I cant found information about HDD usage. How many space is needed for full installation of Vista? At http://www.microsoft.com/technet/windowsvi...t/hardware.mspx just write "large disk".
prathapml
Vista will ship on dvd ONLY.
So while definite numbers is not available at this stage, a logical conclusion is The OS alone will need 5 GB of hdd space. Plus allow for more space for apps and swapfile and hibernation, etc.

(just for comparison, Windows XP occupies 1.2 GB approx.)

wonder how far we'll be able to slim it down to...

The size of the DVD is 2.46 GB

Oh FFS...
XP Home + SP2 = 518 MBs and Nuhi and the rest of us have enough trouble with that. 5 times that with Vista... great.

Its not the same, because on Vista DVD are build for different HW...

So 32/64 versions x x86/ia64 architecture

i was wondering the same from a time ago ... do u remember ...

2SimonSays: This is requirement for "Full Aero" Vista... For normal OS it is much less... So I think that Vista wont need futuristic HW. But I will be sure when I will get hand on my copy of Vista Beta biggrin.gif

i remember reading what SiMoNsAyS posted there

its going to be a while till we get that stuff, the amd X2 4800 only runs at 2.4 ghz unless that is refering to intel which will still take some time

2 gigs of ram we all know is a must but i just hope that good 1gig sticks of ram will come out b/c the overclockers will be p***ed off

Here's the beta dvd sizes:

Windows Vista Beta 1 x32 DVD 2.46 GB
Windows Vista Beta 1 x64 DVD 1.73 GB

Looks like the x32 build will probably need more hdd space than x64 build.
Blam-O!

OK, but you are running the Beta 1...did it include Desktop 3D effects ??
muggerfugger
No 3d effects here sad.gif not even good shadows sad.gif lol

people were asking how much space it takes up on the harddrive.
On mine with beta 1, The windows directory takes up 3.64GB of space. 22,226 files.
prathapml
Yup, running Vista beta1 since the last week or so...
Runs pretty decent whether u give it 512 MB or 256 MB of memory.
Occupies 3.2 GB of HD space after install, but refuses to install if your C: partition is any less than 7 GB.
Havent seen any of the desktop 3D (DWM) since i dont have a GeForce FX series card here, which is what that feature needs.

Yup, i remember that one.
But no one should mis-understand that one - because that "average" spec was thought up at a different time. That was a time when longhorn promised absolutely everything possibly imagined, including a fully new 3D interface and an SQL file-system.
Today, it doesnt look all that good anymore - Vista is just an evolution of XP, not a Revolution.
So contemporary high-end hardware should be able to handle Vista pretty well, when it comes out.
