We are looking into deploying XP using Altiris and WinPE. I can't find any info on when to install the Aclient on the new machine and how to get the virtual machine info on that new machine.

Have you tried the Altiris support forums? Seems they could help you out more over there. But maybe someone here is using WinPE with Altiris.

Hello Jazkal,
I have tried Altiris forums, it seems that deployment server 6.5 will make use of WinPE but it is still in beta. I thought someone must have got it to work with DS6.1.
Thanks
Biji
Hi,

We run the XP deployment using WinPE and Altiris DS 6.1. What you will have to do is run a simple batch file that installs the AClient again ithin the WinPE session so that the machine can report back to the DS console. This has to be done as the machine changes not only the name during the WinPE session but also the drive letter of the local hard disk.

Once the AClient is installed from within the WinPE environment, all further steps can be run/controlled from DS end.

Cheers, Biji

Altiris DS 6.5 now fully supports running their AClient in WinPE, and using WinPE as a deployment environment - they also support linux as a deployment environment as well, and of course the old DOS that they have always supported.

And later this year, they will also support native 64-bit environments for x64 chips, and 64-bit Itanium systems too.
