what i have used
1) windows 3.1
2)windows for workgroups
3)windows nt 3.1 and 3.51
4)windows 95 and 98reg
5)windows nt 4.0
6)windows 2000
7)windows xp
the ones i really liked was 3.51 cause it was the last os M$ made with a unix like interface and 2000 xp im still getting use too it's way to bloated and its a resource hog as well

First let me start by saying METALLICA RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Obviously XP is the man for everyday use... But 2K is the man when it comes to maintaining a network as long as ut not on it all day cause to get anything done u haver to know what ur doing and it takes a lot more to install and keep it running smooth. Clearing logs and blah blah blah. Anyone that uses XP home should be bannished from earth, cause it really sux!! and thats how I really feel...lol

My favorite is windows 99, they should have used it instead of what became windows me.
http://air101.soft-welt.de/Win99.html. I still got it on cd. Despite what some people say it's real.

Win98 was most fun system, not best doh but was simple, clean and small in size, and if u like me use softice then win98 is only system really was made for it!

I find WinXP more friendly when it comes to configuring networks and stuff. Not saying it can't be done in 2k, but I just prefer XP on it.
One thing I don't like about Windows (ME onwards) is that you can never format the drive properly.
I have to revert to using my Win98 Boot Disk to format my HD in order to find and correct errors on the drive.

I definately agree XP Pro is the best OS, but surely thats obvious because its the newest and has the most pleasing refinements over previous operating systems.
I have to disagree with most of your opinions on Windows ME, sure its no great OS but its not that bad either. I think its reputation has been set by a few who have had bad experiences and the rest have followed the opinion. If there was no XP, then ME/98 would be ruling because there would have been reliability/functional improvements over time. Imagine XP with no service pack and no patches, it would be the most insecure OS ever.
I used ME for a couple of years before making a new PC with XP Pro, I never had any issues with ME. Im not one for bandwagon thinking.

WinXP PRO but Win2K3 is so better because security is higher (exemple = IIS 6 works with a less powerfull acces than before like on older version i mean winXP & older it was working with SYSTEM acces so ........)
really those 2 products are very cool but prefere win 2k3

LINUX POWER nothing better in fact but question was about microsoft

I would have to agree with the opinions of ME.
ME has a bad reputation. But it really depends on what you do with it. I usually puch my PC to the limits and ME broke everytime. My brother only played a few games, and chatted online and had no problems at all.
I still prefer 98 for gaming (I like my classic DOS games), but XP for most other thigns.

XP can't run some software I have so i'm all for windows98se! (You get the software for the software, makes sense). plus i hear that win98 does integer operations faster? dunno. I also read somewhere that 98 is good with small files while xp is good with large files (or am i getting confused between NTFS and Fat32 O_O;?) oh well, i'm running 98 right now! but there's 1 prob, can't play thief3. 98 isn't supported

and thus begins my having to go to the xp. personally, i find windows 98 to change between programs faster than xp. that's just my 2 cents.

Tough choice, but I would say Windows XP Pro. I have another computer that is slower in terms of megahertz but is overall a lot faster because it is using Windows 98SE. I don't do anything that requires really high security, but I have had to restore my hd using images a couple times on XP Pro.
XP Pro

its the most customizable

I agree with wildkat.
@Alanoll:
I push my PC (and other machines which I get access to) to the *ABSOLUTE* limits, and winME invariably handled better than 98/98se.

okay but u guys are forgetting that windows 2000 exists

anyways I think "if xp did not exist" is not really an option. its obvious that there was going to be another version of windows. and we although there are at least 5 years to its release, know that longhorn will exist right?
anyways I think this "best os" has been discussed over and over again for nothing. most often the latest product is better than the previous ones.
u could have comparisons between windows/linux/unix/mac osx/etc.. but amongst ms os's xp pro is going to be the winner for computers that are at least p3/k7 etc...

hey now.....
I voted for Windows 98.
But i do have 4 licenses for Windows XP Pro. So....umm....yeah. I believe I'm legit. Until I install on 5 computers.....
I personally believe that if you truly did purchase it, there should be a way to disable activation legally. Personal Corp key or something that gets logged by WU or something.....

Legal? Why yes. 10 Installs of XP Pro, Office2K3, Outlook2K3, Publisher2K3, Visio2K3, Mappoint2K3, Project2K3, and single installs of W2K3 server, 2K3 Exchange, SQL 2K, SBS, ISA Server 2K, MIS2K2, and Sharepoint Portal Server /w 10CAL's on software (Where applicable).
All for $299.

Yeah, the MS Action Pack.

I haven't had any problems. In fact I'm getting one of my customers on the program so he can be legit for his new office. Paying $300 initially, then renewing the subscription for $200 every year, more than pays for itself. Every quarter MS sends out any updated software for your subscription. Very, VERY good deal if you are concerned about staying legal in this day and age.
