While preparing translation I have found that Royale_Big and Royale_small skins use Trebuchet MS font for the title bar which are unavailable on Windows 98.

Yeah, this fix caused icons shift for Opera and other programs.

I have just made some quick tests of Uberskin on Windows ME ... It's working as it should except that certain windows apps are not skinned (notepad, calc, regedit, sndvol32) ... running win98 versions of the same apps on winME is properly skinned.

This also applies to fresh 98SE, and cured by IE6 and SP2. I'm not actually sure which update is triggering this, can you try it with unofficial ME SP? And IE6 of course.

Edit: on a second thought, i've lost it got it: that's prebinded binaries. Updates for user32.dll should fix this.

something strange

if i set Vista or XP theme and some program freeze system will give me an error message that something is wrong (program is not responding) and offers possibility to close it.

without uberskin or with custom maded themes i have not noticed this behaviour... i have no explanation for this, but it occured more than once.

also when playing oblivion i can sometimes notice time bar - for a second when it refreshes each minute.

Minor bug:
While Uberskin installed run Dxdiag and run "DirectDraw" test. when last part in fullscreen will pass the icons in quicklaunch and skinned icons in top panel are broken, until i select another theme.

I believe no one has reported this very minor issue yet ... with uberskin 8.1.12 (W98/WME), when I right click on the start button, the context menu does not appear until I move the mouse a bit ...

Another minor and silly issue. It affects all the MDI applications I've seen, such as the various different Office apps, a hex editor or two, etc.

In full-screen mode, when you minimize a window it will unskin the close/restore/minimize buttons for the parent window. Rolling over the buttons usually corrects the issue. Of course, the minimized windows within the MDI are unskinned, but that's for obvious reasons.

Since you're forcing uberskin to ignore 16bit applications, did you ever concider adding a flag that would reactivate it? Oh, no chance of rounding the bottom corners of windows as well, is there? (can't resist ;*)

Not confirmed. I work in MDI applications mostly and i've never seen that.
Delete uberhack.exe from \windows\system if you want to see crashes and BSODs within skinned 16-bit apps.

Oddly enough, I don't have the 'right-click on start button' issue here. The context menu shows up right away without even blowing a kiss to the mouse.

Well i downloaded the lastest version, i cant use the skin packs , the skin doesn't allowed to me install certain games, i will click next and it doesn't move.

Believe me, that's not the worst problem ever you have. I'm sure you can switch to classic theme and your game will install ok. To uninstall UberSkin, run uberskin.exe and click "No" in dialog.

No, i did click on a classic style and the problem was still there, i can install the game just fine now because i unistall it. My question is, what is up with the skin pack?

I'm going to install the skin pack again, and take a close look at the ini file and see can i change something to fix the problem. If i cant anything in the ini file, well i will just use the normal win98se skins again, which sucks, but oh well.

Why a multi-user in a VM?
Well, I don't have any available physical machines to run Windows 98SE on...
And as for the multi-user, I beleive I already mentioned that I'm working on a pack to set up options for user file/setting access rights on Win 9x... and I kind of need a multi-user set up to test it...

Well i give up, looks like i have to choose between not being able to play some of my games or new skins, and my games comes first haha.
Maybe the problem will be fixed with a update or RP8, until then, back to the old style of skins.

few months ago some Vista user reported that he cannot use one program because of Vista Skinning. I tried same program with uberskin and result was completely same.

Some apps are vulnerable to nonstandard skinning engines and it is not caused by skinning, but it is in app.

Nice work Tihiy! I've been testing for a while uberskin and i must say it runs smoooooooothly on my win98se system..... BlackMesa skin it's a blast, it looks like it was designed specialy for win98se. I have no errors or bugs to report.....because i didn't have any!!!!

Oh well.. I've been playing around with the Royale theme in the previous versions of UberSkin and created a series of 8 color variations of it. They are all set to use Central European fonts (Microsoft Sans Serif and Tahoma) so the series is called Royale CE. Obviously intended for localized Windows versions whose primary fonts are CE encoded.

As I got caught with bigger problems, this series has remained somehow unfinished: start button is the same for all versions, groupbox color may not be very visible on all themes, selected item color may not match the theme, etc. However, as I don't have much spare time to fix it now, I thought I should offer it to the public, hopefully someone here with more spare time and a better eye would retouch where needed.

Sorry to say, but one regression from 8.1.12 to 8.2.0: hidden taskbar will not show up on hovering the start button anymore. So now there's 4 places that won't trigger taskbar display:
- start button
- open application taskbar buttons
- expander arrows (for both QuickLaunch and custom toolbars)
- custom toolbars name space

Yep, that's intended. I've decided to remove it since it causes troubles, and you still can bring start menu by pressing that small part or from keyboard. I'll tweak these matters latter.

It's not that much about the start menu itself as I rarely use it; it's about being able to display the hidden taskbar without searching for an 'active spot'. Given the current conditions, when there's many open applications, only the QuickLaunch and the Systray areas are able to bring the taskbar up, while I'm used to point directly to the taskbar button of the application I want to bring to front (I can peek at the buttons through the visible 2 px line remainder of the hidden taskbar).

I might have to roll back to 8.1.12 as there was no context-menu issue for me in that version and I never use that menu anyway.

An oddity when making skins: taskbar button skins will not be used if the taskbar itself is not skinned. Probably intentional though.

Oh, here's a weird glitch. After you click a help caption button, making your cursor into the help cursor, clicking or holding the caption bar (like when you move the window) will remove the skinning from the caption buttons. Release and the skin is reapplied. Seems to happen to any app. It isn't really worth fixing, concidering.

There's another issue I forgot to mention, that's been happening in older versions too: some checkboxes in certain applications are misplaced. For example, in FastStone Image Viewer, when saving a picture under JPG format, the skinned checkboxes for Optimal Huffman and Progressive appear on top of the text of the control while the original, working ones are still unskinned in their normal place (see screenshot).

A contest where all better themes could be included in it.

I'd settle for a fixed, easily accessible repository for all current and future themes, so anybody could choose their themes at will. With screenshots/thumbnails, preferrably.
Then, one default theme built into Uberskin should be enough. A link in the Appearance panel would send the user to the themes repository.

Yes that is true. The project was made on my win98se english version. I don't thinc it works on first edition.

Don't ever try Renovatio, this will void your warranty, as well as RP7.

I like idea with skins repository, but i don't have powers to organize it. I'll add "stock" skins if they're highly awesome and appreciated (KDE/Gnome styles, any1?).

A skins repository I was playing around with as an idea for the last month or so since I've been away from home. Been thinking of building an Uber-'skin' gallery using php for a while but haven't had the initial drive to do so.

I could get together a framework for it this week if it's desired and see how that goes.
