Where can I find Windows Movie Maker (ME Version) for Windows 98?

Alright, I'll put this topic to bed...

The only place you're going to find it is in a install of Windows ME. Any other place would be warez since there are no publicly available links to it to download.

Sounds like you're out of luck.

not true, movie maker can be installed as part of 98se2me.
admitedly you need winme to use it.

but you want it for 98fe and there is an api missing in 98se but im not sure about that
you should ask mdgx about movie maker because it works with kernelex from ages ago
and it is part of 98se2me last time i used it
computerwizkid
To:MDGX and awergh:
What version of KernelEX was it?
awergh
not really sure but it was an early version i think it was when it was still called kernel update project

98SE2ME installs Movie Maker (MM) exe(cutable) from WinME CD-ROM/CABs [if you have them] only as part of option 3.
This has nothing to do with KernelEx.
I have not tested KernelEx with MM exe on 98 SE/ME.

If you d/l + install 98SE2ME, you can see PATMM.EXE in C:\9!M :
http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=46349
O3.BAT can be opened in Notepad and contains the lines you can see that install moviemk.exe [patched WinME exe] by recreating the exe from patmm.exe, but only if you have original moviemk.exe from WinME CD/CABs.

Patched MM exe can be downloaded here:

IMPORTANT:
WinME Movie Maker MUST be installed ONLY TOGETHER with WinME COMDLG32.DLL +
SHELL32.DLL because of interdependencies!
How to use Movie Maker:
Start button -> Programs -> Accessories -> Multimedia -> run "Movie Maker"
shortcut.
Backup NOT necessary because original files NOT replaced.
All option 3 files install ONLY as SEPARATE option with Control Panel
Add/Remove Programs RESTORE function in case of errors/lockups.
Option 3 REQUIRES you to ALREADY have:
- WinME Retail/Final/Gold/RTM Full/Upgrade/Step-Up/OEM/MSDN 4.90.3000 English
setup CD-ROM inside your 1st CD/DVD drive (if more than 1)
- OR ALL WinME *.CAB files ANYWHERE on your local disk(s)/partition(s) into
the SAME directory/folder!
- Internet Explorer 5.5 or newer ALREADY installed:
http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#IEX
I STRONGLY recommend to install options 1 or 2 BEFORE installing option 3.
CAUTION:
WinME files installed by option 3 may change and/or lose Win98 SE interface
functionality, stability and/or performance!
How to install option 3:
Start button -> Programs -> 98SE2ME -> "98SE2ME.PIF - MAIN PROGRAM" shortcut
or (double-)click on C:\9!M\98SE2ME.PIF or (double-)click on
"C:\Program Files\98SE2ME\98SE2ME.PIF - MAIN PROGRAM.PIF" -> press Y -> press
3 -> wait for reboot.
Option 3 also backs up original Windows 98 SE files into:
- %windir% [usually C:\WINDOWS]:
EXPLORER.EXE 4.72.3xxx.xxxx = backed up as EXPLORER.98A
- %windir%\SYSTEM [usually C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM]:
COMDLG32.DLL 4.72.3510.2300 = backed up as COMDLG32.98A
DIMM.DLL = not backed up because does not exist in Windows 98 SE
DOCPROP.DLL 5.00.1897.1 = backed up as DOCPROP.98A
DOCPROP2.DLL = not backed up because does not exist in Windows 98 SE
FONTEXT.DLL 4.10.1704 = backed up as FONTEXT.98A
MYDOCS.DLL 4.72.3xxx.xxxx = backed up as MYDOCS.98A
NETPLWIZ.DLL = not backed up because does not exist in Windows 98 SE
PLUSTAB.DLL 5.00.1528.1 = backed up as PLUSTAB.98A
SHELL32.DLL 4.72.3xxx.xxx = backed up as SHELL32.98A
SHSCRAP.DLL 4.00.950 = backed up as SHSCRAP.98A
IESHWIZ.EXE 4.72.3xxx.x = backed up as IESHWIZ.98A
WEBVW.DLL 5.00.0312.0 = backed up as WEBVW.98A
- %windir%\WEB [usually C:\WINDOWS\WEB]:
IMGVIEW.HTT = backed up as IMGVIEW.HTO
How to restore your original Windows 98 SE files:
- Start button -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> select
"98SE2ME Option 3: Restore Win98 SE Explorer, Shell + UI" -> click Add/Remove
button -> reboot.
OR:
- (Double-)click on %windir%\INF\O3RES.BAT [%windir% = usually C:\WINDOWS].
IMPORTANT:
IF you have ALREADY installed option 3 [see complete list of files above] at
LEAST ONCE BEFORE, AND IF after that you have DELETED the Win98 SE *.98A
BACKUPS [see complete list of files above], you MUST NOT REinstall option 3,
because IF you do, you will NOT be able to RESTORE ORIGINAL Win98 SE system
files anymore!
In such case you MUST RESTORE Win98 SE system files from Windows 98 SE CABs or
setup CD-ROM BEFORE trying to REinstall option 3!

Similarly, you can d/l and install Wupg98, which installs patched MM exe:

* Unofficial Windows 98 SE Upgrade Pack (WUPG) Pre-Fall 2006 installs 60+
Windows Updates, USB Drivers, Internet Games, Movie Maker etc:
http://www.bpa23.host.sk/wupg.html
WUPG [24.1 MB, English, free]:
http://www.mdgx.com/spx/WUPG98.EXE
More info:
http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=72297

But in my experience [as stated in 98SE2ME READ1ST.TXT] MM exe works with 98 SE *only* if you install the other files from 98SE2ME option 3.
Of course, you're welcome to experiment as you like.

So dare I ask the question,Can I run Windows Movie Maker 2 on 98.WMM2 is free!! woot.gif thumbup.gif

It doesn't if I have to use KernelEX,Its that I want to reedit movie trailers and post on the internet.The other video-editng programs are just plain bull**** expect IMovie but only works on a Mac.

And I do not have a Windows ME CD. no.gif
Andrew T.
If you can't get Movie Maker running and are desperate to edit video content, try looking for an old Microsoft app called videdit.exe. It's a rather simplistic AVI editor from the Windows 3.1 era with a few bugs, but for what little video-clip editing I do it works fine.
BenoitRen
Andrew, it doesn't seem to be available from the Internet. sad.gif Can you upload it somewhere, please?
computerwizkid
Nah,I downloaded that once and HATE IT.It is so simplistic and I need a complex editing program.
So,Is there a way to run Windows Movie Maker 2 in Windows 98?

Don't think so. Stuff like VirtualDub or ABC Videoroll won't work for you?
dcdcdc
Fully featured pro standard. So mental application needed.

for 98SE
for 98fe don't know
free for personal use

Tad buggy with XP laugh.gif

You really don't have to go through all this trouble. To get WMM from WUPG98, run the installer so that it extracts the nessesary files to a folder on the computer, but cancel setup before it actually begins to install (the part when it swtichs to DOS command prompts). Then, go to the folder where the files were extracted, find the WMM folder, and copy it to your computer.

Of course, you can always you free Video Editing software, like ZS4, Avid Free DV, VirtualDub, and plenty others. I actually have a list of urls of windows movie maker replacements, so I could post that if you wanted.
eidenk
Forget about ZS4 on 9x really. Current version doesn't even initialize it's GUI here and older version are more than a tad buggy.

Best freeware multitrack video editor is Wax IMO.

NO, computerwizkid. Windows Movie Maker 2.x requires XP and WMM2 is already included in XP SP2 and the WMM2 files are dependent on some XP system files. so forget about it and consider buying third party video editing software instead.
BenoitRen
I still want videdit.exe sad.gif

Or use Wax. It's free and does pretty much what WMM2 does but more.

If you legitimately have Windows ME installed it's on Windows Update. Update #287564, WMM 1.0. Kind of as an extra downloadable freebie app to those that are legitimate, I guess.

For crying out load.

Yes, I quite agree. But I would say instead to use WinRAR to open up the WUPG98 setup EXE, so you can easily see what you need and don't need to copy to your hard drive. Just move the mm1 folder to your 'program files' folder. If you are asked for dlls or whatnot, try copying them individually from WinRAR/WUPG98. Worked for me, but I do have SE installed. Maybe install SE sometime?

Open %windir%\INF\MOVIEMK.INF in Notepad.

You can also get an idea from 98SE2ME READ1ST.TXT, under the "98SE2ME.PIF COMPLETE GUIDE" chapter [see "* Option 3:"]:
