Fridge-RaideR
The Making
makin cd atm, just copied files to XPCD directory
starting nLite
choosing the directory
thickin all options, except for slipstreaming a servicepack, coss I use xp pro with sp2 slipstreamed

Now at hotfix point, adding:
RVMUpdatepack1.2.2Lite
XPize uAE (v1.2)

At driver point:
The NVIDIA chipset drivers.
The Marvel network card drivers.
My sata driver (text mode).

At remove components point, I choose these dependencies:
Printers
Camera's

And these components I dont remove:
-Aplications
*Paint
-Drivers
*Ethernet (LAN)
*SCSI/RAID
-Hardware Support
*ALI IDE Bus Driver
*CMD IDE Bus Driver
*Firewire (1394) Support
*Intel IDE BUS Driver
*Logical Disk Manager
-Languages
*Dutch(Netherlands)
-Multimedia
*MIDI audio support
-Network
*Internet Explorer
*Internet Explorer Core
*Map Netowrk Drivers Wizard
-Operating System Options
*Disk and Profile Quota
*Extra Fonts
*File System Filter Manager
-Services
*DHCP Client

Then at advanced I choose these items not to be removed:
msconfig.exe
scrnsave.scr
ftp.exe
ping.exe
route.exe
nbtstat.exe
netstat.exe
net.exe
tftp.exe
ipconfig.exe
tracert.exe

Then at the remove box, I put the files listed in clints nLite.ini.

Then some tweaks, important ones:
do not parse autoexec.bat
dont page kernel
dont precache

Installing and Analizing
Made ISO, put disk.sys in my i386 (somehow nLite doesnt do that) and went installing.

There were some quite file not found errors during install, also in windows.

Internet Explorer didnt function properly, MSN wouldnt start. HELP OMFG WTF DONT U HAVE MSN CLINT? anyway angel.gif , couldnt get defrag software to work and printerspool service was also gone. also some stuff I needed for webcam was gone.

So I went to the remove files list of clint's nlite.ini to check if I had to keep files.
Luckely I know wot most files do so I took about 25 files away needed for:

internet explorer
defrag software
msn
webcam
printers
network browsing on lanparties ;P

The Conclusion
Now after 2 installs I can run all of my tried programs. Everything seems ok with the printer service and imaging service, though I dont have a printer here, and I wont go through the trouble to get my webcam workin in virtual pc. So the next thing i will do is make one final iso for testing in virtual pc. Just to make sure. And then I willburn that iso, format and go live with that cd. ^_^

difference between his cleanup/pre-removal and my cleanup is.. about 80% wot I remove is the same has he removed.. but where I stopped with unknown files, he went on n just backupped them incase he needed them. I was gonna do the same thing but lil more carefull. with "last acces time-stamp" I was gonna check after 2 weeks of using programs n stuff, wot windows aint using. but he did it the hardway tongue.gif

my nLite brought own xp install down to 290mb, and with stuff of my own, to 224mb... this is with IE, with printers, with dhcp, with imaging stuff.

with my nLite but preremoval from clints ini, my xp install got 274mb.. then with a combined removal of my cleanups and his cleanups it went down to

200mb biggrin.gif

quite a record since i use a LOT of programs (n games), and i need a LOT of dependencies.

in the attachments u see:
*my settings from nLite
*my regtweaks, to be used at T12 just like clints, with the $OEM folder way
*1 cleanup file, mine and clints merged smile.gif there were no files I removed from the cleanup files exept for the ones that werent there when I had a fresh install, apearently nLite removed those.

ps: Oh yeah, feels good to be back in action ^^

Fridge-RaideR
Troubleshooting

This is the post where I explain errors u might encounter and that I encounter
XPero
Very handy for newbies and for people who want to rethink about their ways of installing Windows;)
Fridge-RaideR
well more like Pro's with problems tongue.gif newbies should stick with nLite smile.gif (no offence people, but this if u do this, ur bound to experience loads of errors)

and I think dirtwarrior wants to see the oemfolder tongue.gif and thats pretty much it... it isnt bigger.. I manually do my cleanup, dont have extra programs, dont use minlogon smile.gif
dirtwarrior
hey fridge post $oem$ folder and last session ini Cool thumbup.gif
Fridge-RaideR
lastsession.ini is in first post
oemfolder is in post 6
theme is in attachment 2, and those 2 links of image shack work
superleiw
nice

this should become an useful thread

nice regtweaks u have there ... took me a while to go through all of it thumbup.gif
Fridge-RaideR
this was mine 3 months ago, even larger ;P but nLite has tweaks now too, so I thinned it out..
slimzky
ei fridge, u want ur printing service but in ur remove list theres spoolsv.exe & print.exe.. so u mean they arent needed for printing services?

all files beginning with ras (ras.dll, rasauto.dll etc..) are needed for DUN ryt?

modemui.dll, is this necesary for DUN?

i want to add ur list in my current removable list but i dont want to mess with my DUn... so can u post files that is needed for DUn thats in ur list? thnx
Fridge-RaideR
where i say GONE, it means clint removes it, but I dont remove it.. the file is gone from my list smile.gif

DUN=?
slimzky
DUN- Dial Up Networking
Fridge-RaideR
dial up, man I dont have experience with that.. thats such a long time ago :|

I supose all the ras stuff.. dont know about that other file though
jmbattle
Not bad Fridge, although skimming through your software applications list, I cannot see any programs that rely heavily on Windows components - indeed most of those programs are in my "AppsThatDontNeedToBeReinstalled" folder - several megabytes of well coded programs that run straight from the folder, without countless registry entries.

Gotta love 7-Zip too newwink.gif

James
dirtwarrior
Oh fridge I didnt just want to look at your $oem$ folder I wanted to download it and use it newwink.gif
Clint
Heh, dirt..you lazy warrior! newwink.gif

@ Fridge..if you use my regtweak you need to check it against the "GONE" files you are not removing so you are not removing any entries for them.

and I see that you are removing "Driver Cache"....is that wise?

You can also remove this from the regfile:
CODE
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.hta]
@="hta_auto_file"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\hta_auto_file\shell\open\command]
@="\"C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\mshta.exe\" \"%1\""

it's for WPI purposes, doesn't apply here.

Holy crap, that gave me an idea for my future cd's. All the apps I want preinstalled will be ones that I dump in the $OEM$\$Progs folder, and this way I'll only have to script making the shortcuts in my startmenu... which will keep my reg mostly clean.

Until I run the apps and they create whatever reg files they absolutely need. But still, this is easier than switches and crap.

Yes, my WPI setup looks exactly like that... yes.gif

I just copy over the needed files, shortcuts and a few regentries....it involves some preparation initially but is well worth the time invested thumbup.gif

Well, when installing new driver dependent stuff..like Daemon tools and such...don't you get asked for XP disc?
Railman5
Hey Fridge-RaideR.

Nice work.

I'm gonna give your method a try this weekend when I get some time - (yea right)

Seems a cook way to do things.

thumbup.gif
jkey
Thanks Fridge-RaideR!

That is THE POST thumbup.gif
gonna try it in few days...

hmm...maybe i'll post my own experience with optimal (not extreme) settings for wide range users and computers yes.gif
gdogg
thank fridge will be testing it for what i need soon
reg tweak mostly apply to your tastes, but i will be making it work for me

well ive gotten far so far,
had to edit some files, thats for sure

since i wanted to keep luna theme
had my windows directory as OS
had my documents and settings as USERS

kept wmp 9
added ryanvm

used xp home, so i could rid myself of oembios.* files

and had my own drivers,
after cleanup, im like 191MB \OS
Clint
Fridge, I think you should just remove those "clint" referenses...it confuses ppl I think....only generates more questions.

"my regtweaks, to be used at T12 just like clints, with the $OEM folder way" ...for example.
..there was a guy asked what clints is...hehe!

just keep my name out of it...only confusing for the poor newcomers with "clint this" and "clints that"...wasnt ment to be used like this anyway.. newwink.gif
gdogg
how would i go about importing that stuff to the registry?

how would i know it worked, i tried
REGEDIT /S remove stuff.reg
but it didn't seem to do anything

does this have to be done this way only through cmdlines.txt?
do i have to point to cmdlines.txt in another file?
superleiw
If you want to stop services, not just disabling them using the Registry method
create a new command file and use this :

net stop "Automatic Updates"
net stop "Computer Browser"
net stop "Distributed Link Tracking Client"
net stop "Help and Support"
net stop "Server""
net stop "System Event Notification"
net stop "System Restore Service"
net stop "Task Scheduler"
net stop "TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper"
net stop "Themes"
net stop "Upload Manager"
net stop "WebClient"
net stop "Windows Time"
net stop "Workstation"
net stop "System Event Notification"
net stop "COM+ Event System"
net stop "Network Location Awareness (NLA)"
net stop "Remote Access Auto Connection Manager"
net stop "SSDP Discovery Service"
etc

that way you can remove files related to those services without rebooting, I think

-not tested yet if it works during windows installation phase
gdogg
i found my errror, it wasn't the space
i made a second file with only the tweaks i needed,
and cause of this, and the fact i was without sleep for too long, as i still am

forgot the registry file line of the file tongue.gif
dirtwarrior
Click to view attachmentCan somone check this out for me and tell me if this is right. I made it myself and really not that good. All help will be apreciated thumbup.gif
Cybertronic
dirtwarrior, you've made a spelling mistake in cleanuo.cmd which it should be cleanup.cmd yes.gif

As for cmdlines.txt

You typed:

CODE
[COMMANDS]
"REGEDIT /S regsettings.reg"

It should be:
CODE
[COMMANDS]
"REGEDIT /S RegTweaks.reg"

Where is the RunOnceEx.cmd file? confused.gif
dirtwarrior
Thanks I am a slow learner blushing.gif but I make up for it by trying hard whistling.gif
ok wrere should I put the runonce.ex?

question: what kind of stuff goes into runonce?
is inf right?

dont know exactly...codepages for various fonts and stuff, anyway some websites get messed up if u delete them
Cybertronic
If I remove c_850.nls, it makes my Windows unbootable as it says this file is missing blink.gif, it's fine without the removal of the file yes.gif
gdogg
yeh i must agree about those codepage files

3dgameman.com was the frist site to mess up when i removed some of those in the past

but, thanks fridge-raider, ive gotten pretty close to what im looking for, great work, i'd also like to thank nuhi, jeremy and clint

All of this was done a long time ago by others. http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=80511

Sir Isaac Newton's Phrase, "Standing on the shoulders of giants", springs to mind.
gdogg
ive encountered i like bit of a problem,
i did the cleanup and the tweaks, and nlite just as you have, (except kept a bit more)

now when testing, i cannot get outpost pro firewall nor sygate firewall nor any other one i downloaded to work

im gonna try without the tweaks, and cleanup, to see if this helps at all

any ideas?

So..? wacko.gif

I do not think this is that well done but still offers a lot more than those "giants" did..., a guided setup that includes more than just "this you can delete and this not".

..phuii, this "sandbox" mentality is taking its toll... confused.gif

The point being that that it is not as original as people, on this forum, would have you believe. I was once a devotee of this forum (nLite), but no longer. Everytime I used nLite it went wrong but, since using the methods of the master - http://www.bold-fortune.com/forums/index.php?showforum=13

I've had a perfectly functioning machine. You lot need to stop congratulating yourselves so much - the wheel was invented a long time ago...but not by you. no.gif

"the master"..that is almost as scary as the sometimes fanatic Nlite fans here.. laugh.gif

Windows was actually invented by a bunch of much more clever engineers than we sorry a** bunch here..(and other forums).
We are merely just tearing it apart....the credit goes to BG himself.... thumbup.gif
red_house
At last... I've found a level headed "nLiter" whistling.gif

That word, "master", never fails to draw someone in. However I'm extremely bored now, and I have other, much more interesting, things to do...such as clean the toilet.
