This Christmas, I gave myself a gift of a new-to-me computer. It had Windows XP preloaded on it. I really like it. Don't get me wrong, Windows 98 rocks, especially with the visual enhancements available from this site! It's just that I've got so many more options as far as supported programs now! So, I feel a bit sad to be leaving all my Windows 98 SE forums behind, this one being one of the better ones. I'm on to new horizons now. I'll still be checking back to see screenshots of RP8 when it comes out though!

Daniel-J, you have a few more choices for virtual machine host software on WinXP. I'd recommend moving your Win98 setup over to a virtual machine on WinXP. Maybe someone else can recommend the simplest way to do this (I haven't quite tried it yet as I still have a dedicated Win98 machine). You just never know when you'll find an old application/game/etc that doesn't work well on WinXP.

MS Virtual PC works well, and it's free:

MSVPC

You can run your favorite Win98 on top of WinXP

i was never willing to move to XP. not before, and now when it selling is going to end i have more reasons why i will not do that. After 2003 there were first programs for Xp only, but only few and todays after KernelEx there is less apps which i cannot run here.

Microsoft is the organisation which rules the market. In few years there will be Vista Only apps, or 64bit apps which were not be able to run at XP.

Therefore i would rather stay with Win98SE, update it, maintain it to run more apps on it, just because its compatibility potential for all Win32bit and of course Dos applications.

Well you don't have to make the jump directly to XP - you could try 2K, it would be a less shocking transition

I am new to this forum and was surprised to see people are still using 98, that bold! (and I thought I was bold by still using 2K!)

I like 98, I was able to tweak it to use only 15 MB RAM on a project computer (MAME computer). But I couldn't imagine using it on a modern computer (3GHZ, 1GB, 700GB RAID 0, ect).

What do you guys use to make 98 work well with modern hardware? And how does it bench compared to 2K / XP ?

Win98 does NOT work well with newer hardware. There's no PCIe, dual-core or 64bit in Win98.
About benchmarks - I have the impression that Win98 is a bit slower.

There is PCI-E. A different problem is that new video adapters no longer work on Win98.
