It's a toss-up between the X1800XT and the 256MB 7800GTX, but the recently released 512MB 7800GTX pretty much kills them both.

Read here: http://anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2607

The problem if you haven't figured it out by now is that the 512MB 7800GTX is a real power hog (A high-end power supply is recommended, no exceptions) and it'll cost you an arm and a leg for one.
daz98
yeh... wat powersupply is need for these 2 x1800 and the 7800gtx and wat was the watts powersupply for the 512 7800gtx

I hope you realize that there's an EDIT button... confused.gif
Aegis
Or you could get 7800GT SLI...
daz98
yeh i dont understand...wats the difference between the sli and the normal one...which one is better because i was thinking the normal one was better on average with all the tests...and one other thing is it out yet???
does the sli mean you can put two of these cards together to make it one big powerful one...That would be bloody awsome except it would cost at least about $2000 australian which is like one trip to the states and back.
daz98
also with the power supply... what one would i need to buy to make this card awsome...you see im getting a pretty much whole new system and all i need is the graphics card and te power supply...at the moment i got a 300 wat one and that doesn't really help my 6600gt card so that is not going to even get close to getting the 7800gtx 512 working properly and one other thing would i need to upgrade to the best cooling system...Does the card get hot or is the heat fine and the power the only problem???
thanxs in advanced

For the 512MB 7800GTX, Nvidia recommends at least a 400 watt power supply with 24A on the +12V rail, which another words means a high end power supply is necessary. No more cutting corners with cheapo $50 power supplies. I would recommend looking at the OCZ Powerstream 520W, Antec TruPowerII 550, Seasonic S12 600W, and whatever else that has Nividia's SLI certification on the box will be fine.

ok sweet i think ill go for one of the power supply's u mentioned. Anyway does it matter if you have a huge power supply that ur computer doesn't use all up on...because im getting the card but before i get the card im going to get the power supply and i wanna know if i have to much power and not as much resistance will it harm my computer. cause the card itself is like 400wats and add my other hardware which would make about 550watts so if i get a 600 wat thingy will that mean 50 wats will go to waste and harm the computer or will i just be there for extra. Because if it is there just for extra then ill get the 600watt one

thanxs
ripken204
get the ocz powerstream 520
suryad
If you get the 512 mb version of the GTX then yeah the 7800 is better. But if you get the regular GTX then go with the ATI.
Mekrel
Il'd still go with ATi for 3 reasons:

1. ATi's aniostropic filtering is far superior.
2. ATi's new ring memory controller, you have not seen the last of this yet smile.gif
3. ATi Tray tools, omg this app - I can't see how anyone could live without it.

Absolutely agree hands down. Article & Benchmarks

PSU - OCZ PowerStream 520W minimum.
daz98
ok the 512 gtx ill get...if i get one of the other two should i still get the same powersupply the ocz powerstream 520. But if i get the 512gtx wont i need a better powersupply then 520 because i have 550watts recieving???Also i need a new harddrive so im going to upgrade to sata or sata2...One question with using sata's can they connect to any motherboards???

thanxs
ripken204
well if you want to get the ocz powerstream 600...
daz98
would that be fine though...would the 50 more watts be fine for my computer??? and just one orther thing whats the difference between sata and sataII
daz98
dont worry about last post just found out...sata is 150mb\sec speed sata 2 is 300mb\sec
Jeremy
Daz, why don't you stop asking so many questions and go read some stuff on your own? A 600W PSU will do you fine. I'm getting the 512 and the 520W. www.anandtech.com <will tell you lots.
cyberloner
that 2... i will choose ATI...
ATI graphic show prettier scene in game....
ripken204
i just got the evga 7800gt and im loving it smile.gif aoe3 on all high settings

and now i can play doom3 on all high settings with 16x AA

Jeremy
i just say graphic is more better
i know nvidia benchmark is higher than ati...
i am using nvidia too last time... but when switch to ati and using it...
i feel ati is more better in graphic.... while gaming...
i am using nvidia nforce 4 mobo by the way...
maybe u have better suggestion ... please let me know...
i never touch 7800 =)
Mekrel
Jeremy, your point is what?

A more expensive card outperforms a cheaper one? Wow, who would have thought.

What cyberloner say is true, ATi's AF implimentation is of better quality - I will dig out of the screenshot that portraits this the most.

The thread is about a "better" card, and yep if were on about speed then the GTX 512MB is the best card but when I think of the best card, I take price/performance and image quality and application compatabilty into the equation.

The X1800XT is cheaper, you get 512mb of GDDR3 ram, aniostropic filter is much better, it has a programable memory controler which can be operated for different scenarios, and recently has been made to beat/catchup the 256mb GTX in OGL API games, something ATi lacked in before due to nVidia investing the makers of OGL.

Heck, I would argue that a better choice would be a either an XT or a 256MB GTX - the 512mb whilst a bloody good card is way to expensive to justify it. 500 pounds for a card which will be tops for 4-6 months? Its pointless.

Either wait for the price to go down or buy the alternatives I have mentioned.
daz98
alright thanks guys...i was at camp for the last 7 days so i couldn't reply. Sorry for all the questions before just really eager newwink.gif . I'm not actually going to get the gtx 512 sli...it is a lot of money so what im going to do is get a xfx 7800gtx it is about $400 - $500 cheaper then the 512 so that's is what ill do and i will get a psu of ocz powerstream 520. One other wuestion so if your 7800gt works fine everything full graphics this will work really good right..What were your system specs ripken204
