That explains it! The counter is a special custom 5.5 bit signed integer that goes from 0 to 23, and was overflown by 3.

Maybe PM is a better place to ask, but can you tell me what you had to change to fix it? I noticed this on another forum, and it seems to happen when you have unread messages and delete them before reading. To me, it seemed more an IPB bug rather than a per-forum issue.
