NICE!!!That's what 98se needs to compete in 2008.Running Renovatio on two systems great with 98se in 256colors on 1024x768(chempc/desktop)+(gateway/ev500monitor) added to compliment color schemes);and 98se-rp7-renovatio in 16medium-bit/true color on 800x600(optiquest):some issues with rp7 just haveta keep tinkering with settings .......reboots with bootsafe.exe for accurate restarts...can't wait to try it!!!!.....thydreamwalker

I'm not a big fan of this kind of stuff but I've got to say your sidebar looks great!
The backgroud gradient could be more Vista toolbar-like but that's just my opinion.

Hey, very nice to hear that you're working on a "native" W98 sidebar! I'm using the Active Desktop based "Longhorn Sidebar" (4.0) at the moment (the one in the screenshot):



but that Longhorn Sidebar is somehow just an ugly hack since it runs on Active Desktop and Flash. Would be great to have a native Sidebar...keep us posted about your progress :-D

It's already better than this Active Desktop based sidebar I've been using so far. Would be really cool, if you develop this further - in the ReadMe file you already mentioned that the next version might support skins - that would be dämn cool!!

I like your RSidebar but you could put search too,
the effect Transparent post for download too.

In the first of all it's a very lite version for now of this application....(for sure it will have a lot of tools=gadgets in the next versions)...and in the second what are you saying about "the effect Transparent post for download too"??

The icons on your desktop look very nice. I also have RP7 but my desktop doesn't look as interesting as yours. Since I installed RP7, I've had to change the screen area from 1024x768 to 800x600 so that I can read the text on the desktop easily. But yours is 640x480, isn't it? So, does it mean that the smaller the screen is, the better it looks like? And do you need to install any more icon packs?

Your sidebar looks good but it is something I don't like to have on Win 98! Sorry for my rude words. I mean I like to have Win 98 as simple as possible, and I keep the desktop as clean as I can. By the way, thanks for making some nice themes for Lameskin, Xstyle. RedVista is one of my favourites.

My screen resolution is 800x600 not 640*480(what screenshots??). What icon packs are u talcking about? In this moment i have my win98 as clean as possible(no packs installed)..... I understand if u like your desktop as clean as you can...

This might be a bit off topic, but I can't help but noticing that you have Vista-like transparent windows.
HOW did you get those under Win9x?

i dont think those are transparent i think it is a bmp that looks like the wallpaper

Yes, i know about that....that's because the Sidebar uses those files(those files are included in the program code). This first version of the sidebar uses those files beacause i'm still learning how to make a slide in the image area, shrinking your wallpapers from your pictures folder (or another folder). So....still learning!


Working on plugins for the sidebar( i found something very interesting...so i'll be reading this days ). Plugins for sidebar....yeah!!!.

Renovatio worked perfect for me after rp7.... If somethings happens you can put the blame on me. Renovatio v0.2 will be a lot better...... (if i have time..... ).

As awergh already noticed: I'm just using a "Vista" theme in my browser, so it's not transparent. Would be cool though


I installed RP7 on top of Renovatio, because I haven't got an English W98, but as you know, Renovatio changes a lot of stuff into English, which causes problems. For example the %apppath% directory changes and the Start Menu changes as well. So I installed RP7 again on top, because it changes my system back to my language.

I kept the Explorer toolbars from Renovatio, because they look better, IMO. And some icons are kept as well, which is cool. But I'd love to see a localized (in my case german) version of Renovatio. I would translate/convert it myself, if I just knew how...

BTW: There's one problem after I installed Renovatio... the explorer always freezes for a few seconds after I open it for the first time. The same goes for programs that make use of the explorer (for example during a "save as..." dialogue). Does anyone know the reason for that, or maybe even how to fix it?

Xstyle, I've installed your Renovatio and see that the icons are improved so much. It's very good. The file THUMBVW.dll from RP7 works better for me so I keep it. Well, if you said so...

- First, when I turn on my computer, an error message will pop up. It doesn't happen if I restart Windows or log off. In the box of details, it says:
I always feel dizzy when I look at such codes! I know nothing about them. Please tell me how to get rid of this error.

- Second, the Taskbar can't auto hide although I choose this option from its properties. And it keeps flickering, on and on! I don't like this at all. How can I fix it? Don't you have this problem?

- Third, not very serious, what is the line Renovatio (under Windows Update) on the start panel for? When I click on it, nothing happens. If it has no use, how can I remove it?

Without these annoying things your Renovatio is just fine for me. And this is my own suggestion for your coming Renovatio 0.2, Xstyle. Please give me a chance to safely uninstall your project if suddenly I decide not to have it on my computer any more! Thanks in advance for your reply.

I can't say what happened with that error.....with the taskbar i had the same issue(???). The renovatio line will be activated with the second version.
I will improve my project more and i'll try to keep it as simple as possible(as natural as i can).

The error message (RUNDLL32) doesn't happen any more. I wish I could know why. I feel at ease to know you also have the taskbar issue! About the third thing, as I said it was not serious, then just forget it. By the way, your Rsidebar looks pretty nice. Are you afraid if I intend to try it?

Sorry, because the more I read your explanation, the more I am confused! When I searched for Explorer.exe on drive C, I had two files. They have the same version (5.50.4134.100) but different sizes. The Explorer.exe in C:\WINDOWS\revbckup is 396 KB. I think it is from RP7. The other in C:\WINDOWS is 732 KB, it is from the Renovatio, right? And you suggested me to copy the one from RP7 into C:\WINDOWS, overwriting the Explorer.exe from the Renovatio, didn't you? It doesn't allow me to do so, saying "The specified file is being used by Windows." And if it allowed, would I lose all the nice icons from the Renovatio? I don't install Kernel 0.3.2.a on my computer.

PS. I'm afraid you will be confused with my words as I was with yours! I don't know how to express this clearly.

Here is my advice: make a backup to both of the files and then start in ms-dos mode and delete one of the explorer. After that the system will recognize the only explorer u have left in the windows dir.

My explorer.exe is larger because i changed all the icons inside it(90icons). The RP7 explorer has 64 icons...so that's why it's larger.

I reinstalled RP7 and then tried to replace as many files from your Renovatio as possible. With some files, Shell32.dll for example, I had to do from Dos. I have never done this before so it took me over 3 hours and I had to restart Windows around 10 times! I have almost every icons I like now. And the most important thing is that the Taskbar can auto hide. I keep Explorer.exe (as Thydreamwalker suggested in post #34) and THUMBVW.dll from RP7 because it works better for me. Your Shell32.dll is also much bigger than that from RP7. I notice there are two Open Folder icons in Shell32.dll, instead of one Open and one Closed Folder icon. I have to use Iconpackager to fix this.

I'm quite pleased with my Win 98 now, Xstyle.

I have downloaded your sidebar and will try it later. Just one more question, can it be uninstalled, in case I change my mind? Thanks in advance for your answer because I won't post a reply after this. I don't want to spam your thread any more! By the way, I also have the same watermelon picture as you.

Never mind, Thydreamwalker. I prefer the Explorer.exe from RP7 to the one from Renovatio. So, thank you for your advice in post #34.

This side bar of yours is a fantastic addition to windows 98! I was secretly longing for just such a glory to manifest itself.

For the record, for those who are not privy to nostalgic tid-bits (some people thinking that the side bar concept with the clock on top etc. is new to Vista)—a side bar in that basic form, but quite primitive in appearance, was available even to windows 3.11 users!

You are talking about the RSidebar? Because if you are, the RSidebar doesn't install, it's a standalone program...so you can delete it if you don't want the program anymore.

Hey Xstyle I tried your sidebar yesterday for just a few before I sacked out and it works great, I really appreciate it so don't get me wrong, but a few questions that you may have already spoke to (so sorry). So, do the slideshow files have to be bmps, All my pics are jpgs, I'm not sure?? Also, am I understanding that you can't drag mp3s into the box, you have to do the path dialog? Will it have drag and drop capabilities?

You pointed exactly the features that i'm working on(without the analog clock and the automatic next track selection). The slideshow it's a little tricky for me right now.......but it will be better in the next version(with the possibility to change the wallpaper with one click on it. Drag and drop will be available for mp3's.

When I install I get 'Audio initialization failed' and if I try to play an mp3 I get 'error loading file' ... Since nobody else has reported this I presume it's a problem at my end...but have you any idea what it might be?

Perhaps using gdiplus would make things easier?
