oao
I have a home network of two laptops which share an internet access wirelessly
via a 2Wire router. One runs Windows 2000 and has a HP Deskjet 5850 printer connected
via a USB cable; the other runs Vista.

I have enabled File and Printer sharing on the 2000 computer and checked
all the network setting on the Vista, and they seem OK.

I installed the substitute Vista driver for the printer (5600) on the Vista
laptop as per HP instructions and now am trying to set it up to print off the remote printer. Based on
instructions received from users that made this work I do the following:

Control Panel|Printers|5600 Properties|Ports|Add port|Local port|New Port|\\computername\printername

where computername and printername are the names on the network respectively.

I then get:

Logon Failure: Unknown user name or incorrect password

I read all the info on the Net about this error and found nothing that pertains
to my situation, or that solved the problem.

Please advise.

Thanks.

Put them both on a workgroup and creating a matching account, with a matching password on both machines. That should work.

Thanks
oao
They are both on the same workgroup.

So if there is an user X with password Y on the Vista computer and I add the same user X with password Y on the XP computer, this should work?

oao
I did create the account and now when I try to add the port to the printer I get:

The network path was not found.

Hi oao

I do not know if I really understood what is going on but the normal steps after installing the driver locally on the w2ks and additional driver should be only to go on your vista and had new printer, choose network printer and you should be able to find it and map it to the vista client. If you can not find it you can also specify the path where in which server the printer is in. If at this stage you get connection to the print server then you should be fine.

Please keep in mind that you must share the driver on the file server and give permitions to your user. Both the server one and the remote user. Some common problems with XP XP3 may happen on vista when you can not access the driver on the file server, then please make sure that "Manage Documents" permition is setup for the users.

I do not know if this really help or answer your question. Maybe you already did all this:)

If you get network path not found try \\IP\Printer instead of \\Name\printer and see if it works

Turns out that after i created the new account on the xp laptop and rebooted, forgot that ZoneAlarm started and that caused the network path not to be found. With ZA off I was able to add the network port to the Vista laptop and I can now print.

So now the question is how can I configure ZA to let me print, otherwise I have to stop it each time I want to print. I could not find any info on how to do that. Any ideas?

Incidentally, there is conflicting info on whether both hardware and software firewalls should be on. Some say the router's is enough, others say it's safer to have both, as they do different things.

I am not big expert with ZA but I believe it works as firewall. Do you know if you can had ports to secure zone? If yes you should had the port you are using. normally I would add port 515, 9100. Their default ports for print protocol.

I also found this information, maybe you can find it useful

Thanks.

The free ZA does not allow port forwarding.
eyeball
you need to allow ports 137-139 i believe for print sharing through a firewall.

Thanks

EDIT: that should be 137-139 TCP newwink.gif
oao
Yes, I know.

But Zone Alarm free does not let you to forward ports. It lets you only specify applications that should go through.

Ok, i didnt know that. Thats all i can suggest then im afraid if you are using Zonealarm. We know what needs to be done but cant do it because of ZA.... Il leave it with you newwink.gif

Actually, I was wrong. ZA has a configuration feature which allows specifying the printer's IP. So now I can print.

I am happy you can already print:)

here is what you could find on the link. For me the link works ok.

"Hi!
If you shut down ZASS are you able to print?
If yes, then try to reset the ZA settings.

If not, there is something else than ZA blocking the printer.

To reset the settings:

1.) Hold down the Ctrl and Shift keys together
2.) Right click on the ZA icon near your clock
3.) Choose 'Reset' from the box that comes up
4.) Choose Yes on the Reset Settings dialog box
5.) When prompted, choose OK to restart your system
6.) Follow the on screen configuration prompts after reboot"
