SAN DIEGO (AP) -- A home infested with cockroaches and rats exploded when a pilot light ignited the fumes emitted by 19 "bug bomb" foggers, police said.
The explosion Wednesday morning blew apart the 470-square-foot home of Aurelia Oliveras and sent Christmas decorations into the street. No one was injured.
"We are very lucky someone wasn't killed," said Capt. Steve Salaz of the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
Damage was estimated at more than $150,000.
Oliveras said she had just left the house and was in the back yard with her husband and 2-year-old daughter when the blast occurred.
"We had so many cockroaches and rats inside. That's why we did it," she said.
Firefighters say one can is more than enough for a 600-square-foot home.
