Fresh project (not by me) started to provide drivers for VESA-compatible video cards:
http://www.bearwindows.boot-land.net/vbe9x.htm
(alpha for now)

There's also Scitech SNAP driver with wider device support, however, currently it is confirmed to handle only Intel integrated graphics up to G965 series and Radeon 9xxx. It is available per request.

Mate this is a much needed project.

I hope it works as it will allow Windows 98 desktop use to go on way into the future.

My brother is looking for drivers for his ati x1650xt agp. I'm sure he'll be glad to test them

Unfortunately, X1650 XT (and X1950) were out after X1900 and are based on chips not supported by those drivers.
Edit: but heck, it may work with VESA drivers. I'll post them later when have feedback.
Tihiy
bump!
Please find 5 minutes to test it.
So far it is confirmed to work on Radeon 9xxx series, Intel 915/945GM.

At the moment I only have a 3dfx Voodoo 4 card on my Win98 system.

I can test it with that if you think it will help.

An italian user that I know can test these drivers, I'm his referent because he doesn't speak very well english.

Video card in question: X1650pro agp 8x 512MB

Send me download link in pm, then I can communicate results after test.

EDIT: Better than nothing. tongue.gif

I PMed Tihiy more than a week ago, but he/she didn't reply, even though he/she has posted yesterday. Bad Tihiy. sad.gif

Sorry, but Radeon 9xxx has been already confirmed to work.

So far, this driver has been confirmed working on the following chipsets not supported by Windows 9x: Intel 915G,GM,945G,GM,965G
Other cards (except Radeon 9xxx) are mostly not working sad.gif
So i'm preparing release which will contain only Intel cards support...

BUT WAIT! FROM THE AUTHOR OF LEGENDARY NT VESA DRIVER:
Universal VESA/VBE Video Display Driver (for Windows 9x x86 Architecture)(very alpha for now)

Check it out!

Excuse me Tihiy, but I'm still waiting log file from that user.
When I receive it, I send you.

It was too good to be true. sad.gif

I tried those drivers, and now my secondary Windows 95 PC gets stuck in a BSOD loop on boot. I can't get into Safe Mode because of too much RAM. I guess system.ini gets ignored.
Tihiy
Can't you delete vbemp.drv (if i do remember correctly) from dos?
Why do you need drivers when you have Catalyst?
BenoitRen
I didn't know what I could do from DOS to fix things.

I spoke too soon. Next time Windows booted normally, though suddenly Windows would exit when I clicked the Settings tab of the Display Properties. I then tried switching to the NV version, and that works a little better. All colour settings work, except for 16-bits, which looks weird. There is still no hardware acceleration, though; redrawing is slow.

I would use Catalyst if there was a version of it that worked under Windows 95 that also supports my Radeon 9250.

Has anyone tested these with VBE 2.00 PCI 2Mb S3 Inc ViRGE/MX cards? I'm currently running 1024x768x16, but it is capable of 24 bit colors up to 800x600. Problem for me is, after getting used to all that space in 1024x768, I'm not apt to shrink my screen for better colors and less space. Would be very nice to be able to use 24 bit in 1024x768.

isnt that a memory limitation rathen then a driver one

Does this mean there is a chance of getting Win9x to work on the ASUS EEEPC after all?? Huzzah!!!

I've thought of that, except I sometimes use another Windows 98SE machine with a different video card (but the same amount of video memory) that can switch to 1024x768x24. Actually, it can even go as far as 1280x1024x32. So I figure my main machine should be able to also, at least up to 24 bit.

- 1024x768x24 : should need 2.25 MB (therefore, a 4MB card)
- 1280x1024x32: should need 5 MB (therefore, a 8MB card)

It is impossible for a 2MB card to display such resolutions simply because there is not enough VRAM to store all the pixels. You probably misread the VRAM amount on those computers, or the drivers are reporting the wrong values (?).
Tihiy
With custom build of this driver and special patched shadow bios i was finally able to get my native 1280x800 resolution on notebook with 915GM!
And holy crap, it works awesome, i was even able to watch videos. Still no audio, lan or wlan, though, but i'm sure that sometime i'll be able to solve this rolleyes.gif
If author gives me permission, i'll release this version for 915GM, otherwise anyway sometime version with support for non-standard resolutions will come. shifty.gif

Edit: here it is! I hope someone will find it useful! welcome.gif
