How to install Styles XP/.MSStyles Themes

There are 2 methods:
====================
1. Using StyleXP
2. Using a hacked UxTheme.Dll

Using Method 1: (ShareWare)
01. Download StylesXP from: http://www.tgtsoft.com/download.html
Goto NEXT

Using Method 2: (FreeWare) If you follow this method you are at your own, I can't guarantee you won't screw up your system
a. Grab the hacked UxTheme.dll from either location:
1. Neowin's Own Patch

If you have any questions or comments, please contact me, or post your questions in the correct sections of MSFN

If i was to do number 1 would it be 100% sure that it wouldnt bugger me pc up
Aaron
no, it won't bugger your PC up. Some themes also slow your PC down slightly, depending on how graphical it is. It won't affect your internet connection whatsoever.

I recommend the hacked UXTheme dll file for anyone not wanting to buy StylesXP, or not needing such bloated software to change a theme. StylesXP and the hacked UXTheme dll file do very much the same thing to allow themes in WindowsXP.
babis
oh wow.. i totally forgot about this thread ;-)

ya the uxtheme and stylexp basically do the same thing...

when i wrote up the tutorial about installing the file was the only thing that u could screw up... it wasn't that the concept would screw up ur comp... it was that if u didn't follow the instructions correctly... oh well..

Heck TGTsoft has thier own version of uxthemeDLLpatcher available at thier website..
Homer
ok right can you just explain how it works ? smile.gif
Homer
If i use Using Method 1 it will just do it for me yer? and what do i download as you can tell i such a newbie
Aaron
Since you're such a n00b tongue.gif I'd recommend StyleXP.

Using the UXThemePatcher is for experienced guys only who know what they're doing biggrin.gif
Homer

Home -- there are a few sites that you will use to find almost EVERY visual style:
Theme XP -- http://www.themexp.org
Neowin -- http://www.neowin.net/bboard/forumdisplay....p?s=&forumid=36
Deskmod -- http://www.deskmod.com/

These Visual Styles ( or themes) are very cool. I change about every 2 or 3 days - currently rotating between these favorites:
Sosumi
Caution
ChaNinja
Simpli
Milk
PlaqueMod

Enjoy -- LS_Dragons

Homer, I'm going to try and help you once and for all. I'm going to try to make this as simple as possible.

DOWNLOAD THIS FILE

Unzip it, run it, and reboot.

After you reboot you'll see a new theme.

Then, you can go to http://www.themexp.org and download any theme you like. When you download a theme, unzip it to C:\Windows\Resources\Themes\

Now, right-click on your desktop and go to properties. Then change themes as you normally would.

This is as easy as i can possibly make it for you. I hope it helps.
Homer
sorry to p*** u off yes it does

You build themes using Style Builder

You'll need some imaging skills (Photoshop, Paintshop, whatever..). I've never tried, but i'm sure it's not easy.
Homer
i got a theme i like un ziped it to there then went to chage theme and its not there????

so i went to C:\Windows\Resources\Themes\ and thought i would doulbe click on it ans that didnt work. so what shell i do ?
Homer
its weird the way u said i cant do it i found a way to do it so its cool
sedative
Themes should be unzipped to their own sub-directory. For example, if your theme is named "Sedative", then it should be unzipped to C:\Windows\Resources\Themes\Sedative

like this...

the "Windows Visual Style File" is the one you want. You can either double-click on it or change your theme through Display Properties. like this...

I hope this finally clears everything up smile.gif
Aaron
Amen!

Seanie's Show
Hi, if you want to add a new theme to your version of windows without any additional software here's how to do it, I used this methord to install the energy blue MCE 2005 theme (Royale) on XP 64 bit which had a discusting theme:

Create the following folders under the C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes folder: (I just copied Luna and renamed and deleted extra files)

royale
royale\shell
royale\shell\homestead
royale\shell\metallic
royale\shell\normalcolor
royale\shell\royale
royale\wallpaper

Copy the royale.theme file that you extracted into the main C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes folder.

Copy the royale.msstyles file into the \royale subfolder.

Copy the shellstyle.dll file into each of the \shell subfolders (royale\shell\homestead, royale\shell\metallic, royale\shell\normalcolor, royale\shell\royale).

Copy the energybliss.jpg file into the \royale\wallpaper subfolder.

Delete all remaining files, REQUIRED FOR TABLET PC ONLY.

When you select the Display Properties Appearance tab you will see two Windows XP style options listed.

One of the style options includes a Royale color scheme (XP automatically selected this, butr just check); select this scheme then on the theme tab, select the Energy Blue theme.

And there you go!!!
poppie
A easy way to insert a theme to your unattnded is:

Lets say you want the Royale theme:

1. Install the theme on a refference PC (and customize it if you like)

2. Then Copy the theme file from C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes (for royale this will be the "Royale.Theme file") to your \$OEM$\$$\Resources folder.

3. Then Copy the theme folder (for royale this will be "C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Royale" to to your \$OEM$\$$\Resources folder

4. Then add the following lines to the "WINNT.SIF" file:

[Shell]
CustomDefaultThemeFile="%WinDir%\Resources\Themes\Royale.Theme"

Works perfect thumbup.gif

Hi, i have a question, sorry i have put it in other subforum which i think wasnt the suitable one.
Unstead of downloading a patched uxtheme.dll, can i pactch it myself?
i will describe the method which i want to use, and to see if i can do it?
I have downloaded a program: UXTheme Multi-Patcher (Neowin Edition) 4.0., and i want to execute it in a windows already installed, then i copy from: C:\windows\system32\ the archive uxtheme.dll
then i apply the method described in the forum: modifiype uxtheme.dll -c.
makecab uxtheme.dll
Finally copy it and overwrite the uxtheme.dl_ to make an unattended windows.

Thanks
mr4
