what are you thinking about this multiformat DVD-burner? Any opinions or suggestions? unsure.gif I've got a spot on it thats why i'm asking.
MSNwar
Got a link? I just bought the LiteOn 811-S. It is the new model. The old model is the 411. We have a thread here about it: http://www.MSFN.org/board/index.php?showtopic=11966

The LiteOn 411S is probally the most popular DVD burner ever! Hope the 811S proves to be as good or better.

arggg. it sux - don't get it !

Review at www.cdfreaks.com Click Here

Conclusion.

We have rarely had a drive looking so good on the paper and still failing so completely to impress us. The reading and writing quality of this drive is in many cases just not good enough. It does have its benefits by supporting the DVD-RAM format that is fine for backup purposes, but else to slow. Also the retail package is pretty complete and the documentation is good. It do support ?Correct EFM encoding? allowing it to make backups of safedisc protected discs without much trouble, but you should use another reader to read the image as the reading quality of the LG GSA-4040B is so bad that it creates more read errors than there should be. Another fine thing is that it supports reading all protected audio discs, again the bad thing is that according to the CD-speed advanced audio test, the drive is so bad at extracting audio that you don?t know if the music is extracted correctly. Another advantage is that it supports 24X CD-R writing compared to 16X CD-R writing of many other drives, which is actually not as fast as you think since it starts at 12X writing and uses Zone-CLV technology to reach 24X. And if this was not enough the drive do not support writing all discs at 24X either, and some it writes with very low quality. This disappoints us pretty much, could it be that difficult to write all discs at 24X with good quality? After all the discs is 48/52X certified and works with few problems at 40X or higher in normal CD-Writers.

But how is it for DVD-Writing then? Well it wrote all 4X DVD+R discs at 4X without problems, but according to our quality tests the writing quality is questionable with some discs, including discs from known quality manufacturers such as Taiyo Yuden and Ricoh. Maybe it?s better for DVD-R? It depends on how you look at it, it did write all discs without problems but do not expect that all 4X discs will work at 4X; most cheaper ones do only work at 2X. Write quality with DVD-R was in most cases good enough, since many DVD-R discs are of very low quality we expected some discs to show some problems.

Maybe its rewriting capabilities are better then? Yes we have no real complaints about the Rewriting capabilities of this drive, both for CD and DVD. 24X CD-RW and 4X DVD+RW support along with Mount Rainier support would have been nice though, but there is few drives offering this so we wont criticise the drive for not supporting this.

Are there really no situations where this drive is the best? Yes there for sure is; if you want DVD-RAM support this is THE drive as it also supports DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW in addition to the DVD-RAM format.

Conclusion this time will be: ?THE drive for DVD-RAM, but look elsewhere if you do not need DVD-RAM?.
daze
hm, i've read that before, but in serveral german magazines it was praised on the good reading capabilities. They had some writing errors on DVD+ but not every time.

The LiteOn DVD-burner sounds very good in contrast, i like the "8x" i can see in the description woot.gif. I've got the old LiteOn 24102B here it's my lovely newwink.gif

By the way i can remember some post in a german burning board how you can make your 411 become 811 blink.gif. I don't know if that really works.
MSNwar
Yea I read at cdfreaks forum about upping the 411 to 811. Look at the LiteOn section. BTW, they have a German language section to. I do not read German to good, so I would look forward to your comments newwink.gif

BTW, I live in Germany and found my 811 at amazon.de for EUR 149.00 Its was EUR 238.00 at MediaMarkt.

edit, seen any good sources here in Germany for Reitek media? I have been using Sky for a week now with no problems on a TEAC burner.
daze
you live in germany? for what purpose? i don't like germany ... but that might be another topic.
is "bunt" an international company? *g*

don't ask me about media till i've got a burner. Do you need instructions about getting the 411 to 811? or why do you look forward to my comments?

20 EUR more for an 8x burner instead of an 4x ... i would be dumb if i don't get this one. woot.gif

so i got to go right now or i won't get up @6:45am. Will have a look @work tomorrow.

sorry .. today newwink.gif
MSNwar
Do not know if Bunt is an international company. I know they operate out of Landstuhl and claim to be Germany's biggest ISP. More I think about it they do own ritanet as well. So they might be international. I will ask Joe next time I see him. BTW, I saw you. yes.gif newwink.gif

I live in Germany because I like it here, but we can't stay here forever, so I will have to move in a few years.

The reason I would look forward to your comments is because sometimes the German boards are difficult for me to read when it involves technical issues.

Think about the cost of the media when purchasing the drive. The 8X is only good as long as the media is 8X and those are expensive here in Germany.

Yep, sleep good welcome.gif
daze
Landstuhl? Thats about 80km from here. And where did you see me? In your logfile? woot.gif I will have a look at the instructions and let you know over PM.

I see no probs with the media, i will use the 4x as long as there are no good 8x medias available. I think the better media support will come with each firmware update they release. With this DVD-R you're armed for future (as long as 10x, or higher, burners are released to the public). woot.gif

I was the same with firmware updates on my CD-R (LiteOn 24102B), they released about 10 or 15 updates, and each one got better. thumbup.gif

Now i'll search for better prices for the 811 one .... blink.gif

if you need special media types http://www.cdr24.de/ is a good choice in germany.
MSNwar
Thanks for the link daze. I found the Reitek media recommended for the LiteOn burners and will order the DVD-R 4,7 GB (G) Ritek G04 - 4x Silver Protection 50 Stk. EUR 69.00

They are also selling the TDK CD/DVD-Drucker LPCW-100 (EUR 135.00) and I might get that, but not for certain. It would be nice to have professional looking DVD/CDs for a change. The thermal cartridges cost EUR 9.00 each and you have to buy 4 different colors for color images. Looks like about 20 discs for color images and maybe 40 - 48 discs for black text. One black cartridge comes with the printer. So the printer and four cartridges base price is EUR 171.00. All-in-all; the printer, 4 cartridges, and 50 discs. EUR 240.00.

Surfed around and found these prices for the LiteOn LDW-811:

EUR 149.90 www.snogard.de (Retail)

EUR 169.00 www.alternate.de (Retail)
EUR 164.00 www.alternate.de (Bulk)

EUR 169.00 www.kmelektronik.de (Retail)

Looking around the net earlier this week I have seen some reports that we can look forward to 8+ Gig maybe around 2Q 2004. Hope my DVD burner will support them.
daze
wait for blue-ray disks newwink.gif i heard it will have about 35GB.

@MSNwar:

I think amazon.de is best because of free shipping for boughts over 20 EUR.
XtremeMaC
yes I know
but I'm sure its going to be VERY expensive 35GB hdd's are $30-50

I've read some articles about dvd-/+rw's its been said that all of them are compatible with 8+GB medias
daze
as far as i know $ is nearly same value as EUR so ... over here in germany 35GB HDDs are often as expensive as 80GB HDDs but not $30-50, we only get them for about $60+ sad.gif

Did i already say that i don't like it to live in Germany? huh.gif
MSNwar
daze, yes sir, I was happy about the free shipping over EURO 20.00 myself. Hey, that EURO 20.00 saved goes toward some blank DVDs biggrin.gif

Currency Converter XE.com

US $35.00 buys EURO 28.60 (1 USD = 0.816729 EUR) The EURO is worth almost $.20 more than the US Dollar at that exchange rate. This is the prime time to spend the EURO for anything priced in US Dollars. Your savings are fully realized when make a purchase of US $100.00 or more. Less than that is minor. In our situation we can spend EURO 149.00 (price of the burner) which is the same as spending US $182.00 online from a US source. yes.gif
Skyfrog
I came very close to buying the 4040B mostly because I already have the LG GCC-4120B and it has been the best drive I have ever owned. Very quiet, good looking and well built. The reviews for the 4040B that I saw all said it was very good but a bit slower than the competition. I finally went with a Panasonic LF-D521U instead though, because it supports cartridge based DVD-RAM where with the 4040B you have to remove them or use bare discs, which sort of defeated the purpose for me as I wanted it mainly for archival and backup. Anyway, I think the 4040B would be a good buy unless you want the very fastest drive you can get; personally I'm not in that big of a rush. biggrin.gif

The LiteOn 811S just arrived. EURO 149.00 from amazon.de. Four days delivery time and free shipping.

Note: Made in China, November 2003. That is important because there was a bad batch released out of China dated October 2003. LiteOn will probally recall October 2003 models.

Good to know. I'll get it till i've got the money for it, i hope soon rolleyes.gif. Christmas is very expensive .. mad.gif

Yesterday i saw the complete TechSpec's of it. It only burns DVD+R with 8x speed :/. It's a pitty, but better than nothing.

Go here to get the latest Firmware. I read the description it seems to be needed:

*EDIT* thanks XtremeMaC
XtremeMaC
yes its a pity for pioneer since they've found -rw technology.
I don't understand how philips came with the idea of +rw tech. but I guess once in a while everyone does good.

so if ppl were to have all the money they want
which dvd-rw would they but. not a poll but I've 2 selections to make
1. Plextor's 8x dvd-rw
2. Lite-on's 8x dvd-rw
now I seriosly back-up my game cd's, they've copy protection and afaik lite-on cd-rw's are very good at that.
daze
as far as i know the plextor is not a multiformat burner. i've made good experiences with liteon cd writers. i've got the 24102B (did i say that already, didn't i?) wich is very good in creating 1:1 copys and it matches nearly every media.

so, i've not the money but i would prefer the liteon without testing experiences. but if you're not content with it, resell it. eBay? rolleyes.gif

greetings!
XtremeMaC
they're both multiformat (not dvd-ram though, frankly I don't care about -ram smile.gif )
MSNwar
LiteOn 8X or Plextor 8X? Me, I bought the LiteOn. I could hve bought any brand and decided on the LiteOn for a few reasons.
Reason #1 is it gets the job done.
Reason #2 LiteOn stays up-to-date with firmaware releases.
Reason #3 the 411S dollar vs performance exceeds many more expensive machines in the tests done at cdfreaks.com
Reason #4 811S users in the forums are reporting the same success with the 811S only faster of course and its firmware utilizes a wider range of media.

I have friends that use LiteOn, NEC, Sony, TEAC, and Plextor. We have been colaborating and testing our burners for about nine months. None of them are bad! Some seem to be better than others! It took each of us some time to realize we all have one thing in common. Movie backups are toughest! Creating a backup that will play in all stand-alone players is a mis-match of the blank media supported by each device. We came to the conclusion that specific media brands do not always work in all burners with the successful outcome to play in all stand-alone players. We all have a wide range of stand-alone players as well. CyberHome, Sony, Pioneer, and other less known brands. CyberHome so far works with everything. It is also completely hackable.

We found a perfect combination of DVD Burner and DVD stand-alone Player. The LiteOn or TEAC and the CyberHome stand-alone player. Our single choice of media is the sunstar DVD±R 4X and lately we are having great success with the Sky Media DVD±R 4X. Not to say the other brands will not do the same thing, but they are seriously limited to specific media that are not always available to us!

Why is this important to a group like ours? Simple, bulk purchases of blank media will save each of us a bundle of money. We buy stacks of 100 and pay less than $1.20 or less than EURO 1.00 per disc. Last time we made a bulk order (5 stacks of 100) we paid $0.69 per disc. Thats a lot of backups, but when you consider my home collection is 200 original DVD titles, two of the other guys are converting their VHS collection to DVD, and our childrens XBOX and PS2 monthly purchases ... well, you can see how a PC Club can benefit.

Getting long again rolleyes.gif

I'm made hundred's of movie dvd's burned them with nero. all work fine on standalone sony pq2 player.
I'm using 1x princo media.
Never had a problem, should I continue with pioneer?
I was thinking of getting 8x lite-on as well

I believe 8X is only supported with DVD + on all DVD burners daze. Might be wrong, but that is what I have seen with everything up to this date. However, minus and plus cost the same now.

BTW, I went to MediaMarkt today and they were sold-out of plus media. Biatch! I had no plus discs at home to test the 8X that just arrived this morning, Lite-On LDW-811S DVD±RW. So I ended up with one TDK 1-4X Plus. Also, the 811S did not come with an IDE cable and I wanted a new ATA-133 cable, onemeter for my tower. They ripped me for EURO 20.00.

Yes sir I downloaded the firmware this morning thumbup.gif
XtremeMaC
crap 20.00 euro
why is it 1meter did you make it external like that laugh.gif
MSNwar
I have a tall tower it will be installed in, typical arrangement, but I have to snake the cable up and through a lot of other stuff that is in the way. The one meter was about EURO 4.00 more than the .6 meter cable. Snuck into my wife's purse before I left the house, lol.

The tower has a mixture of SCSI and IDE drives in it, so it is a little more congested than a plain IDE rig newwink.gif

The Pioneer is a good one XtremeMaC. Actually, my TEAC is a Pioneer. I have had no problems whatsoever with it. I have never had to upgrade the firmware. Still using the original firmware.
XtremeMaC
btw u might want to update the link of the firmware
it has too many http tags on it doesn't open the right page
is should be http://www.liteonit.com.tw/ODD/english/index-english.htm
instead its http://http//www.liteonit.com.tw/ODD/engli...dex-english.htm tongue.gif

so final conclusion plextor 8x or liteon 8x
I see u've already made your decision but maybe something u didn't like about the liteon? (i'm pushing too much sorry)

now u got me confused
pioneer & plextor & liteon!! aah I'm going mad which one?

*UFF* EUR20 for an IDE Cable? Never paid so much .. smile.gif

I really dont know if it is worth it to pay for an plexburner. Even if it can burn DVD-RW with 12x speed ... (amazon.de is kidding rolleyes.gif)

Now when i see amazon.com pricing ($20 more) i like germany *g*

I just had a look in a german "burning" board. they are now talking about a ne LG: 4081B. But no experiences yet.

LiteOn was just my personal choice from friends who use it, Drews comments since he actually talks to and sells to a wide range of people, conversation with FthrJack who uses LiteOn and really knew a lot about it, positive reviews, and other LiteOn forum users in the last two weeks. I am one of these people who looks around and talks to people about their hardware on a daily basis. When I see a positive trend among a wide range of people I tend to look closer and listen with an open mind. Simply because some people do not always tell the whole truth about their hardware, lol. That comes with the territory since the first heath kit I guess.

Now, I am taking a chance on the LiteOn 8X vs the tried and true LiteOn 4X which was the initial topic of this discussion. But since other LiteOn 8X users are having the same success as the LiteOn 4X I decided to go with the flow. Besides, if do not like it I can always return it in 30 days from time of purchase. whistling.gif
XtremeMaC
I'll wait for you to test it more smile.gif u've 20some more days anyways tongue.gif
I'll buy it 2004 anyways
I hope you get good results by then

and yes u're definitely right about the ppl who don't always tell the truth(I've seen a lot laugh.gif)

Yea, they ripped me good on that cable. It was just to darn busy to ask a salesperson about it today. Monday or Tuesday when it is less busy I am going back and complaining to the Chief. I know him and maybe they over priced it?

BTW, they dropped the price from 238.00 to 169.00. Still get a better deal at amazon.de yes.gif

The LG 4040b was on sale for EURO 129.00, big pallet of them setting in the middle of the sales floor. Only seven of the LiteOn were left. Amusing to watch people standing there looking at both and trying to decide on which one to buy.
