My vlited vista ultimate won't install the latest vista update (KB952709) released by microsoft. I don't know what causes it. Any clue on what vista component it needs present in order for it to be installed?

KB952709 is described as:

Oops sorry 'bout that. The error is rather odd since it would initially install, then goes through that "Configuring updates, don't turn off pc yada yada" then reboots, black screen with command like messages. Not exactly errors but rather sort of copying files or something to some folders. Then it reboots again, now with a message like "unable to apply updates, reverting changes etc.), then reboots again. It will then reboots normally. But that KB update will show again in the important updates. If you update it, it will just repeat the same process.

I read the KB detail and it says something about POP3 email update. I removed the windows mail components in my vista. Could it be the caused of the error or there is something else?

Other than that, all the rest of the updates were installed successfully.

Windows Mail, QoS are the cause. they may have other components btw

you can take a look at the "C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log" to see the error message.

Yeah this "hotfix" is actually a collection of hotfixes, it updates a bunch of components, meaning it is best to consider it as micro service pack, integrate and reinstall.

Just that KB or all the recent hotfixes? For now, I just hid that particular hotfix since most of the the things it fixes are the ones that I removed and don't need in my UMPC. I just like to know if there is anything there that I really need that is worth reinstalling my vista. Thanks.

I was able to install it on top of a vLited Vista Version and I have no problems.

I have the same problem (x64 version though); I'm also fairly certain it's because of Windows Mail.

Just these "Performance and Compatibility" hotfix packs. Unless you are lucky to have kept all the needed components like MagicAndre1981 did.

any workaround for this? i have the same prob. Reinstalling is not happening, it boggles my mind how some folks take reinstalls so lightly.

I think I got what causes it not to install. It's not the Windows Mail, but rather the Quality of Service (QoS) and the Quality Windows Audio Video Experience components. I retained them and the KB got installed.

Curiously for me, I must keep ReadyBoost and Windows Time for the update to install. I don't delete any QOS related service, but I do delete the Mail program.

it is not big deal with this update. Just try it, if everything went fine that's good for you. if not, integrate it for your next install. this link can show you the number of file updated, for more information just google some of them and you'll see have a lite idea on which components it depends

I do not want to create a new topic, but I also have some issue with integration of hotfixes:

Windows6.0-KB955020-x64.cab (64MB) gives an error during integration.

msxml4-KB941833-enu.exe - can not be integrated?
Windows-kb890830-v2.0.exe - can not be integrated?
Windows6.0-KB905866-v22-x64.cab - can be integrated, but when Windows Mail is removed new versions appear in WU, but do not install(as for all other versions)

Windows6.0-KB952709-x64 - integrates fine for me (Home Basi X64 NL SP1)

Yeah I get those Mail Filter updates on WU as well, it probably detects parts of SP1 update traces which I leave so it doesn't fail.

I tend to use http://catalog.update.microsoft.com to download updates, it gives you the latest and greatest clean MSU files to integrate without a hick-up.

again and again! if you can't install it, it's only because some of your components are removed. you cannot do nothing for that except make a new install. btw this update is not a critical update 'Windows6.0-KB955020' it add some words in the dictionary for english and german.

I tried it and it works. Maybe you are not using full Vista as a starting point or your package manager cache is somehow corrupted or some service like WMI disabled.

Tried vLite under a clean installation and I still get the message. Only thing I did was remove the other Vista versions (beside Home Basic) from the Dutch SP1 image I downloaded from the Internet (was a "real" image not 1 run by the Winbeta method).

Hi,

I have had both experiences . Cannot get microsoft update CAB files to integrate - I get a bluescreen saying I do not have enough disk space.
Can someone explain what Nuhi meant by "integrate and reinstall " is that not what I was doing ?

Also experienced the endless loop after reinstalling ( without having integrated the CAB files ) caused by the microsoft updates - could not fix this even in safe mode , so I reinstalled again. This time with another version - think it is removing QOS that causes the loop problem

It would be great if we could integrate the CAB files . Does anyone know how to do this please?

Just a guess:
"Install this update to add words to the English and German standard dictionaries"
And yours is neither of those, does that mean a bug in the hotfix. Problem is you are reporting the hotfix integration issue on the full Vista (because vLite integrates first then removes) which has nothing to do with me...I hope

Issue has re-occured in latest 1.2 release with additional updates and KB955020. Really weird as it seems inconsistent, was solved now it is not anymore. Any chance we can get to the bottom of this as it is quite frustrating when all updates go fine for an hour or so and then this 1 screws things up.
