UNOFFICIAL SERVICE PACK PLUS 4.2S - CORRECT LINK.

CORRECT LINK:

http://www.softmania.pl/program-1252-nieof...ws_98_se.html#m

HOW TO INSTALL?

1.UNPACK AND RUN:
2. FIXID.REG
3. SP.BAT

SERVICE PACK 4.2D REQUIRES ONE OF INSTALLED UNOFFICIAL SERVICE PACK VERSION PREVIOUSLY & ORIGINAL IE5 FROM WIN98 SE OPERATING SYSTEM. YOU SHOULD INSTALL SP4.2D BEFORE INSTALLING IE6. IF YOU WILL INSTALL THIS SP ON IE6, YOUR SYSTEM WILL CRASH. OF COURSE, YOU CAN INSTALL IE6 BUT LATER. EVEN IF YOU WILL INSTALL IE6 LATER, YOU MUST KNOW, THAT YOUR SYSTEM WILL DECREASE A PERFORMANCE. REASON:
SOME FILES IN A THIS VERSION NLITE, WHAT WE ARE CUTTED, ARE SHARED WITH INTERNET EXPLORER FILES. SO WHEN YOU WILL INSTALL IE6, THEN THERE FILES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN BY FILES, WHICH ARE NOT NLITE FILES. WE STRONGLY RECOMENDED TO USE AN OPERA. 2.27 IS GOOD, 9.50 HAS AN ERRORS AND EATS RAM IMMEDIATELY. IN A NEAR FUTURE, WE REPLACE THESE FILES BY NLITE VERSIONS FROM IE6 OF COURSE.

Can you make an english version

Obviously that we could make it, but it will be a lot work in this case. I'm not happy for this. Maybe Gape or some will do this. I see that, your language is not english. You really want to see this in english version? Sadly, I don't know. If it will be people more, who will want it, then, we will make it. Maybe just you want to make an english version only.
specialbao1
I was just saying that you can speak english well.
How do we translate?
Is coding required or it is simple rolleyes.gif
spplus
Unofficial Service Pack Plus 4.2d - installer is in Bonus.rar\resources - standard windows installer is not finished. Some elements, that are copied, you should copy manually to specified folders if you have other language system, because some of folder names are not the same what we have. Check the quality & speed of system after installing this SP. Unbeliveble!

I too! fancy an English version.

I had it installed, and it seemed very promising.
I could not benefit from all the features, since it was in Polish--and had no clue what certain words meant---so I had to remove it.
Imagine though, if the 98se OS manifested to you in human form---and said--"Yes, please do this for Me, that I can live on" !!!!!

What are the differences with Gape's uSP?

The most important difference is the proffessionalism of the creator(s). The readme file of the Unofficial Service Pack Plus 4.2d looks like written by a child. I see no point in translating it to English, because of that. This was the main reason, why I did not tested the thing, so far.

For those who are willing to test it there are a few important information in the readme.

The pack was designed for Polish language version of the Windows 98 SE.

The Internel Explorer 5.0 should be installed. The newer IE versions can result in the system failure right after installation. It will be possible to install newer IE versions, after this pack was installed.

Many thanks for these words "The readme file of the Unofficial Service Pack Plus 4.2d looks like written by a child". The true is, this Readme.doc was written by me (Vavilon) 13-year old boy. I'm not a child! OK? So, if you can write better - correct it. But I don't understand this: proffessionalism or "proffessionalism" - what You meant that here. We know that you are our competition. Sfor, you have been warned by our friends many times. for ex. here:

You should have warn users about the requirements and limitations of your service pack. I just posted my opinions and some important informations taken from the readme file. You can easily see every good thread with a service pack or an update begins from some important informations. You did not care to provide any of it. The people trying to test your work will risk with their system stability or crash. Since this is an english language forum, almost noone will be able to read anything from the readme.

If someone applies the patch and the system will crash, the damnations will go towards you and the Polish people, who I am as well.

I have never used the softmania.pl forums, so far. So, I could not be warned in any ways over there. The choice of words in the personal mail you sent me is at least rude.

A 13 years old boy is a child for a 35 years old man. So, I had right, after all. I presented my personal opinion on this forum, now I'm being attacked for it. Fine, but do not you dare to threaten me.

Now to back up my opinion about Gape's service pack. There is a Polish version 2.1b of the pack with an automatic installer just as the english language version. I'm using it for quite a time, and I found it to be very useful and easy to apply.

Your service pack is just a set of separate updates with an instruction how to apply all the improvements. So, the Gape showed much more commitment and knowledge while creating his pack in my opinion.

The readme file of your pack is a bit chaotic with significant parts containing just "I had no will to write about it" (or equivalent) statement. At the end there ia a significant collections of jokes about some software producers. (If you would read something about the history you would have know it is not wise "to moon the giant". Netscape knows something about it). So in my personal opinion your pack is more a joke than a piece of work I would trust in.

At one side I see a good piece of work from the Pablo the polish translator of the Unofficial Service Pack 2.1b. The other side is your service pack with all it's limitations. So, my personal vote is going towards USP, Pablo and Gape.

It does not say your personal opinion truth! Competition! We have no time to write about changes. Sorry, Uploading for the first. Gape has no Readme in his SP. It is not professional. Some people, what downloaded SP where from, they don't know about changes. Readme needed in Gape's SP. Sadly! Microsoft has done remake of folders in Win98, but has forgotten do this in animations - just has copied from95. So, and Gape has "forgotten" to fix this problem but We not. Sadly, We have 2008 year and those old icons are ugly.

Hey guys, no need to get upset. smile.gif

@spplus,
I guess you can agree that this is an International (where English is used) Forum, and that UNLESS EXPLICITLY STATED everything posted here should be tested and working on English systems.

My guess is that Polish users of this Forum also check Polish Forums, so there is not much point about posting "nationalized" versions here.

Maybe you have right, maybe we should do this in English version first. And why We must do this for other languages? You must know one thing - all resources are available in this SP - just try to apply and there will be no problem.

In case of the Polish version of the USP 2.1b there is no need for the readme. After running a choice list with checkboxes is displayed. The usage is as simple as select and click "continue". In case of your pack I was unable to determine what to do with it. So, the first thing I looked in to was the readme file. The general impression I gained from reading was bad enough to leave it without installing.

If the usage is so simple as in the USP 2.1b, no readme file is necesary. The informations about the changes were provided at a web page I downloaded the package from. So, the lack of the readme file did not have any significant influence on my impression.

As for the animations. I was using Windows 95 for a very long time, and I have nothing against the animations used there. Also, I do not pay much attention to the system look, as long as it works right. So, what I'm looking for are updates providing solutions to serious problems. If there is a possibility to disable any just look improoving updates in the package, I do not install them.

No! No! No! You do not understand. I'm sorry! Win98 it is not Win95 and it is not same product. Sadly, there animations what We have maked are correct and dedicated for there systems! For 98/98SE/Me/2000. And not for 95, not for 2003 or Vista. I see that You are correct politically and you like what Microsoft has done. Microsoft's workers are criminals. Maybe You are Microsoft's worker. And good You know which Service Pack is better. Nevermind... My friend has come and now we will play some games on Mame32. I have no time for you now, sorry...
Sfor
I'm not the Microsoft worker. But I'm working with Microsoft products. I should like Microsoft, because my income is related with services I do to the Microsoft system users. So, It would be logical for me to like Microsoft.

I think I liked the Microsoft when there was just the DOS, around. Windows 3.1 did not change that opinion, I think. Still, my "love" was decreasing with time. And now, I do not like it at all.
cyberformer
Sfor and Spplus!!!
All this can be resolved once there is an English version!
When I had it on my PC, it did seem to run a lot faster, though not unbelievably!
But, I only installed one or two things provided, and did not go further--since I did not really know what the hell I would be doing. So perhaps, if I had installed everything--it might have run "unbelievably" fast!
What if this 13 year old fellow is a future computer genius that really helps our beloved Windows 98se?
All contentions should be put aside for the sake of Windows 98se!
Please work together for the sake of 98se!
Sfor
I took a look at the Softmania forums. There are significant amount of posts referring to the increasement of system speed, after the package installation.

I treat my computer in the same way I treat my stomach. So, I'm installing just the things I'm certain to be safe and useful.

In other words, I'm curious what's inside, and I'm going to test it, as soon as I'll get a sufficient amount of information about it.
cyberformer
Way to go!

Of course, if I did not have my original install CD I would not have dared it!
And when I removed what I had installed through the Ad-Remove, it worked! and left the system intact and well---
reverted almost all Polish words back into English---except a few here and there.
And the system I had used as a test case was a very clean install to begin with--meaning not very many programs installed other than a CD writing prog, and Doom Collectors Ed!

All the links above return "This page does not exist". unsure.gif

Hello Drugwash!

I am assuming you mean the links posted by the developer in the first post of this thread--as when I click on the link--I get something in Polish--on a page that no longer seems to download the service pack.
Either he is very upset and removed it, or he is preparing to update it with another version?
Drugwash
Yep, first time it opens in Polish but there's a couple of language switching buttons to the top-right. I switched to English and got the message above.

Anyway, by accident I managed to find the package at some alternative address, in some other thread. Haven't opened it yet.

I read through your topic and I can't help asking you this, Spplus. What do you mean by saying:

Windows 98 SE Unofficial Service Pack Plus 4.2d, SP4.2d download link; no WinXp, Vista needed... anymoore!

I have written so, in this context that nicer appearance has W98 now. In a near future - Of course. Poor people what they have Vista or WinXp.

WinXp = little sh*t; Vista = big sh*t.

If You like Vista or WinXp, you are death man!

spplusWhat are the differences with Gape's uSP?
Just try and than you see the differences.

How do you expect poeple to apreciate your work with anwsers like that??? realmad.gif

spplus, you should have at least a webpage on the internet where all changes done by your pack are listed: each new file, where they come from, their version, what they are for and what they are fixing etc.

Nobody in their right mind will install such a thing in the complete darkness you leave us in. (Except on "test computers").

I'm not saying you work is bad or anything, but please understand that documentation is very important when you release something to the public.
It's not a readme it's called a "complete changelog". Everybody does that.
I suppose that you keep such changelog for yourself: just upload a copy on your website. If you have no website open a free one.

Regards.

Spplus!

It is nice to see someone so fanatical about Windows 98se!
I only wish your work was in English!
I would rather have it in English, than to actually know what I am installing, since I
could always reinstall 98se if anything went very wrong.
There has only been about four times when I've messed something up and had to install the OS all over again. The other twenty times were because I enjoy doing it!

I think that anyone devoted to helping Win 9x is to be commended! if not outright worshiped.

I'm afraid you didn't understand:

I suggest (it's not a critic) that you make a list with:
-names of system files that your package replace (dll, exe, ocx etc)
-where these files come from (official update, windows ME, file rewritten by you etc)
-a short description why you included these files and what is the intended effect of these new files
-setting changes (registry settings, system.ini modification etc)

Can you do that for us?

Are You not a programmer? Are you a Win98's user just? Yes! I can do this.

@For others
I can't apply all of this things to english version, because I have not an original files from Win98SE EN. Maybe someone can upload some of essential files from english version.

No, I'm not a programmer and even if I was one, and especialy if I was one, I still would need such a list.
Those who would like to help you with english version, absolutely need such a list. (How else could they collaborate?)

Producing this list on the internet would be very very very good. welcome.gif

spplus,
What we need is a list of the changes made by your service pack. If it updates or replaces certain files, which ones, and what are the version numbers of those files. If it installs new files, what are they? If it changes registry entries, list the changes.

Most of the people here are more than just Win98 users. Some have programming skills. Most all have in depth knowledge of Win98. Many of the projects here are the work of several people. That wouldn't be possible if each one didn't itemize the changes their projects make to the operating system.

Some of our posts are provoke. We need many posts, because Bill must see & understand, that are many people witch don't want Vista. Thank you for cooperation. I repeat. WinXp, Vista it is a sh*t and for people what they have a small horizons. For these people, that microsoft has made laundering of brain by colored WinXp & Vista with maximum spam. Nobody wants to buy Vista. I don't want it for free even. You are on little pot of microsoft. If Microsoft will release a new system and They will tell You that it is a best, then You will go to shop to buy it. Nevermind. I forgive You, because You don't know what You doing.

spplus ,

I have been notified by other MSFN users that your forum contains inappropriate language and lack of instructions/description/warnings regarding your project:

1. Must not use curse words [not even abbreviated or spelled with wild cards] nor harsh/rude language of any kind in this forum, even if someone else provoked you.
There always is another polite/civilized way to deal with such offenders [you may wish to have a private email/PM exchange with them], and if nothing works, eventually report them to me through PM.
These are the MSFN forums rules, and everybody here has to abide by them:
http://www.msfn.org/board/Forum-Rules-Upda...ead-t18408.html
Failure to do so, will be met with cancelation of membership and respective person will be banned from these forums.
Please comply.

2. This is an English speaking forum, and we welcome [of course] people from all over the world [my native language is not English either newwink.gif], but you need to keep in mind that everybody has to know basic English to communicate here and must state precise specs/description/instructions of their projects, especially if those projects are meant for any languages other than English.
I understand that your project is for Polish Windows 98 SE editions.
Therefore you must state in your first post something like this (example, modify/add as you wish):

QUOTE
Unofficial Service Pack Plus 4.2d (SPP 4.2d) for Polish Windows 98 SE editions
(eventually add: translators welcome, please contact me if you would like to translate this project into other languages.) = and if you make an English version (for example), please make sure you use only English files from Win98 SE English editions.
Must add text about this requirement:
Must install Gape's Win98 SE SP 2.x Polish edition first, and only after that install SPP 4.2d Polish in order to fully benefit from SPP 4.2d !
ReadMe available in both English and Polish (eventually provide a separate link to your ReadMe text file(s), so users don't have to install the package in order to read it/them).
necessary warnings (please add more if necessary, to make sure users do not stop using your pack for lack of instructions):
Do NOT install on English Windows 98 SE editions, because errors/lockups may occur!
another warning:
Make sure you have Internet Explorer 5.x or newer already installed, otherwise EXPLORER.EXE [or whatever other file(s)] may lockup your computer(s)!
MS IE 5.x/6.0 links here [you may wish to provide them for convenience]:

Best wishes with your projects.

I don't have a polish OS so can't test myself, but as you removed most (all?) 48x48 icons, I wonder what would happen if you launch more of those built-in applications (such as Notepad, etc) and you ALT-TAB through them? unsure.gif

If I'm not mistaken, those icons are used to display currently running applications/modules in Task Manager.
