can i overclock a cirix -300 processor from 233mhz to 266mhz or wont this make any diference in performance for linux (mandrake 10.2)

Cyrix processors are not recommended for overclocking. Furthermore, a gain of 33 Mhz does not show any improvements.

Apart from boasting "Hey! I've got a Cirix 233 running at 266!"

They're known to run hot already at normal speed, and die suddenly when overclocked.

ok maybe i shouldnt, and its only a normalish fan and heatsink, what was the thing about green heatsinks?

not to mention Mandrake can easily run on a 233...that is unless you decide to run everything all at once in the same window... linux doesn't need a fast computer to run well...thats usually a windows OS thing...

Linux can run on a toaster and still work fine.
That was a joke.... But seriously, I've got two linux boxes at home, both running Debian; one is a 300MHz P2 and the other is a 500MHz AMD-K6. Both have around 128MB to 192MB of RAM and work great... No overclocking needed!

How did you manage to link the cd-rom to it so you can install linux?

Was it bluetooth? ROFLMAOPMP
PS. Just joking, no offence meant...

wow what a toaster
my main problem with the cirix 233Mhz is that it takes 5-10 minutes to boot up
but i have a new question now.
can i overclock an 866Mhz P3 or a 700Mhz Celeron
bonestonne
Oct 27 2006, 08:29 PM
you can overclock almost anything in a computer with a clock rate. its just is it safe to do so.
whats this P3 running? if its booting linux, 700 or 866 doesn't make a difference. you said you were using mandrake, why not try ubuntu? just a different grub environment. still good ol' linux. ubuntu can boot in about 2 minutes or less on a 1.1GHz processor [from experience] and about 1 minute on a 1.4GHz processor. is it a server or a just a normal linux installation?

my mandrake box (cirix-300 233Mhz) is a my samba server
ubuntu 5.04 didnt work
my computer which is 98se\xppro\linux (suse or ubuntu)
has a 700Mhz Celeron Processor
but im going to probably get a Pentium III 866Mhz
so can i overclock a 866Mhz P3 to 1Ghz

why not just buy a 1.1GHz celeron off ebay?
it is a 370pin socket right? if so, just hop onto ebay and look for a faster 370pin processor...im no big fan of overclocking, too many risks.
i have a ton of processors out of computers at the dump..i pulled one out that i regret [466MHz] but all the others are 866+...i have them as a backup for my old tower in case it dies. in fact, it almost did a while ago. if you've got xppro on it, just opt for a faster processor, it'll last longer.

Oct 30 2006, 02:51 AM
i dont really use xppro, its just there for something that doesnt run on 98se or for testing
ive already flashed the bios so that the maximun speed processor i can support is a 1Ghz procssor
im planing to get 3 PIII 866Mhz Processors
so i dont mind over clocking one to 1Ghz

Naaw, that's not a linux toaster...
this is.
I saw that when it was new, had to google a bit to find the link. (yeah it isnt running nix in the pic but it sure could!)
Anyways, don't overclock a cyrix... better yet fry the thing by running 12v and gnd leads across it, then roundfile the thing and stick in a nice PIII cpu. I still use tons of PIII cpus around here, those things are very good performers.
Lesee... dual p3-600, P3M1Ghz laptop, P3-500 laptop, dual celeron 433, dual celeron 400, 3x P3 933 chips waiting to go in an STL2 and another mobo. Yeah, I guess I am a bit P3-mad.

p3 isnt compatible with cirix cpus, cirix cpus use socket 7

Doh!
forgot that little bit of info.
K6-2 would be much better then the cyrix, but a s370 mobo is dirt cheap nowadays...

Dec 6 2006, 11:26 PM
is a k6-2 socket 7 because i have a board which has a k6-2 on it
Jaqie Fox
Dec 7 2006, 12:02 AM
it is super socket 7.
socket 7 @ 100FSB and a few other (multi voltage) capabilities.
note in such old mobos, it is done with jumpers or dip switches manually and great care must be taken to set them correctly for the cpu intended.

ok, i dont have any spare amd k6-2s anyway though
