Thank u Maximus! biggrin.gif
Your updates are better than Gape's USP2.1a... yes.gif
jimmsta
Wow, multiple releases of useful patches in just the past 3 days... you're really pumping these things out, huh.

I'm going to try and get the next English release of Win9xPP out this weekend, and will included all of your patches, maximus-decim.

I am surprised that there isn't more discussion of this on here. Are people testing and/or using this cumulative update? Or have most people settled on Gape's unofficial service pack at this point?

Phil
glocK_94
I guess most people don't need to reinstall a pack at the moment but sure it will get downloaded!
Anyway it's true that maximus-decim hasn't been thanked enough for this so here you go:
Thanks a lot man !!! Keep the good work. thumbup.gif:
Fredledingue
I'v downloaded it. Many thanks to MaxD!!! smile.gif

But I would like to know how this package position itself in regard to uSP.2.1a...

Is it a post-uSP2.1 update or a full upgrade since year 1998?

Do I need to install uSP2.1 or not? If yes, before or after?

etc...

It's wierd that the readme mentions nowhere the uSP... blink.gif
jimmsta
@Maximus-Decim: (In reguards to the post above this one): Is your Cumulative Update a replacement for uSP? I'm just wondering, as this is what I get from your original post's description. If so, It's freakin great, and works wonderfully - I MAY be removing the uSP from Win9xPP in the next version, if this is the case. Please get back to us on this subject!
Max_04
Surely this update pack for win98se is more updated than 98 SP2.1.
For me it's necessary to take and merge some updates of Maximus Decim Cumulative Update not present in 98 SP2.1.a.

A fusion/integration to obtain one stable product...
Fredledingue
I also thought of a couple of things to add in the "readme" file for this package:

-Not only the included fixes, but also what it doesn't include. Seems overkill? No it isn't. For example if it doesn't include updates for IE, WMA codecs or DirectX, it might be useful to know it.

-Give a date of the latest update included. I do NOT mean a date of release for the package. I mean the date of release of the most recent update or file included so that we can look for updates following this one.
Usefule to know which patch must be applied post-Maximus Decim Cumulative Update 2.30.
bpw1111
Fredledingue: AutoPatcher done by Soporific, has work by Maximus Decim included in it. Also it is current and automatically installs what is needed to get you up to date. It is a large download, but well worth it. http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=80800

Hope that helps

... just a thank you for putting this together and keeping it updated. I also liked Gape's version ... but I have read maybe he isn't well or something along that line. ... miss his project and his input ... but you have been a big help ... I find the Auto-Patcher is a nice program but is is more than I need ... I use your update and then add almost everything else that you mention in your "order of install" file. ... I still install Gape's last update first right after a fresh install of Win 98SE ... the reason is that I like the Windows 98SE startup and signoff logo that is in his update. Do you know if that was his "invention" or is that available from somewhere else to download ? ... that's the only way I know how to install it on my machine ... run his 98 SP 2.1a first just to get that 98 SE logo installed and then I go with your MDCU v2.40 update and everything else. ... can you add this logo to your update or site ... I searched on Google but couldn't find that particular logo anywhere for download... if it is Gape's invention then I can just get it from his last update. ... again, thanks for your project ... works for me.

Somehow I managed not to see this project when it first came out but I'm sure glad I now did.

This is exactly what I was looking for to recommend to clients who still use Windows 98 SE. A simple patch that gives them the upgraded security patches and basic features (Native USB, Copy 2GB and 137GB+ Hard Disk support)

Thanks a million times MDGx!!!

Will you be releasing 2.50 soon with NUSB 3.2 thumbup.gif

What about for Version 3.0 you integrate the 137GB patch (2225). Its been tested quite a lot and seems stable and reliable so could be installed on all systems. Would just make the patch easier to use.

All people would have to do, is double click, follow the prompts and sit back as their Win98SE machine is updated with all the latest mods.

Thoughts?

Hey MD, the silent switch doesn't work. Did you try it?

I've mentioned this about your other "silent" switches and you've never replied.

Hi MD. I've decided to use your cumulative updater in AP, hope you don't mind. As i still wanted to keep all existing functionality, i had to go thru your installer very carefully to add an entry to the module bat file for every update that you included. I got most of them but i also uncovered a host of mistakes and other things. I hope writing this post wasn't a waste of time, i have never actually conversed with you but its not for the lack of me trying.

The list of problems with this release:

* Your list of updates included in the _README!.TXT file inside the installer is all wrong, please update it ASAP.

* the following is a list of updates you list as being installed by your cumulative updater but in fact are not installed at all. They seem to be all obsolete hotfixes that you should remove from your list. I don't want anyone bugging me to update my Win98se hotfixes list for unnecessary stuff. The list is:
229670, 239697, 241134, 242937, 246387, 266039, 273468, 305575, 329128, 827656, 896559

* The list of updates that aren't installed fully, ie some extra files and reg entries are missing that are installed by the stand-alone installer:
942763

* There are some updates you list that are red herrings for the USER. If they try to find out about the update, they get nowhere, as there is no other information, and the number does not correspond to a microsoft KB article. We need more info please. The list is:
247583, 266039, 268064

* Other obsolete updates you list are:
928388, 929120

* Errors in list: "VBRUN5SP2" is actually "VBRUN5SP3"

and that's it! I have some other questions but that's enough to start with. Please reply MD ...

thank you very much for your post, its good to hear you can use AP to fix mistakes by other programs.

OK, i have an announcement to make ...

!! DO NOT USE THIS UPDATER UNTIL ALL PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN QUARANTINED !!

Quarantine Warning Details:

At exactly 10:03pm AES, i discovered a critical bug in the Cumlative Updater 2.50 - If you install this, and then install Revolutions Pack 7.11, you will not be able to use Auto-Patcher (it won't work) -- this is because the Command.Com file which controls the DOS side of the OS can't use the environment switch /E:nnnn as you normally can. It is not known at this time what the exact cause of the problem is, but until we know more, you are well advised to steer clear of even downloading this critical bug infected updater. Don't even mention its name!

This will result in critical system failure for all programs that rely on this feature to work. The list of known applications that are affected and are still in use in the world is the following:

* Auto-Patcher for Windows 98 SE

That is all.

Yay. Thanks for the major update. Unfortunately i can't use it until we work out which thing in your updater is causing the problem with RP and the command.com environment switch - is there a way you can test for this?

the following code works on every test machine i have made:

CODE
%COMSPEC% /E:6120 /K "%LOC8%\code\AutoPach.bat" "%LOC8%" %debug%

and it doesn't work on a machine with the Cumulative Updater 2.50 installed first, and then with Revolutions Pack 7.11.

but this code DOES work:

CODE
"%LOC8%\code\AutoPach.bat" "%LOC8%" %debug%

which says to me that command.com isn't working as expected. my code simply needs to be able to set environment space dynamically, i can't get around this.

This problem does not occur on any machine i've built where i've also installed Revolutions Pack (RP) so the problem isn't RP. It's only when your cumulative updater is installed first that the problem i outline above happens. Interestingly, it doesn't occur if the Updater is installed after RP. I hope this gives you some help in tracking down the problem. I've already asked Tihiy via PM if he can help with this so this won't be new to him, hopefully he's already worked it out, he's a smart fella me old sparring partner!

Hi all,

I have narrowed down the problem to a relatively new update (still don't know what it is) but it's not 'just' in MDCU so we can rule out anything to do with the way MD's installer actually works, its one of the updates inside it. My latest AP release that i am testing has now suddenly got this 'bug' so now i know where to look. As soon as i find it, i'll let everyone know.

So has the download in the first post to 2.50 been updated to include the fixes?

Hi all,

I have more info on the problem i reported a few posts back ... there's another factor that i've only just discovered: you also need to install the Environment Space fix for Auto-Patcher to stop working. I *still* haven't found what is breaking the ability to set a SHELL command in CONFIG.SYS, which is then causing Auto-Patcher to fail. But, the problem can be avoided by the USER deleting the SHELL command from CONFIG.SYS and so its now OK to use MD's Cumulative Updater. It's pretty thorough so i'm happy that i can now recommend that people install this.

Hi ... would also like to know the answer to Post #29 (01-17-1008) : "So has the download in the first post to 2.50 been updated to include the fixes?" .... I had downloaded an earlier version of 2.50 before all this discussion of outdates and updates started. thanks, duffy98

Hi ... I have used this update ( Maximus Decim Cumulative Update ver.2.50 (New!)) three times in the past 2 weeks and have noticed that once I run it on my Win 98SE machine the USA - Eastern Time Zone and other times have dissappeared from my machine. I helped update a friend's computer and my computer twice before I realized that it was possibility related to this newer update. I only have the Alaska time zone available and mostly the far East locations. The 3rd time it happened I ran your MDGx Daylight Saving Time update and my Eastern and all other time zones were back. I am posting this so this can be checked out and confirmed by others and if it has happened to others, the fix or repair seems to be the MDGx DST update. I have done a fresh install of Win 98SE and the Eastern USA time zone was there and then when I run the Maximus Decim Cumulative Update ver.2.50 (New!) the Eastern and other USA time zones are gone. I noticed this Sunday when my computer didn't change the time as it should of. Still a great update to have but I need to know if others have had this problem. thanks ...

Maximus Decim / others...

I downloaded and installed the latest version 3.05 and never saw anything about the two Optional components that are now part of this download. .... the Zip-folders and Spider Solitaire. There was nothing that gave me the option to install or pass on these two items. Just curious if anyone else had noticed this when they installed the latest version. I have installed this update on two Win 98SE laptop computers and it installed OK but those two options never appeared either time for me to make a decision to install or not install. I already have Spider but was interested more in checking out the Zip-folders program.

thanks,
