I'm looking for a AMD 939 board without SLI support but i prefer the Nvidia Nforce 4 chipset, with SATA II (opitional RAID)... Any suggestion?
wacko.gif
ripken204
hands down the dfi sli-dr

offers all of that plus more and is the best amd overclocking board out

he said he dident want sli so the recomendation is:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16813136152
its not sli but it dose have the posibilatys for dual graghix cards if your ever intrested
there is also a mod out there to turn it into a sli board
ripken204
oh crap ur right, i just saw best 939 board and sli and got excited, otherwise the board u posted is the best non-sli board
jcarle
In ASUS, the A8N-E is the definite choice.
KamiQuazi
I don't want SLI just because i don't belive the specs im looking at is worth the extra 500 buck for a additional video card for a extra what 10% perfromance gain... and then think of the extra ram required to run them, along with more power... and the list is never ending so... i rather stay with a single until they can impress me more... but im gonna get away from my 32-bit AMD Athlon XP 2000+ (with a very slow FBS of 133 MHz, ok everyone laugh, I am so it is ok), but im am on a PCI Video Card... This board doesn't even have AGP... (now ur laughing)... ok... I want a board with a 16x PCI-E, and at least 4 PCI slot... SATA II, NForce 4, I want RAID (but i don't care if u find a board without it)...

@spazmire11:
****... a nice board... just entered into my considered box...

@ Everyone:
Anymore suggestion

ripken204
the dfi nf4 ultra and thats final
KamiQuazi
'ight im gonna purchase it later this month...

ripken204
u need help on any other parts?
jcarle
SLI is about to die off just as fast as it came onto the market. It costs too much to build SLI machines, and the technology is too young, not many people want to get into it. Or if they do, not by very much. The trend is changing instead to create video cards with dual GPU on the same card instead of SLI solutions. ATI and nVidia are both developing new dual GPU video cards.
ripken204
actually sli is going away, but will be replaced by sli2. and the g71 and the r520 are suppose to be dual slot(not too sure what that means)

yes almost no one can afford sli and it hasnt even reached its full potential, hence sli2, but if u are a hardcore gamer then thats what its for
KamiQuazi
I never liked the whole SLI thing... it to my just made no sence in buy two cards linking them together when sooner or later Nvidia and ATI are gonna make dual-GPUs... and i can't wait... i'll prolly buy one of them over the SLI bullsh*t...

@Ripken204:
Ram i really don;t know much about... all i know is that i need DIMM and i want Dual Channel... I would rather have RAM that was desgined for overclocking since i want to overclock this system
ripken204
the best overclocking ram is the mushkin redline 4000, just make sure that u have a fan on them
KamiQuazi
@Ripken:
I was planning on a watercooling system.. do they make heat spreaders for RAM?
Mekrel
Dual slot means the cooler takes up one PCI slot as its so big.

SLi isnt bullcrap either, there are no card VGA solutions out there which will un tre latest games at 1900 resolution and higher with all the eye candy and AA filtering. There are people who own dell/apple widescreen monitors and such that need SLi.

Although SLi has been too bugy with its vsync, and running atl ower than the monitors native resolution and such.

DFI board is good but it can be problematic, make sure you read up on it before you start building. Most cases needs 1 stick of memory in one of the dimms and to flash to one of the latest bios' although there are alot of bios' around becausea each type of RAM such as TCCD and BH-5 and the like have thier own bios to work best
KamiQuazi
Not doubting u r anything but i have never seen a monitor that REQUIERES SLI, i do admit i could be wrong but i just haven't seen one...
ripken204
who said anything about a monitor requiring sli, unlees u gto confused with him saying 1900 resoulution, u can change the resolution of ur monitor but with a crappy vid card the larger resolutions dont look right but if u had 780gt's in sli then it looks amazing.

the mushkin redline does come with heatspreaders but they got rly hot so u need a fan
JasonGW
I've got an Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe, but I haven't used the SLI. My 6800GT is so **** fast with every game I play that I can't justify any reason to get another card for SLI smile.gif However, when prices drop and I can snag another 6800GT for around $130 or so, and the drivers support has matured, I'll probably get one. No hurries though newwink.gif

Jason
Mekrel
The monitor doesnt require SLI, but playing at that resolution and to obtainplayable frame rate does.
KamiQuazi
I won't go higher than a res of 1600*1200... I have really bad eye sight so im doing good to see that now... but I already picked out the video card.... a 6600 GT
Mekrel
a 6600GT wont play games that resolution,

the 6600GT has a high core clock by only about 8 pipes and a 128bit memory bus which cripples bandwidth thus performance aswell.

but I take it, you wont be playing games?
KamiQuazi
I play games but not a resolutions that high... the highest i play my games are 1280*1024... nothing high... so i don't think i need a card that is at the brinks of technology... no.gif

another vote for the DFI nF4 Ultra-D... i've had mine for about a month now, and was running a DFI nF3 Ultra-D prior to that. great boards, but not for the 1st time builder (tho the nF4 has been much easier than the nF3).

as for vid card choice... the 6600GT will work fine as long as your not trying to game on a dell 2405fpw @ native res.
KamiQuazi
lol... im not a first time builder so im gonna purchase this board... My old board is a MSI something or other Socket A (AMD Athlon XP 2000+)... biggrin.gif

Heres a thread that you might find handy. There are a boatload of memory options on this board.
KamiQuazi
Thanks... but i didn't understand one word of it... lol... really i didn't... I though ram was ram... but it is deeper than that by looking at the webpage provided by porn loader... i need something simplier... unsure.gif
ripken204
just use that guide,if u need to know some terminology then just ask, the guide is excellent and should be the only one u need to look at
Porn Loader
if you have built pc's before i wouldnt worry about it much. grab the dfi nf4. BEFORE you build it spend some time reading the stickies over on dfi-street. also make sure you have a backup rig (desktop/laptop/smokesignals) available just in case the crap hits the fan laugh.gif

my install went nice and smooth w/ some old school BH-5 memory, but gaming stability wasnt so good. that memory guide helped out alot and got me nice and stable. still working on a nice stable overclock (2+hrs of prime)
KamiQuazi
will do ripken... anyways... im looking at a total of system RAM of 2 - 4 gbs any suggestions? I want a very overclockable ram... perfer 1 gb sticks over 512 mb...
@PornLoader:
I still have my AMD Athlon XP 2000+... ani't the fastest thing in the world but it goes.... thumbup.gif
Mekrel
Well, your going to have to settle with 2*1 GB modules if you want the ram to be very overclockable.

because running all 4 dimms with memory means you can only run at 333mhz (PC2700) when using double sided sticks, or 400mhz @ 2T timing when using single sided dims.

However there is much discussion about, as to the performance hit of 2T, alot seem to find once they get the HTT back up with tightish timings the 2T doesnt matter all that much after taking into consideration the extra memory you get.

The Corsair 2GB DDR XMS3200C2PT TwinX 2*1GB modules are good for the price over here in the uk, 2-3-3-6 timings.

@Mekrel:
ok thanks

all depends on the core, if u have s939 amd and venice core or above then the 4x512 will run somewhat faster. the timings will be tighter but it will run at  2T and some people say that that make difference over 1T but its really like just a 2-3% performance decrease over 1T. if u havea core before the venice then u may not be able to run 4 sticks of ram and if u can then the speed will only be able to run at 133mhz b/c of the crappy cpu memory controller.
*

with the dfi board and a cpu venice or better then he will be fine running this

with the mushkin redline 4000, alot of people have been able to get 2-2-2 2T timings and with 2x1 the best that any1 has gotten over at XS is 3-3-3-8 1T @ 295MHz

so the ? is do u want tight timings but with 2T or 1T but with loose timings

the 4x512 doesnt overclock as high as the 2x1, so if u want to overclock ur cpu a whole lot then get 2x1 with the crucial balistix

actually all rev e cores can run 4 ds dimms @ 400, it just cant do it at 1T cmdrate.
Mekrel
Oh ok, cool.

I read somewhere that only single sided sticks could, I wouldnt know im stuck on my 754 setup sad.gif

What is the 2-2-2 2T timing mean? I have no clue at all... no.gif

EDIT: Fixed Quote
ripken204
@mekrel- since u have 754 then ur right in ur case, and for one-sided sticks, those allow u to run 4x512 at 1T but there are virtually none of them and they are rly crappy if u can find them so its not worth it

@lostincyberspace2007- 2-2-2 is how fast the ram goes, the main one that matters is the 1st number, the numbers mean how mny times cycles the ram has to go through to complete a full cycle, obviously the lower the numbers then the faster the ram goes
KamiQuazi
So what does the other numbers mean?>

A good starting point!!! thumbup.gif
I'm drooling already

If you want 2Gb of memory take 2x1GB not 4X512MB because your system will only run with 2T Command rate because of on-die memory controller that athlons have. I f you want 2x1gb take ballistix, they're are best right for overclocking. I would recommend taking 2x512MB G.SKILL LE or OCZPC3200 REV.2 or GEIL ONE, all of them are TCCX samsung chips and you will clock them easily to DRR600. I Run my OCZ Rev.2 at DRR612 2.5-4-3-7 timings and like 20 other timings set to tightest. For power suply I would recommend OCZ POwerSTream 600W or PC Power Cooling 520W. ANd DFI is the best mobo on market today, no doubt, nobody can prove me wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DFI owns ASUS period. Take DFI SLI-DR $169 and get ready for SLI, also this one has SATA2, some versions of -D non sli don't have SATA2. That second graphic slot willl just wait
KamiQuazi
@Kamil:
I would rather have 2 1gb stick due to upgrades later... and i don't want SLI because just like dual-cpus there WILL be dual-gpus... so im just gonna wait... and what would the point of have 2 cards that already have 2 gpus? whistling.gif ...just curious on that one... but anyways... can u link me to the PSU? I was looking for GEIL in 1 gb stick but couldn't find them... I want SATA 2.. the DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra doesn't have any? Damnit then... i need a mobo with SATA 2... i'll be back later @ 5 or so... i have to go to work... so peace out... tILl +H3N m5PHN.ORG 15 T3H lE3t!!! thumbup.gif

I think this would be the best choice for power supply:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16817104153

The fan is green LED btw if that matters.
Mekrel
I wouldnt say the DFI owns the asus board, at overclocking it has more features and voltage options at hand which makes it a better board in the eyes of an overclocker.

However the extra space between the PCi-e slots on the Asus and the northbridge heatpipe are very good, esp for people who want 3rd party card coolers which wouldnt fit in the DFI board.

The Asus is flakey with bios support for the X2 chips aswell from what I have read.
