Hi

This is just a quick overview of the USP's

The USP's are all fully cumulative, which means that they contain everything from Service Pack 4.

USP 5.0

USP 5.0 contains all hotfixes for Windows (all that I know of) and for the built in versions of IE/OE/DX etc.

- USP 5.0 Gold (build 10) - released; contains ~350 hotfixes and security fixes

- USP 5.0 SR-1 (build 11) - released; contains >400 hotfixes and security fixes; corrects several registry bugs from SP4

- USP 5.02.2195.16a RETRO ("Gurgels Own") - released; contains more than >50 additional hotfixes and all security updates; DOS setup is fixed. Since this is my personal edition I've removed AU and SPAD, and added >127 GB IDE drives from text mode setup and onwards, because this is safe. Up to date as of 1/1 2006 with security fixes (quality assurance!), and 4/1 2006 with hotfixes.

Planned

No further releases of USP 5.0 are planned.

USP 5.1

USP 5.1 contains everything from USP 5.0 and furthermore it includes IE6/OE6/WAB6/SE56/MSI31/BITS2 and all hotfixes and security updates for those too. It also supports >127 GB IDE drives from text mode setup and onwards.

- USP 5.1 (build 18) - released

- USP 5.10.2195.21 - released; contains more than >50 additional hotfixes and all security updates; DOS setup is fixed. Includes April 06 Updates btw.

Planned

No further releases of USP 5.1 are planned.

USP 5.2

Planned

USP 5.2 will contain everything from USP 5.1 and furthermore it will include NET11 + NET20 + DX9c + MDX9c + MDAC28SP1 and all hotfixes and security updates for for those of course.

USP 5.5 / USP Extreme Ed

USP 5.5 / USP Extreme will contain everything from USP 5.2 and furthermore just about everything which is available for W2k at no charge from microsoft.com, including RDPClient, IE tools, TweakUI, MSConfig, Messenger etc. etc. Most of these extras will be optional components. (And Messenger will be detached from MS OE by default!) Furthermore it will contain a control panel applet named "System Options" which will allow you to enable/disable most of the known registry tweaks - and a few new ones newwink.gif

I'm considering support for SATA storage, updated chipset .INFs, and Universal High Definition Audio (KB888111). Updated MS components (various MS*.OCX/.DLL's) would be nice too, and the standard Codec drivers.

No third party applications/tools/executables are planned for the USPs - only exception might be this - the USP Extreme.

Notes

PLEASE NOTICE that the former "USP Version 5.1 Basic Edition" project has been renamed to just "USP 5.1" - the former "USP Version 5.1 Standard Edition" project has been renamed to just "USP 5.2" - and finally the "USP Version 5.1 Extreme Edition" is now named "USP 5.5" or "USP Extreme".

About MSJVM3810, I'll wrap this up as a hotfix when I get the time.

Yep - it's pretty hard to "release" stuff without a place to ul - but I have a few ideas newwink.gif

  1. CONGRATULATIONS

  2. Add me to the list "This topic should be pinned/sticky" thumbup.gif

  3. At the start (January) of the project you were to build two "things", one being only the hotfixes (about 30 MB then) and the other one the "enhancements", including IE etc (I saw lists with 20 items).
Right now the USP50SR1 I just downloaded is a 238+ MB package, and I fear it won't go with my Spanish computers...

Am I the only one that sees interest in a 30-60 MB update with core things only?

I don't think so - but I won't make them. The full update is the only way I can make a quality product. Sry confused.gif

PS - I guess I could do a rollup with MSURP + the standard security updates only... but would anyone want that?

- Version 5.1 Standard Edition - will contain all of the above + NETFX11 + DX9 + MDAC27SP1 refresh (and all hotfixes for those of course) ...

latest version of MDAC is 2.8 SP1. latest version of NETFX is 2.0 which came out a few days ago. will these be included in your next release of your USP?

btw - is Win2k hotfix KB886765 included in your USPs? i've been wondering if the files from the KB886765 hotfix are safe to use under Win2000 or if that hotfix cause problems under Win2000.

KB886765 hotfix mentioned in support article 886765:

Gurgelmeyer
Hi smile.gif

Well - good thing I havent added NETFX11 yet laugh.gif

About MDAC 2.8 SP1 I've had that question before. My concern is, that I know MSDE / MS SQL Server 7 + 2000 works well with MDAC 2.7 SP1a Refresh - but no one has been able to tell me if it runs well with MDAC 2.8 SP1 too. Actually I'd much rather add MDAC 2.8 SP1 - but I really need someone to test it with MSDE / SQL Server 7 + 2000.

KB886765 is included in the current USP 5.0 SR1. It doesn't seem to cause problems.

Best regards,
Gurgelmeyer cool.gif

So .NET Framework 2.0 will be in it? Cool. biggrin.gif
Gurgelmeyer
Yep - it's now scheduled for 5.1 Standard Edition.

Gurgelmeyer,

I have a cd kicking around with the patched version of explorer.exe. It is the same version number, just patched for 256 color icons. If I can find the CD, I'll attach that file.
Crash&Burn
Contents of USP...

X:\2KBootCD\USP50SR1\support\tools\support.cab - 10,373 KB
X:\2KBootCD\USP50SR1\support\tools\dtc\support.cab - 11,360 KB
Any reason for this duplication ? The contents of which are nearly 99% the same.

The i386/svcpack folder would possibly be useful if it actually listed the KB######.cat's - as is the USP doesn't even list what hotfixes it contains.

Could also seriously cut down on the size if it was diff'd against SP4, and only contain what isn't already in SP4.

Yep smile.gif

Reason 1: That's the way they are organized on the MS SP3 and SP4 CDs.
Reason 2: The 2000RKST.MSI and DTC\2000RKST.MSI files depend on the exact order (!), version, and size of the files in each cab.

You can't download many those hotfixes anyway.
The rename is done to make 100% sure, that the USP will interfere as little as possible with any of the original hotfixes and security updates.
If you dont think they are useful, try removing them and run SigVerif rolleyes.gif

Just a quick update: USP 5.1 is now in beta. Everything (including IE6) integrates perfectly.

hope it will check out OKE.

Gurgelmeyer,

I have found the modified version of explorer.exe. It is attached as a file ready to go on a cd. You will need to run expand explorer.ex_ explorer.exe to make it a regular version. Please download with care. It is the same version as the one included with the USP50.

the_guy
-I-
so whats its value anyway??? - will it JUST improve the icons in 256color-mode? cuz realy (who uses that any ways).
Crash&Burn
Who uses it? Take a look at a 16x16 icon in the quicklaunch and the same 16x16 icon in the system tray, Opera would be a good example. The system tray icon looks like crap.

Is that the one I did? Just curious, like.
Gurgelmeyer
@the_guy @Targaff - Looks like both of you patched this file succesfully smile.gif

@Crash&Burn - I totally agree, and this is really a "must have" for the Extreme Edition (the standard 16 color tray icons are not exactly a feast for the eye laugh.gif)

Thanks, guys! thumbup.gif

slippykillsticks
Gurgelmeyer, I have a question.

Will this patched version of explorer.exe still be protected by Windows File Protection? If not, I think we should stick with the regular explorer.exe.
the_guy
The new one will probably be. It is installed with this, and it is the same version.

the_guy
Gurgelmeyer
@slippykillsticks - Yes - it will be cached in the dllcache and WFP will protect it. smile.gif

How are you getting a hacked file to be protected by WFP?

See, that was my question. I don't understand how it is possible, blink.gif
-I-
probebly because it is installed with an MS sp- installer.
yet still it probebly stil needs to check agains a md5 checksum?

so my question: where is the checksum hosted???
on the MS-update site, or in a local inf file on your cdrom.
(in the later case) just editing the file would be enought (als long as MS wont update the file with a newer version - wicht, seams probebly rather unlikly since win2k aint in mainstream anymore.....

Hi smile.gif

I'm in and out of hospitals these days (I'm not well at all), which is why I haven't been able to sign in here as often as I want to. To make things even worse, the CPU fan on my computer just broke, so I cant keep it on for work for more than 10 minutes or so (sigh!). I'll get a new (used) one tomorrow!!

To make WFP protect an unsigned file is not as easy as I anticipated. Now, there's no such thing as "impossible" laugh.gif - but I'll look into this later on. sfcfiles.dll has some interesting undocumented entry points, and the MS .cat's also have some interesting undocumented attributes, which Setup uses to determine stuff. And - let's not forget - NT5 does to some extent support load-time executable patching - although this is undocumented too.

Best regards,
Gurgelmeyer cool.gif

Version 5.1 Standard Edition - will contain all of the above + NETFX11 + DX9 + MDAC27SP1 refresh (and all hotfixes for those of course) ...

I hope you include both .NET 1.1 and .NET 2.0, note that .NET 2.0 is NOT backward compatible with .NET 1.1.

Also, I hope you include d3dx9_24.dll, d3dx9_25.dll, d3dx9_26.dll, and d3dx9_27.dll. These 4 DLL's are installed by the five most recent bimonthly releases of the DX 9.0c SDK redistributable. Essentially, you need to run at least four of these DX redistributables to be able to get all 4 DLL's and be able to run all DX 9.0 apps. There may be other legal ways of distributing the 4 DLL's that allow you to package them more compactly. See here for more details on this issue:

What was said about .NET is correct - both 1.1 and 2.0 are needed as they work in parallel as opposed to overlapping. The latest DirectX December 2005 Redistributable can be found here - http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/directx.html - and it contains all of the new DLLs 24, 25, 26, 27, and 28.

The correct version of MDAC is MDAC 2.8 SP1 which can be found here - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en

The newest available full version of Windows Media Player 9 is 2980. However, version 3250 can be obtained by adding the hotfix KB885492 after installing MPSetup.exe, which is preferred.

Actually - if someone made a 2k driver pack it would be nice whistling.gif

I could help you with the Intel portion. Using how-to advice from this site, I added Intel mobo support
by putting the compressed form of the INF and Cat files in my souce i386 (about two month ago).
Have been using the $oem$ folder for the rest (LAN/VID/AUD) but - again -
Using advice from msfn, have put all that into an INTEL.cab (driver pack) along with the cats (meow).
Mind this has not been tested except with one intel mobo - but has a lot of stuff in it.
I use the same system for testing builds, but since that and the Dells we use all are Intel based.....
When I get back from my 3-day, I will verify it has the latest parts and post it here.

So, if the "haltcpu"/"overheat" bug is fixed by adding a reg entry to have W2k
NOT treat an HT P4 like two cpu's, and I see that reg is placed after using USP5.1
THEN it would be emplied that the latest ver of the hal is being used. Correct? confused.gif

So WHY does M$ update and Windows update sites think it needs the urp? wacko.gif

Not complaining, mind you. I can live with it. Just curious.
ed 1/20/06
DOH! blushing.gif You already mentioned this in another post. But did you included the new filter driver
(but not register it) in the USP 5.1 build? How do I check if it is there, and (un)registered?

One thing dandy to add for a service pack is the vc6 run-time files. This is one or two files (since most of them are already there). The vc6redist program (which places them in Win98/NT), does not work under 2k, and the files are already present under Windows xp.

-I-
Those 2 files, of wich one is gdiplus (if im not mistaking), should also be distributed by dotNET 1.1 - (will get included in next release),

but if im wrong here, please give us the mames of the files that you think nead to be included...
