This is a nice if short description of Longhorn (Windows 2006)? Anyway, we get to see a little bit of what to expect.

In addition to the interface revisions, including the new Sidebar, that we saw in our first glimpse of Longhorn, Microsoft has altered Windows Explorer, the program that controls the desktop and its computer- and file-browsing windows.

In our preview code (the official beta isn't due until the second half of 2004, and rumor has it that the upgrade may not ship until 2006), Windows Explorer routinely displayed much more information about files and computer resources than it does in Windows XP. New links in Explorer panels let users and/or applications associate search keywords, comments, and categories with files, data within files, or objects stored on other devices, computers, or networks. This is the first evidence of Longhorn's new WinFS file system, which lets you find related resources regardless of their physical location or object type.

im betting on longhorn to be like any other windows os release. full of holes. limited software support (for at least 6months to a year) and completely different than the previous version.

hopefully ms won't decide to throw something out there to keep us satisfied for a while like was done with ME.

Bulls***. Longhorn is going to kick a** IMO. Don't start condemning releases 3 years before they're out.
Datalore
Datalore, don't start hyping releases 3 years prior either newwink.gif Time will tell. The alpha releases show very little of the finished product.

I think that Longhorn will kick some a****, but if the Palladium thing is implemented, I will think a lot before siwtching to it, because this Palladium technology won't allow full control over my computer.

I wouldn't say it'll be full of holes. But there will be some found in the new OS. It's not like there's one particular OS on any format that's 100% perfect. Even linux has had some kind of problem with security which has been patched up.

I'm looking forward to the new OS, but I won't be looking forward to it hogging up all the system's resources though. unsure.gif

By then 1 gig of ram will probably be standard, along with 200 gigs of hard drive space. Pentium 5's will be out too. I wouldn't worry too much about hogging resources.

Way back in the DOS-days, I wrote a simple little program for my boss that produced VAT-tickets. The programming itself was finished in less than half an hour, but I spent the next month making the thing 'as*****'-proof. woot.gif I had to plug all the unexpected events, like people pressing the wrong buttons, printer-timeouts etc.

My point: When LH goes RTM, there is no doubt that people will find holes within a matter of days. The guys at M$ simply cannot forsee ALL the possible events. And no doubt there will be people exploiting the discoverd holes, and try to hijack your system, or crashing the thing.....
eXPerience-XP
Linux has alot more holes then M$ Operating System's is just that its not as commonly used as Windows is dats y their havent been many holes found

I've got a good feeling MS will pull up their socks for Longhorn regarding security. Look at what we've got now, its a lot worse, and the DOD are on MS's backs for their security flaws.

There's also Linux to take into account. A lot of corporations this year have switched over, and MS don't like this at all.

MS are going to put their best ever efforts into their next OS.
XtremeMaC
I think this year was a major fallback for big companies
Nvidia & Microsoft, they both couldn't really manage to get what they wanted to get. (in different ways)

but I agree longhorn gonna kick some azz.
but they should decrease the size of the huge toolbar on the explorer windows! annoying. even @ 1600*1200
Gism0
maybe they are hoping everyone will have projectors by 2006 and we'll just use the sides of our houses for screens? biggrin.gif
Visentinel
It doesn't matter how good LH is.
I wont be switching until i watch everyone else do it and see what happens to them smile.gif

It's more than a feeling... newwink.gif
Chief Bill said so himself. He called it 'trustworthy computing".
Since LH probably will be used by professional users (companies etc), M$ just HAVE to make sure that it's stable and secure.
Nowadays one security hole follows another, and I think uncle Bill has had enough. If you run XP, you get security-plugs once every 2 weeks or so. I think Bill aims at 1 update every half year.... newwink.gif
