I have got Windows xp on c drive and i want to instal linux on d drive

yes you can, but you will a swap partition too:


|--C-------------------||--D----------||---Swap---|

or as i prefer to do it:


|--C-------------------||--Linux-Boot--||--Linux----------||---swap---|

you need to be more specific, for all i know your D drive could be a cd rom

i'll guess it's a second hard disk which is empty, which in that case it is completly possible
