Some of the videos I view in Windows Media Player 9 are displaying in black/white at one point and possibly in color at another. But the majority of the time they are in black/white. Anyone know what the cause of this could be? There are no driver updates available for my video card from the site. Someone suggested reinstalling my codecs. Where can I go to do this? I've heard of the Divx codec but wouldn't think I needed that to fix this problem.

and what does this got to do with nt4/2000/2003 ??

Yes, it's only doing this with WMP 9 videos.
If a mod wants to move the thread then they're obviously welcome to do so. Are you a mod?

just to clarify
u meant wmp9 videos, do u mean with the extension .wmv?
anyways if the videos work in another player the easiest way is to reinstall wmp9 or the media play codecs...
mod? me? no

would be usefull though...
I'd try searching microsoft help database...(I've never heard or experienced this problem)

No, it affects .avi and .mpegs as well. The only instances I've seen of the picture displaying in black/white is in WMP.

Siggy, you'd have to find out what codec your AVIs are encoded in. Could be DivX, could be XviD, could be Ogg, or could be something else. Usually the File Properties > Summary will tell you.

Thanks AaronXP, I just now checked that and don't see anything related to the codec. A screen shot is below.

XtremeMaC, I also just reinstalled WMP and still get the same result.

For codecs, have a look here
http://www.codecpack.com (it's in foreign, but pretty obvious!) or here
http://www.softpedia.com/ (look bottom left under "Top Downloads", there's a few packs available). Hope it helps.

Thanks for the links guys but here's my question. Why would I need to download these codecs to try and fix my problem when I've never had this problem before? I've never downloaded codecs before. Why would it benefit my situation now?

hehe believe me we never heard of a bug like yours too
if u don't want to install any codecs format it install wmp9 again i'm sure it'll work
but realize or not if u ever downloaded a video off the net the codecs are not usually already installed. so either media player installs those or some program installed it for u that u haven't realized....
if u have time and the internet why not just dl them and try them?
they are more or less harmless....

It's not that I don't wanna download them. What I'm saying is I get this response in any instance of it being used. There is obviously something wrong with WMP.

I just tried completely removing WMP 9 and played a movie through the older version of WMP and it still plays in black/white.

divx
thats about all i ever install, sees me right for most media.
wmp sucks anyway, i never use it to watch video in because its crap at it. cd/mp3's it does great tho...
it does sound and look like you need a codec or a codec update, what version of divx do you have installed?

Well, it's obviously not just an issue with Windows Media Player. I put a DVD movie and it's displaying in black and white too. My DVD playing software is InterVideo WinDVD. I installed the original driver that came with the video card and still get the same result. I've tried viewing in both 16 and 32-bit color, same result and I tried unloading WindowsBlinds to see if that was the cause and still get black and white. Can someone point me to a solution? It's obviously not a driver issue since it does it with the original. Some have claimed it's a codec issue but I do not know which will fix it. I have Dyvx codec installed and have played around with it but to no avail either.

other things flash your graphics cards bios if there is an update..

I reverted to the origigal driver version from the CD that came with my card as a way to reverse the problem. I just haven't updated it yet. There was talk on another board I frequent about the more recent driver releases causing some problems.

I've tried the latest and a few older than that but still more recent then the original that came on the CD with the card. I am going to try uninstalling all drivers completely and reinstalling them fresh and see if that helps.

Sunil, it doesn't only affect WMP but even watching DVDs. I'm running Windows Media Player 9 Series for Windows 2000/XP.

XtremeMac, there is nothing wrong with my hardware or with Windows so why would I wanna downgrade myself to XP? Hint: I'm running Win2K.

This problem (or a similar one) has occured with others. Check here

Have you installed any codec packs? These tend to cause more problems than they fix, beter to install individual codecs. Usually you just need DiVX, XViD and AC3 sound codec.
If you have installed anything like Nimo codec pack or similar, uninstall it and try again.

I have just installed the updated version 2.13.
Display Driver Version: 45.33
WDM Driver Version: 2.13
Release Date: October 9, 2003
WHQL Certified
However, if you'll notice below, Windows still displays the old driver info.
