WASHINGTON -- Look out, music pirates: The recording industry wants the right to hack into your computer and delete your stolen MP3s.

It's no joke. Lobbyists for the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) tried to glue this hacking-authorization amendment onto a mammoth anti-terrorism bill that Congress approved last week.

An RIAA-drafted amendment according to a draft obtained by Wired News would immunize all copyright holders -- including the movie and e-book industry -- for any data losses caused by their hacking efforts or other computer intrusions "that are reasonably intended to impede or prevent" electronic piracy.

yes, I've heard of that before. There's only one big problem: what is if you ripped mp3s to your hard drive from legal cds u own, or downloaded them with iTunes, etc. How do they want to distinguisch between them? If they delete your songs that you legally purchased with iTunes, can you sue them?

I don't think it's gona happen though

I'd rather get sued then let them intrude... And anywayz, that's ILLEGAL! realmad.gif

The website of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has been hacked for the sixth time in six months. ....... According to wired.com, some security experts have suggested that the latest defacements indicate that the RIAA is clueless about technology.

Why are they being so stupid about it? Okay, dont you think they are taking this too far? They cant really hack into a computer even if they tried. We got firewalls (or am i just dreaming)...this is the government here.

But really invading someone's computer for mp3s, is just stupid. What if u copies songs frm Legal released CDS?

Looks like Im going to have d/c connect the internet, theres no way in hell i am letting the government see my computer.

Id like to see them try and bypass the NTFS i have on my my documents (c:) drive.

The part that is missing here is that the government is smart enough to know that there is now way that it's citizens will stand to have there rights to privacy taken away all at one time. You can not eat the whole cake in one bite. This is just the one of the first bites on the way too storm troopers walking into you house unannounced. Enjoy your cake......... biggrin.gif

This will never happen.

A) It's illegal
B) I highly doubt they'd have the resources to hack half the world in their spare time
C) 90% of the MAIN offenders out their are I.T Litterate. I know myself they'd have a hell of a time getting into my network just to delete a few MP3's. Sure you can spend all week trying but it comes back to the resources.

D) It's plain and simply the dumbest idea I've heard in a long time. Next you'll have software companies (ie microsoft) trying to make it legal for them to hack their customers for illegal software.
