What is everyones favorite video playing program? For this thread I would like everyone to follow a few simple rules. I would like to see the version number of the program that you like, a download location, and a reason of why this is your favorite Video Player Program.
1. Program and version number
2. download location
3. Reason

I have 2 favorites
VLC player 8.6i
http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/0.8.6i/win32/
I really like the 7z version of this because it is a standalone program. I prefer not to install programs when possible.

K-Lite Codec Pack 4.1.7 STANDARD
http://www.free-codecs.com/K_lite_codec_pack_download.htm
I use a custom version of this with the " c:\klmcodec.exe -MakeUnattended " command. This is really useful for unattended installations of XP.

I like VLC Media Player.

1. VLC Media Player
2. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
3. Light weight and plays almost anything.

Have you taken a look at either of these superb freeware offerings:
anonymous_user
Zoom Player
http://www.inmatrix.com/files/zoomplayer_download.shtml
It has context menus that work flawlessly.
Nexus_06
Media Player Classic + FFDSHOW + CoreAVC

never needed anything else...

Yes, as above, then my preffered playback solution is:

MPC for it's nice clean looks and powerfull backend, coupled together with ffdshow tryouts for decoding/post-processing/subtitling and then optionally Haali Media Splitter(if wanting a more advanced splitter than MPC's internal MP4/MKV/OGM/AVI source filters) and VSFilter(if wanting a more advanced subtitle filter than the internal ones of ffdshow and MPC)...

clsid's MPC builds from guliverkli2 project (last rev. from Gabest with updated libs, patches and small changes):
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.p...ckage_id=245753

Or -

casimir666's MPC mod: MPC-HC (last rev. from Gabest with updated libs, patches and also new development, like e.g. DXVA enabled H264 decoder, EVR renderer and fullscreen d3d anti-tearing mode etc):
http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/

Coupled with -

ffdshow tryouts:
http://ffdshow-tryout.sourceforge.net/

And optionally -

Haali Media Splitter:
http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/MatroskaSplitter.exe

VSFilter:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.p...lease_id=541232

For audio, then of-course: foobar2000
yken
Gom player
footballking3420
MPlayer (latest optimized Gianluigi Tiesi build)

Why? It plays everything I throw at it, it's compiled for my processors instructions, and I'm a sucker for command line programs.

my pick:
  • mpc (hc or not) as a player
  • ffdshow, for most mpeg4 asp formats
  • coreavc, for h.264/mpeg4 avc files
  • ac3filter, for ac3 audio
  • haali splitter, as a splitter
  • directvobsub, for subs
  • several different mpeg2 codecs (vista's is pretty decent though)

x264 & xvid also installed, but just for encoding (lots of other tools for that)

1. VLC Media Player
2. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
3. fast free best for .avi files

I use the installer version of VLC

CODE
videolan.org

and i also use the Cole2k Codec Pack (this uses FFDShow as the decoder)

32bit OS only
CODE
http://www.cole2k.net/?download=CP-S

With these two tiny bits of kit I have never ever needed anything else to play and sort of media file.

VLC uses FFmpeg's libavcodec directly and doesen't support DShow decoders like ffdshow...

VLC uses internal codecs so you don't need any DirectShow ones.

ffdshow tryouts also decodes AC3, MPEG2 and H.264. It has subtitle support too.

Media Player Classic includes splitters for FLV, MKV, MP4, 3GP and others.

CCCP + WMP

VLC 0.9

Both do a fine job on my system.

I use Windows Media Player and Winamp

edit: I forgot I use Nero ShowTime Essentials and CyberLink PowerDVD also.

Using MPC Classic from the K-Lite codec pack. Works like a dream, can play any media format known to man.

I previously used the MPC version from the guliverkli2 project, since i didn't though that i had any use of the new functionality in MPC-HC, as i didn't use the VMR renderers and hence, had no use for the D3D full-screen anti-tearing mode,(i preffer the overlay mixer renderer for it's speed, color-corectness and stability), and since i didn't have any use for the EVR renderer either, and finally since my video card where to old to use bitsreamed H.264 DXVA mode, and then i thought that i could just as well use the more "vanilla" MPC version, so as to avoid possible newly introduced bugs from the new features implemented in MPC-HC...

However, i have just first now discovered that MPC-HC also has added internal Xvid/DivX(mpeg4-asp) decoding from FFmpeg's libavcodec library(the same as ffdshow uses), in addition to the H.264 and VC-1 decoders that i allready knew about, so this means that MPC now resembles MPlayer in that it with a single executable can decode Xvid, DivX, H.264, AC3, DTS, AAC etc. smile.gif

So with MPC-HC, then ffdshow is now also optional, if not using it's post-processing features, or some of it's other supported formats which MPC dosen't support, that is...

Sorry, you all of course now this allready, but i just found out about it know, as it wasen't listed as a new feature on the MPC-HC homepage, except in the changelog section...
