I'm trying to install XP on this tablet pc but I'm having a hard time succeeding ! Installing Seven through PXE or Ubuntu from USB was a piece of cake but XP sure is a challenge, whether I choose the PXE or USB method.

The PXE method works but when I launch the setup.exe command, the setup screen doesn't allow installation ("Install XP" is grey and unclickable). Launching winnt32.exe allows me to enter the installation but it stops after the preparation and before the actual install process.

I followed the USB tutorials from this board, it's actually the only method that almost worked. I've got several versions of XP, some of them create bootable USB key, some others don't for no reason. When it does work, installation process issues changes depending on...on I don't know what ! Sometimes the very same xp version will install without a problem, sometimes it stops before installation saying that an important file is missing, sometimes the installation process is stopped by yet again missing files that I have to skip to continue.
Anyway, when I do manage to install all the way through, I will nonetheless get a major error message on first boot (I'm talking of the one where you have to select your username, etc) saying that Windows can't boot from the hard drive (I do install on the regular C: drive).

Can someone help me ? Believe me, I've read several tutorials from this board but I have to say, they are quite "esoteric" when they want; hard to figure out what's important and what to do, when. They've been a great help and I used them to explore by myself but I think I really need you now...

What tutorial did you follow?
Have you checked RAM, preferably by removing one or another piece of RAM? I know you managed to install Ubuntu and 7, but anyway, it still makes sense.
Have you confirmed hard disk is in good shape indeed?

You would have to stick with one method and tell us what exactly happens.

By Ram, do you mean the Random-Access Memory ? Well, I did add 1GB on the device before trying to install XP but would it actually have an effect ?
I can't be sure that the HardDrive is in top condition as I received the device from a friend. Nevertheless, because Ubuntu and Seven (and most probably Vista) install without problem, I would say that it does work.


I followed the method from this tutorial. What I did :

- Copied the content of a Windows XP SP2 French in a "xp" directory on C:
- Launched USB_MultiBoot_10.cmd.
- Formatted USB stick using HP USB Disk Storage
- In the main menu, pointed to source patch to the xp directory
- Gave USB target
- Proceeded to multiboot and copied sources to USB stick
- When asked, copied XP+extras
- When asked, gave the USB a U: Boot Disk status

Once finished, I plugged the stick in the tablet device and selected the first option on boot screen. Installation process starts fine : I created a new C: partition for Xp to install on, formatted the hard drive and...when the actual installation starts, I get an error message saying that I have a "0 value to the section line [SourceDiskFiles], with the key binifix4.cmd". Only choice is to quit. Note that I think that on previous attempts, the corrupted file mentioned was different.


When I use the same method with WinXP SP3 French edition, the installation process works but with majors errors : impossible to create or format the C: partition (the new installation just erases the old one), regular messages of missing files that eventually causes the graphic installation on reboot to fail. Note that when I reboot, I then select the second option from the boot screen to proceed with a regular boot in order to access the graphic installation process. Is that correct ?

Yes and yes. Remove the newly added RAM and try setup again.

Try WinSetupFromUSB as well.

Well something occurred to me when typing my previous thread : the french edition I always used. I manage to find an old XP CD in English and everything worked fine...
