I need to buy another HDD (the one I've got haven't got enough space ) but I'm not sure what I can buy that will work togheter with my old one.

Now, what I'm wondering is, will a Seagate 300GB, SATA, 8MB, 7200RPM work with my other hdd? (This is a Seagate too BTW) Or does a new hdd have to an Ultra ATA as well?

I don't all that much about what hardware works with what, so I don't want to spend a bunch of cash on a hdd that I later discovere I can't use..

u should go for that only if u have sata controller on your mainboard.

i had seagate drivers for 5 years and no problems. i said let's change a little bit and bought a western digital. till now no problems.
i cant say to u what is better only what's suits your needs. so if u want space get western. if u have sata controler grab seagate.

2TiXer : it would be better if you told us what motherboard do you have and what OS you´re using..

it helps. u don't have sata controllers. so u have to buy a pata (ide) hard drive.

Hey there, I was just navigating through the board...

Let me suggest that you first verify if your motherboard will support such a HDD. Not because it's IDE UATA100 or Seagate or Western, just because of its capacity. Look for support in the producer's site. Upgrade your BIOS if necessary.


BTW, putting in those terms, the Western IDE 320GB(?) would be the best choice, although I always prefer have separate 160GB HDDs. Why? Because you can take advantage of two IDE channels and make your file management much more quicker, specially if you use download utilities and HDD demanding apps.

It's only room for one more.. That's why I'm thinking of 300+GB disk.. That way it's really ulikely I'll run out of space again anytime soon..!

right now, you can probably find 2 hd's ~200-250gigs for about the same price as 1 300gig if you look hard enough and a decent ide controller card can be found for as little as $15. (I myself found a sil680 for $20 and love it) That means more space, faster access across 2 seperate disks and only half the depression when you start the computer one day only to find your disk is dead along with everything on it.
