Will I be able to strip vista down after I have slipstreamed it? Or wont it work then? Else I will try to download some iso somewhere (Use my own cdkey ofc) and strip that one down, just hard to find a iso in the right language where my own cdkey works

First slipstream and then you can vlite your iso but never remove components with the slipstream process. you have to do it in 2 steps

Thanks man, this is a great tutorial, all I had to do was follow the exact steps and now I've got my own Vista with SP1.

for some strange reason, vLite will NOT install the WIM dll files. Although I put them in there, it is not working.

I put the x86 dll in the vlite\wimfltr\x86 folder and the 64bit dll in its \vLite\wimfltr\x64 folder

I ALSO put the 32bit dll into the vlite folder. Just nothing works. It keeps saying "Put the WIM filter installation files in the 'c:\program files\vlite\wimfltr\x86' then press OK"...the problem is, they are there and when I press OK, it just says the same thing. I get nowhere. What on earth is wrong?

Actually fact is that wimfltr.sys has been removed from vLite.....so you have to manually install......

Download: WIMFlTR (Windows Imaging Files)
Right click on INF and click on Install ....the copy wimgapi.dll at the root of vLite installation folder.

One point of clarification...

My understanding is that SP1 installation is heavily dependent on all prior hotfixes having been installed. The instructions though don't mention the need to incorporate any hotfixes into the ISO (in fact they specifically state NOT to enable components, etc.). Do I understand correctly that with slipstreaming ONLY the initial Vista installation files and SP1 are needed and the hotfixes can be ignored? (In case it matters, I'm installing Vista Business.)

One additional question... assuming that the answer to the above question is yes, then is it also correct to assume that once I have this slipstreamed SP1 version installed that Vista will recognize that the 50+ hotfixes are not needed, or might auto-update then still prompt me to install them?

No need to integrate pre-Vista SP1 updates, Service Pack is cumulative update and covers all last updates.
and Vista doesn't prompt to install pre-Vista SP1 update after installation.

It mean, First slipstream SP1 and finish the all process, then re-open Vista Installation source (Vista SP1 Slipstreamed) and customize your Vista.

my vista disc has english and russian 32 and 64 bit, how can i get out the russian and keep the english?

I followed each step above but when iso got created it was exactly the same as the Vista SP0. Only dates certain folders changed but files inside folders were all the same as the Vista RTM. I wasted three dvds and about 7 hours of my time. I didn't get any errors either during the process. Has anyone use this successfully? Any help will be appreciated.

I really want to make this happen. so far it's been frustrating. the advice given has not lead to success. I've written a detailed step-by-step guide (btw I'm using an x64 platform but that should work the same, isn't it?). So I've got 2 questions:

1. Is my guide correct?

1 - I only want Vista Ultimate on my ISO, so as I have read, you just slipstream SP1 to it then click apply. After I have done this, can I then remove components, or can I remove them before I hit apply?

2 - After I did the slipstream, I went to the intergration>hotfixes section and this is all I get


now is it suppose to have to listings for SP1 and is there normally only 6 hotfixes listed?

I've few questions regarding vLite.
1- Could you confirm that the steps below are the right one to integrate SP1 to all the version of Vista in my DVD.
a- start vLite
b- point vLite to the folder containing Vista
c- select the Vista version to slipstream
d- point vLite towards the Service Pack 1 file
e- close vlite
f- repeat the above procedure for all the versions of Vista.

2- After adding SP1 to all the Vista(s), my iso is 3.2gb instead of 2.5gb
Is this size OK? or should it be bigger?

3- I want now to remove whatever I don't need but to all the Vista(s) (all version).
How do I proceed?
Are the below steps the correct ones to follow?

I'm having problems running Components and Tweaks on the pre-SP1'd Vista Ultimate x64 iso. (I am doing the "two step" thing referred to in previous posts.)
The iso installs fine by itself, but if I remove things in Components/Tweaks I get the following error at the start of the install process;


Then installation terminates and the pc restarts.
Only things related to languages I've removed are a number of foreign languages under Components\Languages. The regional information under Unattended is all set to English UK/US. The original DVD iso has hotfixes installed as far as early September, but no components/tweaks.

There seems to be a lack of consensus; some posts say tweaking is possible, others not.
Any help people can provide would be appreciated.

just want to know, is the vista (without SP1) serial still working after the slipstream? or isit like winxp?

Let me see if I understood this correctly (and I hope someone answers while I do this) ...

1. Start vLite.
2. Point to your existing DVD (if .iso mounted on virtual DVD-player or your DVD-ROM station)
3. Files will be copied to HDD to a place of your spesification (like F:\Vista for instance)
4. Go "NEXT"
5. Choose what version you would like to work on, and select ONLY to slipstream (not even bootable dvd if you want to do all?)
5. After slipstreaming .. Go back, select next version ... slipstream that, and so forth.
6. Finalize by hitting apply and even do "bootable iso"?

OR ... I'm I supose to create a new iso for every time? and maybe even apply?

I find it fascinating how a DVD of about 2.something GB gets to almost 5 ... just by adding SP1. XP never grew more than 30-40 MB for each SP, making it from about 380 to 600 from Gold til SP3.

The tutorial is great but I still have a couple of questions ( unfortunately my original post got no reply ) so I ask that you excuse this as its a bit of a cross post.

I am very new to this having only ever slipstreamed XP by hand and do have a couple of questions intermixed with the description of my understanding of what vLite is doing below.

My understanding of whats happening with vLite is as follows.
vLite asks for the location of the original DVD disk for Vista and a working folder to put it in, which we provide, it then copies the files from the original DVD to the folder we specified,
when done it asks us to specify the location of the service pack after which it begins extracting the service pack over the files that copied from DVD. My DVD only has Ultimate x64 on it,
it states this on the top ( OEM System Builder Pack ). Thus I presume I'll only be rebuilding the one edition as I don't have any others.

The next step appears to be integration and here is where my understanding falls down .

Questions.
When I look at the list where KB's would be there are actually KB's listed but grayed out ( i know these can be un-grayed by ticking a box )
Are these KB's the ones that vLite has detected on my current install over and above the service pack? I.E the Vista Install I am running vLite from to create the image
OR KB's that absolutely everyone needs over and above service pack 1?
OR KB's that were included within SP1? (this doesn't make much sense but i suppose its possible)

If the KB's are the default ones that everyone should have and there are obviously many patches and hot-fixes since SP1 can I grab those somehow from my existing installed vista and put them into vLite?

If so how?

Sorry for so many questions but I like to understand fully what I am doing before I do it.... less messy that way.

How to execute some command after vista installation on first boot? It was command in nLite for that, but I don't know how to make autoexecute some command after 1st boot in vLite?

i would like to have little infos to do the perfect copy of Vista Lite with SP1.

1 - i understand that is basical to do SLipstream of SP1 before doin any operation (add or remove) on the desired version of VIsta

2 - then when i have my version of Vista with its SP1 integrated is possible to add driver and remove some parts like languages , Speech , Tablet PC to reduce more iso amount??If yes , i must simply use the new Vista VLite versione and "re-arrange" it...isn't it??

Hi, just a quick question. How i can uninstall the Windows Imaging driver? I used the one neo provided in the rapidshare link.

I found the wimfltr.sys in the windows/system32/drivers folder, should i delete that and also the entry in autoruns?

I have trying this;

(The copy of my Vista dvd all versions is on my computer)

1. Open vLite - Selecting on the frontpage the dvd copy.

2. Selecting the tasks - I choose to tick Integration, Tweaks, Bootable Iso -> Enable before apply.

3. Enable Hotfix and Language.

4. Leave Tweaks as default.

5. Make ISO.

6. Restart vLite.

7. Same again just with another version until I'm finished with them all.

8. Apply (Save)
(Not Rebuild All or One)

Then it should work right?

Heya folks, I have done the slipstream of SP1 and tested it (working great! thanks!) I decided to go back and install every hotfix / extras I could get my hands on, as well as some drivers. The image ended up being 5.7gb but I have dual layer disks so that shouldnt be a problem right? It should still work just as well over the 4gb warning level burned to a DL disk?

Use UDF file system for DVD..it allows to burn DVD w/ more than 4 Gb file size.

That simply just refers to applying the change, right? It isn't literal? As in apply the change AND install it on your current host OS?

I had the same problem. Turned out it was my Avast! Anti-Virus program. I switched to COMODO and no more problems. BUT if you want to work with 64-bit Vista you have to do it in 64-bit XP or Vista.

Does anyone know if making a vLite version of Vista WITHOUT slep streaming SP1 would be the cause of a missing hall.dll error at the end//restart of an installation?

More specifically, a Dell OEM Vista.

First off.... been using nLite for ages now and I think it's a fantastic product....hats off to everyone involved in the development of this and of course vLite.

Am trying to use VLite for the first time. I understand that to integrate SP1 and component alteration then this is a two-step process, so initially all I am doing is attempting the integration if SP1 to my Vista (Home Premium).

I used the WAIK front end to copy the Vista DVD to a folder (and then manually copying the wimgapi.dll to the root of VLite).

I ran vLite and selected Slipstream option and pointed the file Select to my SP1 downloaded file: Windows6.0-KB936330-X86-wave1

It starts the integration but then appears to hang at about 25% Integrating. It has hung at this point for the last 24 hours and am not sure if it is still doing something or indeed has hung. The PkgMgr.exe Process in Task Manager is still running at 50%. I have a fairly high spec machine and wouldn't have though it would take this long.

Can anyone let me know indicative times for this initial process; or does it look like it has indeed crashed? (And if so, what's the fix?!)

I've been using nLite for years and have begun using vLite. I have successfully slipstreamed SP1 into every Vista edition and was wondering whether anybody has a workaround to get SP2 to slipstream...

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, you cannot slipstream SP2 with the current version of vlite.

The only way to slipstream SP2 is to do a reverse integration, here is the weblink which describes how to do this.

1. Install Vista SP1 to a secondary partition (not the main boot partition). The primary reason for this is one doesn't want all the boot associated files of that computer related to BCD and boot.ini being part of the final image.

2. Once in the Out of Box Experience (OOBE) after setup, type Ctrl-Shift-F3 to enter Audit mode. In case you're wondering what/where OOBE is, it is the part after setup where the user is setting up his/her username, password etc.

3. The system will then reboot into Audit mode and a Sysprep window will pop up. Do not close the Sysprep window.

4. Run the Vista SP2 standalone installer and let it do its thing.

5. After the SP2 setup is complete, you'll find yourself back at the main Vista desktop with the Sysprep window open and SP2 will be installed and ready to go. (Optional/Recommended): Microsoft has included a tool with SP2 called compcln.exe which can be used to remove older versions of components that have been upgraded to new versions in SP2 to save space. Once SP2 is installed, simply run compcln.exe via Winkey+R (Run command) or via the command prompt). Afterwards, from the Sysprep selection window, select OOBE, Generalize, and to Shut Down the system.

6. Boot the system into another OS install (ie. XP), do NOT boot back into the new Vista SP2 install, and run the following imagex command (imagex can be found in WAIK):-

imagex /compress maximum /flags "Ultimate" /capture d: c:\install.wim "Windows Vista Ultimate"

where d: is the drive Vista is installed on and c:\install.wim is the location to store the new install.wim. Replace "Ultimate" with whatever edition of Vista you installed and replace the drive letters (d: and c:\install.wim) with your own.

Also note that the "Ultimate" specified after /flags should be replaced with one of the following if another version of Vista is being captured:

HomeBasic
HomePremium
Business
Ultimate

7. Once the image has been built, replace the old install.wim in the Vista SP1 in \Sources\ with the newly created install.wim and then build a bootable ISO image with any burning software that you use.

It has to be noted that the above method is for a single edition of Vista. If one wanted to integrate SP2 into all the editions of Vista, you would have to follow Steps 1-5 for each edition and use the imagex /append function to build an install.wim that contains all the editions of Vista.

I get an error when I try to do this task. My vLite 1.2 stops working. I have Vista 64bit Ultimate release (no sp) on DVD and have copied it to my hard drive. I have installed vLite 1.2 to my computer. I have downloaded SP1 to my computer. When I go thru the steps mentioned here, the process starts, looks like it gets about 10% done, then craps out. The message says, "Preparing..." (for about 2 minutes), then the green bar gets to about 10%, when I get a dialog saying "vLite has stopped working. A problem caused the progrram to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

I have removed vLite 1.2, and reinstalled using a fresh download from a different mirror. I have tried from a different computer, with the same results, but at a later stage in the building process.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

I would suggest you use vlite version 1.1.6 as version 1.2 is kinda of buggy for some reason. If you haven't got it, just google it and you should be able download it from other websites.
