one of the users had a problem with logging on to a non-admin account, and he was able to fix it through changing the settings of the Users and Power Users section. I don't know if that will apply here, since I log on as admin. Heck I'm not too sure if I'm logging on at all. My first hunch would be that.
My second idea would be to replace the uxtheme.dll with a new one, hopefully restoring my themes and allowing me to use my computer normally. Would that be a feasible idea, and would I need to block any backups, as done here?
http://themes.belchfire.net/index.php?showtopic=9001 I need to do this through Safe Mode, so I hope this will work. I've tried using "Last Known Good Configuration", but it did not seem to do anything. I got the same message.
Thank you for taking your time to read this post, it is really long, I know. I hope you can find the answer to my problem. : ]
Thanks again,
joseph
