Hi,
I have just created my first Custom installation disk using Nlite and it the final result doesn't work.

(I'm doing all my testing an a VM 5.51)
When I start the VM and boot if from the CD it says that he can find any HD

When I start it from the original CD everything work fine.

any suggestions?
(I'm starting all the process again using this manual http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=28005)

That means it's missing the hdd controller drivers.

My virtual machines work with everything removed, maybe you set it somewhat different, SCSI?

Anyway try keeping all IDE and SCSI drivers/hw support.

Yes in did!
On my VM I set a SCSI HD, when I had removed it and added a IDE HD it worked.

How can I make the disk support IDE, SCSI and SATA devices?

Well I download my Intel drivers and integrate them. Then you can remove the default SCSI drivers. But this can get tricky so always test before you format working partition, if it even gets visible.

As for VMWare don't know, it probably uses some of the default Windows drivers.
