If anyone votes for Windows ME their IP should be banned from this board, or the entire internet.  Or a beating.  A beating by every board member sounds good too.

XP is by far the greatest, and anyone who disagrees obviously doesn't know how to maintain a computer.  I'm kind of disappointed to hear though that Longhorn MAY not be done until 2008.  I mean, that's still 5 years away.  I'm only 20 right now.  Heck, I could have a child by then.  Microsoft needs to get on the ball.  Or whatever it is that monopolistic corporations get on.

People that h8 Millenium Edititon are only people that can't control it or have never used it, people accross the road have used it for years and never had a problem.

BTW i voted XP Pro its the best

Win2K3 for me. I run a server so... Plus it is the newest OS and the most stable and I use active directory for home network and work. That is R2. smile.gif

Well besides longhorn of course which I should be running prime time soon. biggrin.gif

And Windows Me is a POS. Driver support is the worst ever. Period!!!! I would rather use DOS. ohmy.gif

ahahahahaha i never used XP home... when i got my computer, the first instinct was to get pro... cuz someone told me when it came out that pro contained a LOT more benefits... turned out to be true ^^ but i still go back to windows 98 sometimes... XP lags a bit =P
suryad
XP Home because I dont need to use all the features of XP Pro...but I hear Windows 2003 is better...so I just voted for XP Home.
enod
The best choice for personal use is XP Pro, while 2k3 is better for servers.
I use them both, one in my home and one in my office.
MDMA
XP Pro and the worst of all time has to be 'Me' so many bugs blink.gif

Can't believe this one made it so long here. I moved this thread because I believe it's going to be a bit biased in the Windows XP section. Let's see if we can get a more rounded audience in the Polls section.

welcome.gif i choose xpprosp2 but secondly 98se for ease of operation i agree with unforgiven that a slight advantage to xp simply because folk will be scare to admit to anything lower .a true answer would be nice.

I'd have to vote for 98/SE with SP1 and Sp2 as my all-time favorite.
It still runs on five out of my six (running) computers.

Well, that was then and this is NOW.

XP home is a crippled-up version of XP, (it needs a walker) where XP-Pro is the Real Deal, the Whole Enchelada, the Real McCoy.

It still comes out of the box running at about 30% of max efficiency, due to all the junk installed by default.
I can add 100%+ to its efficiency by disabling about twenty services and then tweaking the registry to match the ram to the OS. Any decent programmer could have done this in the basic OS. Too bad they were too busy playing with their Easter Eggs.

I always set the GUI to 'Look-Like' 98 (classic style).
Most older users find that more "User Friendly".

Cheers,

Easy, Windows 2000:

- More stable robust than the 9X OSes.
- Adds Plug and play and other modern features NT doesn't have.
- Less bloat than XP and variants.

That said, for a laptop user, XP is superior...Wireless Zero Config is just great (anyone know how to add it to Windows 2000? smile.gif?)

I have a project laptop on the way...a Toshiba Portege 320CT (P266MMX, 96MB RAM, 1024x600 16:9 TFT screen, with external floppy and CD-ROM dock for $100). My plan is to nLite or by hand whack a 2000 install and set it up as an everyday e-mail/web/MP3/MPEG machine. Have a ZV MPEG decoder card on the way too and it will get a 5400rpm 20GB HD. It will hopefully make for a pretty cheap 10.4" portable DVD player that does computing tasks as well. Should be a fun project.

Just found the forums here, looks like a nice place to hang out.

XP Pro for me!
Lazy8
Woo hoo--topic revival!

You guys are spoiled on XP Pro. I wonder how many have knocked WinMe without even trying it...should be required study for n00bs. Throw 'em in the deep end, and let the floaters swim to XP, I say.
LLXX
It's interesting that more liked Windows 3.11 than Windows 95... and more liked ME than 95!

My favorite would be a customised 98se system.
Martijn
XP Home for me, I don't really need all that 'extra' stuff that comes with Pro, like ISS (I just install WAMP on Home and I'm done) smile.gif
Angelico_Payne
nlited XP pro, use 98se stripped with NTFS support for servicing and administration only

x64 is great, hope more people start using it more soon thumbup.gif
ringfinger
Have to go with Win2k. Much more stable OS across the board, less bloat...
Rocky619
I like Windows XP Pro the best right now! that's until they release Windows Vista hehe laugh.gif
BIGbadjohn
Win XP family it has to be. Started on Win98, upgraded to XP Home and now using XP Pro SP2. welcome.gif

It really depends who is using it! for example

Windows 3.1 for my great grandpa
Windows 95 for my Grandpa
Windows 98 for the person whose behind the times
Windows ME for the id*** (huh? who said that newwink.gif )
Xp Home for Me
Xp Pro for my homeroom teacher (computer Geek) jkjk i think I'm more of a Geek than him I've taken INfo pRo (computer class) 4 times in a row laugh.gif (but he teaches it so i don't know what to think) ha ha poor ken (my teachers name), stuck with me for 4 classes laugh.gif
Thunderbolt 2864
Well, I picked Windows XP Pro. Very stable, and reliable at most times.
I like Win2K as well.
Windows 98 was good back then, though I'm not using it anymore.
Windows ME sucks. You know why.
Windows 95 was alright I guess.
doakwolf
98 was a pain to manage - i'm a network tech. and let's say XP pro has made my life a lot easier!

haven't really used many other OSs
hbinded
I have about 6 versions of wind0ws on my hd, but I normally use the pro one. I guess I just prefer it! thumbup.gif

Win2k is the best much more stable an XP but i use XP anyway

I would not say win2k is more stable but it use less ram and does run more win9x software and games.
I like win2k but dont like the GUI
Fulvian

XP can't run some software I have so i'm all for windows98se! (You get the software for the software, makes sense). plus i hear that win98 does integer operations faster? dunno. I also read somewhere that 98 is good with small files while xp is good with large files (or am i getting confused between NTFS and Fat32 O_O;?) oh well, i'm running 98 right now! but there's 1 prob, can't play thief3. 98 isn't supported sad.gif and thus begins my having to go to the xp. personally, i find windows 98 to change between programs faster than xp. that's just my 2 cents.

Okih - you might be interested in this link then.

You can still play Thief 3 on windows 98se smile.gif

I prefer 2k for all general applications, for gaming XP pro.
hem852
Windows 2k for me partly because its like XP without the 'fat' but mainly because it runs my fave game of all time Settlers 3 with all the add on's. thumbup.gif XP falls over when you add the expansion packs wacko.gif

I like 'functional without flab' and Win2k fits the bill perfectly whereas everything since then is just getting fatter and fatter.

I'm at a tie between XP and 98. XP is better because it handles memory well and has NTFS but 98 was always a champ for me too. I also like 2003 because of all the things you can do with it. But I choose XP Pro on this poll.
otetz
To me there is nothing better than Windows 2000. Could have been XP but it wouldn't run a FoxPro app for DOS which is crucial in my case. Plus, win2k has no bloatware.
Yankee85
Vista isn't in the list tongue.gif

anonymous_user
If you guys look at the date of the poll (first post) youd see why theres no Vista rolleyes.gif
G8YMW
Vista isnt in the list because it is positively awful.
Im voting 98SE2ME
Angel Blue01
Vista.

I love Win2k
donutbandit
W2K. I ran it until recently. It's starting to get long in the tooth, and software developers are starting to not support it. I reluctantly switched to XP, and trimmed it down to resemble W2K as much as possible.

For Win9x, ME was an absolute champ once it was configured properly. I ran it for 5 years with absolutely no problems. All it took was a little knowhow and patience. The engine was superior to 98 - it was stuff like IE 5.5 and System Restore that caused the problems.
