I don't know if I'm the only with this problem.

But after apply the "Vista Performance and Reliability Pack Unofficial Release" in explorer I can't rename or move files/folders.

- Problems with Move files/folders (doesn't work)

- Problems with Rename files/folders (doesn't work)

vLite Windows Vista Ultimate 32bits up-to-date created with vLite 1.0 Final.
nuhi
Why are you posting here? vLite can't control file operations.
Dynaletik
vLite has got nothing to do with this, thats right.

I also get this problem after installing the 2 hotfixes. But they are BOTH BETA! A beta from MS, you know what that means. tongue.gif
I hope that this is fixed when the fixes get published officially. newwink.gif

BTW, 6666 posts nuhi!!! Do not write anything from now on. tongue.gif

and how is the average user supposed to know that? whistling.gif

as most people don't have this problem with the updates, it's obvious you look towards your own setup and what's different about it compared to everyone elses.... and as a vlite user, i also thought the same thing because i have the same problem. ok it's not a vlite problem but you can hardly blame someone for thinking about it. smile.gif
nuhi
Dynaletik, haha number of the quad beast.

marc2003, it worked, he applied the hotfixes then it doesn't work. Main possibility is either some antivirus software or hdd controller drivers.
If he thinks that it's vLite then reinstall full Vista, apply hotfixes, see what it does. If it works then reinstall vLited, apply hotfixes and come to conclusion.
I know that vLite came out too early before people learn all the built-in quirks of Vista. And I know 2 people who are using these hotfixes with vLited Vista without any issue.
Bottom line: yeah I could have been more considerate in my reply, sometimes it's just that 6666th post.

Because I don't know if is a hotfix problem or a problem with something of my vLite Vista Ultimate installation (i don't know, some hidden devil check of MS). confused.gif

I'm sorry nuhi for open this thread. blushing.gif
marc2003
right i've just installed a copy of my vlite-d 32bit vista in vmware. competely barebones install. no vmware tools, no software, no drivers.

at first i can create/rename folders no problem. but after installing kb937979 x86 it goes wrong as per the original post and my experience. you cannot rename folders.... so it does "seem" to be a direct relation between a vlited install and these updates. puzzled? i am. you?

i'm now about to try a clean non-vlite install to see how i get on. smile.gif
nuhi
marc2003, with that biased attitude you'll have to be specific how to reproduce that issue if you confirm that it's something removed.

hehe. attitude eh? all i said was seemed in inverted commas..... i wish i hadn't bothered..... sad.gif
nuhi
You edited your post to look more friendly and I welcome that.

Anyway I read about this issue all around the net. Could be that they all removed or disabled something. In essence if you compare then if you used unattended with vlite you must copy that same xml file to the full version because it can be due to Administrator user or something like that.
Also it's kb938979, not kb937979.
rezzo
I don't know if this is useful, my Last Session.ini:
nuhi
Thx rezzo, I followed your pictures and with all removed confirmed the problem.
Now installing full.

edited 2 minutes after i posted. the exact change was

"puzzled? i bet you are"

i changed it to

"puzzled? i am. you?

anyway, nvm i just won't bother with these updates. my vista flies along without them (thanks to vlite - i am grateful for that)... smile.gif
Dynaletik
Ok, if I vLite my Vista and install the hotfix I get the problem as told. If I integrate the Hotfix into the Vista-DVD and then vLite and install it, it works! No error, but copying files takes shorter, so the hotfix got installed.
nuhi
Oh.

vLite - Unattended - OK
vLite - Unattended + Tweaks - OK
vLite - Unattended + Tweaks + Remove all - Not OK

Gonna see which removal is causing this, my apologies for being defensive but this one is one in a million. I am puzzled.
It probably needs some service running.
marc2003
well i vlite-d my disk at least 3 months ago if not more. can't remember what version, sorry....

no tweaks and it wasn't unattended. this is what i remember removing

system restore
windows defender
uac
indexing/search
accessibility options
windows sidebar/welcome centre
drivers

other than that, i left it pretty much as is. i left superfetch alone and didn't disable any other services as far as i can remember. smile.gif
rezzo
I touched a lot my services.

All Shell32 Updates for Vista are causing this error after modifing the source with vLite. The only known workaround is to integrate shell32.dll fixes into a new DVD.
nuhi
It's some specific modification, not all. I managed to go to the half the ISO size and the hotfix still works.
sIn_maxo
Oh man...I just noticed this a minute ago...so I came to vlite.net and tcha ~ram!!

"The KB-XXX is causing problems with naming folders bla.."

Oh man..I just did a fresh instal of Vista..theres no workaround?

This may be a question for another thread but I wasn't able to find it. How can you integrate hotfixes into vista DVD before running vlite?

I have just installed another version vLite version without removing the Performance and Reliability components... I'll let you guys know how it goes...
Solivagus
This might be an issue with the vlite edit thing, as I have yet to find another site that has someone saying they have these problems. A de-activated service or removed component seems the most likely cause.

If this is the case perhaps we should all post our last_session.ini and wether or not your vista compatibility and reliability pack works with it. We could narrow it down then, this is probably a good idea anyway because it would give Nuhi a better idea of what SP1 components are necessary (dependencies etc.) as the changes necessary in SP1 affect some pretty basic stuff so might require certain things.

Status

Problems with renaming and moving files/folders

On startup (never any other time that i've encountered) I get the following error:

"Explorer.exe - Application Error

The Instruction at 0x09bb0000 referenced memory at 0x09bb0000. The memory could not be read."

The address seems to change, I can't remember hexadecimal strings so you'll have to excuse me for that. Not sure if it is relevant

@ YACO: I did it with this utility: Vista Update Integrator. But it is still beta and needs the WAIK installed!
nuhi
Found the issue, I can't believe that this was causing the issue. Certain reg entries must not be cleaned in the
'HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\FolderDescriptions'.

Components which have this problem are:
Game Explorer
Printer Support
Sidebar
Media Samples
Windows Search
Sync Center

You can remove all other and the KB938979 will work just fine.
Fixed in the next version.

Imagine how stupid this was, now gotta leave those entries there, good thing is that they don't matter once the component is removed, it was more of a cosmetic cleanup.

The fix on the running machine probably would be to uninstall that hotfix, fill in all the default values in that reg key and reinstall the hotfix.
sIn_maxo
Ok...wow you were quick! But yeah...i tried unisntalling the hotfix, but the bug remains...wich means...
Format time..again.

Now im going to use that Vista Hotfix Integrator since this Performance patch does wonders for me.
Is it WAIK really necessary? Its almots 900mbs download...30m for me. sad.gif

So this Vista Hotfix Integrator its used before or after the vLiting process???
mj084
it must be one of these:

because I haven't remove this 3

have you filled in the default values in the reg key?

use hotfix integrator before using vLite
nuhi
mj084, I gave you the list, it's not "one of them", it's all of them from the list.

All you need is peimg.exe and a batch script to integrate hotfixes.

Now I'm debating between reformatting now with updates preinstalled or waiting until next version of vlite comes out... any tips as to when this is coming out to help me decide? whistling.gif

Ahhh nevermind... I can't wait anyway... I'll just format it now.

Thanks for figuring it out so quickly though,

This isn't just a vLite issue by the way, its affecting a lot of OEM copies too, I can post some links later if you want. Forgive my ignorance, but when you say 'default keys' in here: 'HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\FolderDescriptions' do you mean just create the '(Default)' entry again or am I missing something? I installed the updates last night before checking for issues, and look what happens.... Couldn't remove them either. I'd hate to have to reinstall if I can help it. Thanks, and keep up the good work nuhi!

Wow, I second that.

thanks nuhi. =)
nuhi
DigeratiPrime, it was a pain, especially when I saw that I did nothing wrong.

wintertiger, oh that's great news, I hope MS reads this and fixes that hotfix installer to be more flexible.
Default is what would be on the full - retail Vista there, few entries with class numbers. I can export the one you need, let me know which version of Vista.
BUT the issue is that reg tree is protected probably and simple reg import will be denied, but you can try, if nothing else you could add the missing ones manually.
wintertiger
Thanks nuhi, I'm running Ultimate x64 right now, I appreciate the time you're taking to solve Microsoft's problem. I'll PM you a link to the discussion on the TechNet board so you can check into anything new Microsoft comes up with regarding the issue, it gets more interesting around pages 4-6 I think.
nuhi
Well they can always say "you shouldn't have tampered" so they are safe.

Here is the x64 Ultimate clean export of all the entries attached.
wintertiger
Thanks, and yeah, Microsoft is off the hook...
rezzo
nuhi, can you share the entries for the Vista Ultimate x86?

thanks.
marc2003
i've just been comparing that reg file to my x86 version and it's identical from what i can see - i haven't checked every line but i've checked as much as i can fit on screen when they're side by side at the start and the end of the file. smile.gif

and it worked straight away - didn't have to re-install the updates. just imported the file and bingo.
Rudi1
Thanx Nuhi, this reg file work fine with 86 version too! thumbup.gif
nuhi
marc2003, wait a second, it fixed your rename issue or just the reg import worked but it's still the same?

yes. thumbup.gif

doesn't even need a restart. one minute rename doesn't work.... import the reg file and it works immediately.
nuhi
Ok, now someone with the 64-bit to confirm and we're done.
Or I'll make a quick virtual test...

reg fix doesn't work for me no.gif I can move/rename files, but not folders (vista x64 ultimate).
nuhi
silenec, you do realize that this is not just vLite issue?
I recommend reinstall on Monday when new vLite is out, and think twice will you install that hotfix before it's officially out.

little offtopic:

integrate hotfix with vista update integrator then used vlite to slim vista ultimate x64, works fine...
