UberSkin 8.2.1 Release
http://tihiy.ahanix.org/uberskin.exe
- Fixed checkbox skinning bugs;
- Fixed wrong windows behavior on double-click (ex. FlashGet);
- Improved taskbar un-autohide (start button, task buttons);
+ English, Russian, Czech, Polish, Slovak, French languages;
+ Documentation renewed (yay!): http://tihiy.ahanix.org/uber/

Problem (small) with automatic detection czech languages... with run this exe (and uberinst.exe or shl8.dll) view english. Why?
(System Windows98 SE with CZ nSP 2.1, KernelEx 3.2a). Other multilanguage setup aplications (e.g. DVDFab) runs automatic czech.

What would it take to ask permission? AFAIK, the projects at MSFN are neither commercial nor for monetary gain so unless StudioTwentyEight is aiming at such monetary gain, they might as well approve porting the theme to UberSkin.

Or am I wrong? unsure.gif Either way, it wouldn't hurt asking...

I gave this a try and man, it's good! The new task bar looked great! One thing though, my icons didn't change from it's Win98SE format. Was it meant to be this way? Or was there something I should done before, during or after the installation? All I did was click on the installer, rebooted the PC as instructed, then browsed in the "themes" section in the Display Properties and that's it.

Uberskin doesn't change the icons....yet. I use Desktop Architect as a theme manager to change the default Win9x icons.

Tihiy said that he will be adding 32bit icons to Uberskin, we'll just have to wait until he's done. (Hopefully soon!)

I'm pleased to report that RP8 IS WORKING with Windows 95 osr2.1 ..... My test bed setup was Win95 osr2.1 with updated user32.dll-1387. IE5.5 is installed.

Just fell into a win95 machine (more like tripped over it at the curb) and can confirm that the updated user32.dll is what makes it possible to use uberskin. Previous versions of the shell are missing resources.
All the dependencies lie in User32.dll. My stock OSR2 lists its version as 4.0.0.950, and it is missing these dependencies:
NotifyWinEvent
SetWinEventHook
GetComboBoxInfo
GetScrollBarInfo
GetTitleBarInfo
GetWindowInfo
TrackMouseEvent
DrawMenuBarTemp

Incidentally, where would you find the shell update at? I've tried looking around on google, but to no avail. Sadness...
AbyssHunted
Well, finally tried out the latest UberSkin. (My Virtual Hard Disk file got corrupted and I only just got around to restoring it from a backup)

I must say, it seems quite stable after some testing of various apps.
(Still no working multi-user, but that hasn't been added yet anyways and I'm probably one of the few people to actually use it)
Tihiy
Oh, believe or not, i've implemented multi-user support some time ago in my builds.
However, i'm not going to release them until all promised things will be ready. welcome.gif

Tihiy, now that I got here, I'd like to ask for your help in this matter that's been killing me for a while already and made me stall the WLL work: BSOD on startup. sad.gif

I'm not sure of anything, but I suspect it may be related to Uberskin somehow. Started sometime around me installing one of the latest builds, but my memory is extremely bad so don't take my word for this.

Anyway, here's the deal - the visible startup sequence (Bootlog is disabled and I just remembered about it) is:
- logo screen
- blank screen (during network initialization, I presume)
- desktop wallpaper
- taskbar (Uberskin 8.1.12 installed)
- desktop icons briefly appear and then dissapear
- nVidia driver custom settings get into effect (second monitor hue correction visible)
- desktop icons (again, for good) + monitor 1 bottom custom toolbar
- monitor 1 left custom toolbar + monitor 2 bottom custom toolbar + traffic meter + DSClock

Thing is, many times the startup sequence halts somewhere around taskbar appearance with a BSOD stating Fatal exception 06 at address 0028:FF116CBD. No other useful information whatsoever. This is why I thought it might have something to do with Uberskin, since I didn't modify anything lately regarding explorer.exe or video drivers.

Anyway, I just enabled bootlog and will look into it when this happens again (usually at the very first cold start) but in the meantime if you could offer any advice, I'd be glad to follow. Thank you and sorry for adding to your troubles. blushing.gif

After install UberSkin on w2000 properly functions - but after restart Windows isn't functional ... shade. Tihiy - why?
Lunac
Yeah, something like UberSkin for Windows 2000 would be great, and I mean just for the start/taskbar area. Apps like TrueTransparency already do a good job of Aero emulation/replication on Windows 2000.
Drugwash
TClock3 can be used on Win2k for taskbar/start menu skinning.

The upcoming RP8/UberSkin is able to replace system icons in almost every place...

Without:
- System file replacing AT ALL;
- Manual file reshacking;
- Registry editing;
- Rebooting, of course!

You'll be able to change all icons with a mouse click or author a icon theme which does not bring registry or system file problems.
Do want [y/n]?

Sounds very good tihiy, would save loads of effort when fine-tuning a theme to perfection all the while making the skinning solution much more flexible. smile.gif

Windows 98/ME 32-bit icons Prerequisite Update
http://tihiy.ahanix.org/Win9x_RP8_Update.EXE

What is it?
This update is intended to be installed under 98 (any version) or ME (any version) in order to fix DIB engine bugs that are preventing 32-bit icon code from functioning normally.
IT IS NOT TESTED UNDER WINDOWS 95.
32-bit icon code will NOT be supported under Windows 95 [or with Windows 95 shell - so far].

Do i need it?
You'll need it if you're going to use 32-bit icons provided by RP8/UberSkin.
You can install it even if you won't. It does not change Windows functionality.

Does it interfere with other updates?
No. It does not interfere with other updates.
If you're installing 98SE2ME, you'll need to re-apply it, since it does not check file version information.
ATTENTION: This update DESTROYS RP7 32-bit icon functionality. This is intended, because RP7 must be destroyed when installing RP8.
[Remember that RP8 is not available now!]

Which Windows language version is suitable?
Any. It is language neutral / multi-lingual.

How to remove it?
This update is not intended to be uninstalled.
You can ask author to commit harakiri if you manage to screw your system with it.

Install it now if you want - prepare your system for RP8 (and yeah - it won't come soon). And don't reboot - don't waste your time.

Hello,

please, can you make UberSkin for Windows 2000 ?

And one problem - I tried it on 2000, rebooted computer, and these skins doesn't worked. Yeah, I know, I don't had to install it on 2000 ... but I tried it, and I can't delete it. I deleted it from HD (folder Resources in system directory), rebooted computer, but skins are still there. How to delete it? no.gif

If you don't will make it for 2000, it's ok. But, how to erase it from 2000 ?

Thanks, and sorry for my English.
Zoinkity
Since you're hacking the DIB enigine anyway, is there any chance of adding in the bitmap flipping trick found in later windows? They flip the image when the width/height are a negative value. Obviously, in everything ME and prior width and height are read as unsigned values.

What skins? Those from Resources folder? Or the ones from the registry? Those from Resources folder you can just delete them, and those from registry you must delete them from [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Appearance\Schemes] here you delete the skins entryes that appears in dispay propertyes. The files from uberskin are:
-rp8.dll, rp816.dll, shl8.dll, uberhack.exe, uberskin.dll
This files are in system32, but you will see that all this files will have the extension like this: rp8.rp8 etc.
And finaly you will have to remove this:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\MPRServices\RP8]
"DLLName"="rp8.dll"
"EntryPoint"="InitAsync"
"StackSize"=dword:00002000

Hint:

If you see the values off the win2000 schemes you will see that all off them begin with 02 and the ones from uberskin begin with 04. After i moded a few lines of one uberskin theme i got this:

After clicking OK:

HI,

I don't know if it's already been said (I'm a lazy guy who didn't want to read the whole thread whistling.gif ) but:
Überskin seems to be missing the disabled and checked checkbox. Those are frequently used in Programs to display an unchangeable state. But when running Uberskin they are just disabled, but not checked.

Just thought I'd report...

Great software though.

Cheers,

Windows 98/ME 32-bit icons Prerequisite Update
It seems that my 98SE can't have 32-bit icons. After installing the RP7, I always turn off this option in RPConfig so that the icons look better. It took me nearly two hours to restore the toolbar icons to the original ones. I don't like this update for the RP8 at all, and hope it isn't compulsory as you said. I have a question, Tihiy. Do I really need to have this update to use RP8?

PS. Please note that I ask you only once!

Too bad, I've already done it, and lost much time with it.

And too late, have to leave now. Just one more question, Tihiy. When will you release RP8? No need to give an answer if you don't have one!
Chozo4
RP8 won't be released anytime in the near future (only timeline we have at this point).

As for 'uninstalling' the RP8 pre-requisite for RP8 preperations, you simply need to restore the comdlg32.dll file from the RP7.11 install.

I modified the RP8 pre-requisite installer with the original RP7.11 'comdlg32.dll' to restore RP7 32-bit icons capability in case another boo-boo like this occurs. Simply unpack and right-click->install the inf inside. If asked for the file locations, simply point it to the folder you just unpacked it to.

http://asakura.t35.com/archive/Win9x_RP8_Update_revert.rar (Use ONLY if running RP7 and installed the RP8 updates)

The rp8 prerequisite updates aren't neccessary (yet). They are simply bits to install if you feel you want to 'prepare' or get your system ready for installing RP8 once it is released. They are intended for those running UberSKIN and not RP7 since RP7 has specific changes which are not compatible with uberskin and the RP8 preperations and vice versa.

Later on during RP8 work, there will likely be another release of UberSkin which will use this RP8 preperation to supply 32-bit icon support. We saw such a trend with LameSKIN just prior to UberSKIN's release whereas lameskin updates were provided with new changes being used in uberskin.
Drugwash
If I may throw my ¢2 in, I'd strongly opt in for a patcher rather than pre-patched files. Besides the ability of in-place patching of any language version of the target file(s), it should also act as an unpatcher, restoring the original in case anything bad occurs. Something like the WLL Installer I've created (not bragging, just having it at hand as a working example).

The biggest problem with pre-patched files is that anytime an (un)official update kicks in, the patched file would be replaced and the users could find themselves in the position of not being able to restore the system to its working state, having to ask/wait for Tihiy to patch that specific version(s) of the file(s).

This is a widespread issue around, with most/all the unofficial packages that come with pre-patched files.
