Later today and throughout the next week I will install the drive and run some tests from a home user scenerio. Anything of special interest you would like to see tested let me know and I will do my best to accomplish it and post back the results.

One of the main things I do with a DVD burner is backup my DVD Movies. This burner allows the use of both DVD-R and DVD+R media at 4X and 8X, respectively. The first test will be to burn one of each type of media on two different brands of media (Sky Media and sunstar). Both are readily available at most retail stores here in Germany. Reitek media which is highly recommended by Lite-On 411S users in the related threads is on order and should be available to me for testing within the next two or three days.

I know it's only been a few days, but any stats or feelings about the drive so far? I am looking to purchase one of thse very soon and still deciding if i should save a few bucks and go with the 411 or just grab the 811.
MSNwar
Just to give you a quick and preliminary test result without the actual details and test screenies because I am in the middle of the tests. I am only performing DVD tests with Nero 6 Speed Tools. The type and quality of media is SkyMedia - R and the TDK + R, both 4X. The 8X discs are not yet available to me. The read/write parameters are consistent, but a bit low. The data verification is also good but the test is not finsihed. I expect it to be good.

This drive is much like the 411S, reviewed at cdfreaks.com Review Conclusion with similar results, except where the the higher read/write specifications of this drive are implimented.

All in all it will be a good drive in the speed and data quality areas. Later, I will be backing up movies and we will see how it goes. I expect it to be okay.
MSNwar
The following picture is the results of the Nero 6 CD/DVD Speed Test. The drive performs as advertised with 4X + R blank discs. Using a TDK 1-4X +R blank disc the test had better than advertised results as it reached 6X at times. The data varification was good. In this test 4.38 Gig of data was written to the disc in 15 minutes and varified for a total of 27:33 minutes. When the 8X blank discs are available to me I will run the same tests.

Next, I will make movie backups, and post the results. Might take the better part of the day.

If you have a LiteOn 811S burner and are the daring type, this might interest you: Using a hex editor it's possible to increase the burning speed for certain DVD media, though use it at your own risk.

This is the results of the Nero 6 CD/DVD Speed Test using TRAXDATA 4X + R blank disc. The write speed averaged 7.44x for 4.38 GB of data in 8:49 minutes.

The SkyMedia 4X +R used in the previous test averaged 4.70x for 4.38 GB of data in 15 minutes.

What is awesome about the results of this test is the write speed reached 8X using a 4X disc! Obviously, the brand and type of media is definately an issue.

Media Details: TRAXDATA, DVD+R, 4X, 4.7 GB, Data, 120 minutes Video. Black Label.

I will burn a few movies within a few hours and let you know how they turn out. It is more of a combination of recording software, media, and player. My objective is to create a backup of each movie that will play in my CyberHome stand-alone DVD player. Hope the TRAXDATA discs work in the player. Let you know newwink.gif

TRAXDATA 4X +R :

Bummer. The movie recorded to the TRAXDATA will not play in my CyberHome stand-alone DVD player. The movie plays on my PC with InterVideo DVD Player using The LiteOn 811S and a TEAC 58E. This does not mean it will not play on other brands of stand-alone DVD players. However, it is no good to me!

A few details. The movie is not encrypted. 3.42 GB burned at 8X in 7:15 minutes.

SkyMedia 4X -R :

In progress. The write speed is only 1X and this is a 4X disc that burns at 4X in my TEAC burner. This is going to be a while. :/

The SkyMedia plays in the CyberHome stand-alone player perfectly. However, the LiteOn burned at 1X instead of 4X. Total Time 47:50 minutes.

It seems that the LiteOn 411 and 811 do very poor with -R media and the brand of media is critical.

Next up is a sunstar 4X -R as I am out of +R discs other than TRAXDATA.
MSNwar
Good results with the sunstar 4X -R. It burned at 4X, 4.34 GB in 15:02 minutes.

Just finshed watching the movie and it was perfect.

DVD

Have to take back an earlier doubt about TRAXDATA 4X DVD+R media. My CyberHome DVD stand-alone player does not support DVD+R media!

Used it in a LiteOn LVD-2002 stand-alone player that supports DVD+R and the movies play perfectly! Here we have a 4X disc that burns at 8X. Good deal!

CD

CD burning at 48X is new to me because my other burners are 6X and 16X. Less than 3 minutes to burn approximately 700 MB rules. Results as follows:

CD 1 - 728 MB - 72:10:49 - 2:53 (728 MB in approximately 3 minutes)
CD 2 - 716 MB - 70:56:67 - 2:50 (716 MB in approximately 3 minutes)
CD 3 - 484 MB - 48:00:64 - 2:15 (484 MB in approximately 2 minutes)

That is approximately 1.9 GB in approximately 8 minutes.

Type of media: Sony CD-R, 700 MB, 1 X - 48 X compatiable.

Data type: Home video, SVCD, MPEG1

Software Recorder: Nero 6

do you know where I could get a 100pack or 50 pack of 4x or 8x dvd+R?

Found out Ritek makes the TRAXDATA discs. See the statement from BB Discs:

Arita discs are manufactured by Ritek using the Ricoh dye. Ritek also make the TRAXDATA discs. These discs are suitable for DVD burners and writers that conform to the DVD+R or "Plus" format. Please be sure that your player is compatible with the DVD+R standard. These discs are GRADE A, 4speed discs and are supplied in cake boxes to suit the quantity ordered.

Conclusion.

The Lite-On LDW-811S DVD±RW is a good buy IMHO. Supporting both DVD±RW is nice because we can burn faster with DVD+R media. The tests were directed at the DVD hobbiest and I focused heavily on blank media. Cost of media can be expensive and no matter how well the DVD/CD writers perform we do not want coasters.

Media, DVD+R.

The ability to burn at 8X using 4X DVD+R media is a money saver. We have to pay close attention to the brand of media used to burn at 8X with 4X rated discs as the results vary. Another factor with movie backups is the stand-alone player. The majority of pre 2003 players do not support DVD+R media. However, almost all of them support DVD-R media. Keep in mind that it is not possible to burn a DVD-R disc at 8X because of the technology.

Media, DVD-R.

Again, close attention to the brand of media is important. Two brands rated at 4X burned at 4X flawlessly (sunstar and TDK). One of the brands rated at 4X would only burn at 1X (SkyMedia). In comparisom, my TEAC DVW50E burns the same discs at 4X. Go figure.

Media, CD.

You have to love Lite-On when it comes to CD writing. My little test with Sony media was good. The home video SVCD I created played in my CyberHome stand-alone player nicely. Three discs, approximately 1.9 GB, in about 8 minutes is not to shaby! Lots of reviews on the internet exist about the Lite-On 411S and its success in the CD Writing area, so I am not going to get into it.

Closing Comments:

It would be great if the media industry could reach a standard, but that might be asking too much. Most of the manufacturers for both the writers and the media are in Asia. It makes sense that they produce products for their own geographical area that meets those standards. We see what appears to be the same media or device with different model numbers and it gets confusing. What may work one way in the U.S. may not work the same in Europe. Thus, results will vary from country to country.

Happy burning newwink.gif
