Installing XP from USB-stick the easy way

1) Buy a Sandisk Cruzer with U3 functionality

2) Download Universal_Customizer from here http://www.hak5.org/packages/files/Universal_Customizer.zip

3) Make a (Nlite slimmed) XP bootable ISO see www.Nliteos.com
Can be slimmed down to the bone. Manual install etc. can be removed.

4) Install Universal_Customize

5) Copy ISO in ../BIN directory where Universal_Customizer is installed

6) Rename the ISO to U3CUSTOM.ISO, it can be any size fitting your USB-stick

7) Run Universal_Customizer, follow instructions, be patient!

8) Boot from USB-CDROM and start installing XP

Works perfectly

Many thanks to the heros who programmed Universal_Customizer 1.0.0.8 and Nliteos!!

I assume it works with a vlite iso too

And maybe, before using it, it would be better if you read the instructions in the Release Post:

Including the Warnings.

Dear Jaclaz,

i have worked with Universal_Customizer several times.

I have been writing SAFE ISO's to the stick and reinstalled U3. All worked fine.

Just give it a try before scaring poeple with "swichblade"-articles or wathever they are called

I don't think I scared anyone ph34r.gif

I do trust you on your word, but you see, you are at your first post here (BTW Welcome smile.gif) and provide a link to an app, without any details about it.

The "general" points I was trying to make was:
1) Since there are no instructions in the Download, it is ALWAYS a good thing to read them before using it
2) Whenever referencing to an app, it is a better practice to refer also to the Author website (if any), to the Release Thread (if any) or however to something where the user can read about the app and what it does, rather then a direct download link
3) It is UNDENIABLE that one of the .ISO inside the download contains an encrypted VB script that could do ANYTHING

The "specific" point, aimed to bledd's reply, is that newish U3 sticks have NOT ANYMORE the same structure as early ones, and thus the linked program may provide to be useless.
To use it one needs to "downgrade" to an older version of LP_installer.

As well, noone should be scared about it, but the user can save some time and headaches actually knowing what he is doing before doing it, as opposed as troubleshooting problems (if any) after they have presented themselves.

..and of course, you've probably never seen me actually scaring someone angel.gif , you'd be too scared to ever think about criticising my posts again.... tongue.gif

mg.eggink
Dear Jaclaz,
I responded to quick.

To the ISO's you are right. The one called U3custom is replaced by the users-self--made-iso,
but to be safe:
The user can remove u3custom.iso before copying his own, but dummy.iso should stay in place for the program to function.
To be more safe he can also completely remove the U3Custom-directory, Isoimage.exe from ../bin and ISOCreate.cmd in the ..dir

And of course :always use a self-prepared ISO.

I have looked a little bit further in the program.
The author is called: Tyrone Davis (U3Hacker) But I cannot find another website, with more commands/instructions.
As far as I can see it is a patched Memorex Launchpad Updater 1.0.0.8
The dummy.iso is in the ../bin from this version also and same size.
Patching is done in the way described here:
http://usb.smithtech.us/projects/u3updater.php

On the "downgrade" I can not comment because I reinstalled from the SandiskU3-website and it worked.
FYI: I used a Sandisk Micro Cruzer 2GB. Fresh out of the box.
But maybe it was in the store for ages ;-)

!!! The original instructions were found at http://usb.smithtech.us/projects/u3updater.php

1. Download the Memorex LaunchPad Updater v1.4.0.2
http://www.memorex.com/u3/upgrade_vista/

2. Download Universal Extractor
http://www.legroom.net/software/uniextract

3. Download Resource Hacker
http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/

4. Extract U3 Launchpad v1.4.0.2 Updater.exe to a folder with Universal Extractor

5. Open UpdaterCore.exe from the folder you extracted the LaunchPad Updater to
with Resource Hacker.

6. Expand "String Table". Expand "132". Click "1033". You should see

STRINGTABLE

Change 2109, "1.0.5.17\n" to 2109, "_LP_VERSION_"
and 2110, "bin\\Launchpad.iso" to 2110, "bin\\U3CUSTOM.iso"
Click the Compile Script button

This just allowed you to update the drive over and over. This fools the updater in to thinking the firmware isnt updated

7. Expand "133", Click "1033", you should see

Change the values to:

vendorId value="*"/>
<vendorName value="*"/>

Click the Compile Script button

9. Click File and Save

10. Delete Updater.pdb

11. Delete the LaunchPad.iso file in the bin subdirectory and place to one of your own
Rename it to U3CUSTOM.iso

12. Run CoreUpdater.exe to install the U3CUSTOM.iso to your U3 Drive,

or is this app just for USB drive options IN windows?

Yes, it's about boot from USB drive.

However BIOS has to support fake U3 CD-ROM drive.
Some BIOS boot from real USB CD-ROM drive, but not from a fake U3 CD-ROM drive.

@mg.eggink
Which machine and mother board do you use?

@jaclaz
I edited Memorex LaunchPad in the past. But BIOS dosn't support U3 CD-ROM drive.
Grub4dos booted from U3 data partition:
'cdrom --init' dosn't detect U3 CD-ROM drive too, well no BIOS support.

I have tried this. NoGo mad.gif
I bought a 4Gb disk(the right kind)
My ISO file is 2.3Gb.
I renamed it to U3CUSTOM.ISO. (under \bin).
Then I runed Universal_Customizer.exe.There are 5 steps in this program.
Step 3 Backup seems to fail evry time, and then the program halts.
If i run the ISOCreate.cmd, and then Universal_Customizer.exe it goes to step 4 and 5, but halts on 5 after that you have pulled the usb pen out and inserted it again.
Iam not abel to boot from the pen.And yes my mb is capebale of doing so.(DFI NF4)

Any ideas? whistling.gif

Try with a smallish ISO first.

Use nlite to reduce it, a "normal" nlited image is a few hundreds of Mbytes, usually less than 400.

IF it works, try with a bigger one, it is possible that there is some hardcoded size limit somewhere. unsure.gif

Hi,
what operating system is used??.
I think back-up should always work correctly if the pen is recognized.

Looking at the size of you ISO it is not XP.

I have read that the original Sandisk/Memorex program version 1.0.0.8 is not Vista compatible.

That could the reason for this newer version I believe:
Memorex LaunchPad Updater v1.4.0.2 is at http://www.memorex.com/u3/upgrade_vista/ ;-)

You will have to patch it yourself as described earlier in this threat.

Hi,
you can check if your ISO is bootable with programs like Magiciso.

Do this check before you write it to the stick.

Magiciso can not recognize the (files on?) theU3-CDROM.

Hey

I used the same ISO as I wrote to DVD. It has never failed.The thing is that when I tried to boot from the USB pen, it seems that the pen is found during post up....but the process seems to halt.That's why I was wondring about if it was possible to chck if the pen was bootable.
And thankyou for responding to my question.(And for ignoring my bad spelling shifty.gif )

Hi Floppy,

you wrote this earlier:

> I tried with iso only 450Mb---> The program finished ok.
> But I could not boot from pen, Message was "NO OPERATING SYSTEM"

Please test this ISO with MagicISO for bootebility.

The DVD might be OK, but you could not write it to the pen.
So that gives no information.
You succeeded to write the smaller ISO. But this one cannot boot from the pen.
So most probably the created ISO itself is not booteble.
That's why I asked to test this ISO for bootability.

Hi Floppy,
I am not an expert, but found this:

" The CD-ROM file system (CDRFS) is a read-only local file system implementation under the logical file system (LFS) layer. The CDRFS is stored on CD-ROM media. The DVD-ROM file system (UDFS) is a read-only file system stored on DVD-ROM media."

Maybe that is the reason for your usb-stick boot problem.

With Nlite you can easily create a bootable CDROM ISO

Hi,

Thanks for the guide.
I wonder in I can put other files in the main disk on key folder while doing this?

Also I would like to know, which method works for sure, the first one or the second one (with ResHack edit)?
renaud91
Hello,

I've juste tested the tutorial proposed and it worked fine for me with a Sandisk cruzer micro U3 with 2Gig ram.

I installed a full WinXP SP2 MSDN ISO file on my USB stick and I was able to boot on it (this iso does 700Mg).
I also tried with a generated ISO of True Image 11 with no problem at all (50Mg Iso).

Wanted to add 3 things/information to the discution :
----- Language -----
I also had the same problem as above, so keep in mind that :
1031 : For German
1033 : For english
1036 : For French
...... : So one

Language is writen at the start like this (this is entry 1031) :
STRINGTABLE
LANGUAGE LANG_GERMAN, SUBLANG_GERMAN
{
...
}
You must edit your language depending on OS language starting the exe program.

----- Parameter changed -----
If you check the difference between the prebuild Universal_Customizer and the one you can make your self with U3 Launchpad v1.4.0.2 Updater you can notice that the value for String Table
133 : 2121 is "__SIZE_OF_REPLACED_FILE_IN_ISO__" (not mentionned in tutorial)
132 : 2109 is "__LP_VERSION__" (with two "_" not one like in tutorial)

Adding or not those changes seems not to effect result so I just mention them in case.

----- Not working -----
Booting on U3 is a chalenge because "old" computers do not know how to do it. I tried my key on 4 computers.
5 years old : Not a chance, does not know how to detect USB at boot up
2~3 years old : depends, if your bios does not explicitly see your usb key as a CD-ROM drive, forget it it will never work. Typically if it sees only your USB as a HDD you get the "Not System / bootable Disk" error.
6 months old : it is just a bit frustation, because at boot, you must configure your bios in order to select the CD-ROM Usb key found by the bios. This means that the key must be pluged in before entering bios. In my case, my computer shows the key as two differents element : USB HDD and USB CDROM. You must select USB-CDROM for booting on ISO image.
What may be confusing is :
- sometimes it just says USB Micro Cruzer .... (no info about HDD or CDROM)
- sometimes you will see twice the same label (so peek one and if it does not work try the other one)
- if you remove your key, bios will not keep information, so next time you put your key back you will have to set back you bios option.

Best regards,
Renaud.
renaud91
Hello,

just wanted to know if someone try this with a Vista ISO (~less than 4Gig) ?
Does / Will it work ?

Best regards,
Renaud.
mg.eggink
Hello,

Renaud: thanx for the additions.
I tested on a Vostro 200 and used the F12-key in pre-boot-time to select the USB-CDROM

I suppose Vista will work with Vlite. Vlite creates a CDROM-iso. But I have not tested it.

Zach_H:
You can easely add other files to the ISO with Nlite or MagicISO ea

After reading the warnings of Jaclaz I would prefer method 2: build your own installer.

Hi Renaud91

if you already have vista installed, making a bootable Vista install-disk is easy.

Found this:

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS
Here's some step-by-step instructions on how we do this,
1. Acquire an ultra-fast USB 2.0 flash drive

2. Format USB Drive

3 Run CMD.EXE and type the following.
Note: This set of commands assumes that the USB flash drive is addressed as "disk 1".
you should double check that by doing a list of the disks (type "list disk") before cleaning it.
If you have multiple hard drives, like an SDFlash drive or a Multibay drive,
you could end up wiping your second drive using this command.

1. diskpart
2. select disk 1
3. clean
4. create partition primary
5. select partition 1
6. active
7. format fs=fat32
8. assign
9. exit

4 Copy Windows Vista's DVD ROM content to the Flash Drive

Simply issue the following command to start copying all the content from the Windows Vista DVD to your newly formatted high speed flash drive.
* xcopy d:\*.* /s/e/f e:\

Boot up the machine, have it boot off the USB drive, and watch how fast the installation completes.

However the Vista-method can be found on hundreds of sites.

I managed installing windows 2003 server(with sp1) from USB (Sandisk Cruzer Micro 1GB) with the help from this post to my diskless Asus Eee Box b202 PC. For all you out there trying to figure it out (took me 3 days, and only the suggestions in this post worked!), I hereby paste the combined steps I did (the info is in this post, but is easier to have it all together).

Note: I used the ISO image from the MSDN website containing Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition with SP1. I had to choose the second USB Cruzer device provided in the Bios and set it to CD-ROM emulation, while the first instance I had to set to Auto emulation. I used the original U3 software first to clear the USB stick. Some lines in the Hacked Launchpad Updater are not similar to the provided steps, but in the end just type what is provided in the steps and you will be allright. Also lines containing: <productId value= might be double in the scripts. In this case just kill these lines and keep one; edit it accordingly the steps and it will work.

Asus does not provide drivers for windows 2003, but it is possible to enable the hardware by using the provided(or downloadable) drivers.
Sometimes you can just use the setup, but sometimes(e.g. display driver) you have to install it manually and browse to the inf file in the driverset.

Good luck...

http://www.memorex.com/u3/upgrade_vista/

2. Download Universal Extractor
http://www.legroom.net/software/uniextract

3. Download Resource Hacker
http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/

4. Extract U3 Launchpad v1.4.0.2 Updater.exe to a folder with Universal Extractor

5. Open UpdaterCore.exe from the folder you extracted the LaunchPad Updater to
with Resource Hacker.

6. Expand "String Table". Expand "132". Click "1033". You should see

STRINGTABLE
LANGUAGE LANG_ENGLISH, SUBLANG_ENGLISH_US
{
2096, "Skip"
2097, "Skip All"
2098, "Retry"
2099, "Abort"
2100, "Wrong password"
2101, "%d attempt(s) before device is permanently locked"
2102, "Failed to set password. To try again, please remove your %2 and reinsert it."
2103, "%1 failed to format your %2"
2104, "Backing up your data..."
2105, "Updating the %2 firmware..."
2106, "Restoring your data ..."
2107, "Formatting your %2..."
2108, "Updating your version of the U3 Launchpad..."
2109, "1.0.5.17\n"
2110, "bin\\Launchpad.iso"
2111, "\\\\Launchpad.zip"
}

Change 2109, "1.0.5.17\n" to 2109, "_LP_VERSION_"
and 2110, "bin\\Launchpad.iso" to 2110, "bin\\U3CUSTOM.iso"
Click the Compile Script button

This just allowed you to update the drive over and over. This fools the updater in to thinking the firmware isnt updated

7. Expand "133", Click "1033", you should see
2123, "Memorex Inc."
2124, "Memorex Inc."
2125, "Memorex"

Change the values to:

2123, "*"
2124, "*"
2125, "*"
Click the Compile Script button

8. Expand "BIN", Expand "709", Click on "0", you should see

<vendorId value="2284"/>
<vendorName value="Memorex"/>
<productName value="Mini TravelDrive"/>
<productId value="22"/>

Change the values to:

vendorId value="*"/>
<vendorName value="*"/>
<productName value="*"/>
<productId value="*"/>

Click the Compile Script button

9. Click File and Save

10. Delete Updater.pdb

11. Delete the LaunchPad.iso file in the bin subdirectory and place to one of your own
Rename it to U3CUSTOM.iso

12. Run CoreUpdater.exe to install the U3CUSTOM.iso to your U3 Drive,
follow instructions, be patient!

13. Boot from USB-CDROM and start installing XP

you must configure your bios in order to select the CD-ROM Usb key found by the bios. This means that the key must be plugged in before entering bios.

Thanx,

this is 1.4.0.2 also:

http://www.verbatim.com/downloads/U3/u3upd...verbatim_us.exe

I believe almost all mentioned here:

http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/05/24/r...sh-smart-drive/

are 1.4.0.2 although they are named 1.0.5.5

I followed the instructions to the letter, changed my bios to boot using USB, CD/USB, Hard drive and it only reboots from the hard drive.

Is there a limit on how big the USB stick should be? I have a SanDisk Cruzer 16GB U3 Smart.

Look here: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=125138

I suppose this also is applicable for Sandisk-sticks.

"I managed to write a 1.5 Gb-ISO to the USB-stick 163/165-type. A Vlited Vista-image with additional
programs added with Magic Iso Maker.

4GB is the maximum possible because it is in CDFS-format"

So the ISO should not exceed 4Gb.

I tried this with my new Sandisk Cruzer Contour 16 GB.
Everything works fine except that the "HDD" part is only 4 MB after putting my iso file on the stick.
I tried to boot from the stick and it worked. But i can use only 4 megabytes of the ~13 gigabytes left.
You can use Launchpad Removal.exe to restore the full capacity but then the virtual cdrom is gone.

Any ideas?

I also tried to use LPInstaller from the Sandisk homepage. I managed to get small iso files on the stick (~5mb) but if i try a bigger file i just get an error message that the U3 launchpad setup failed.
