Since we Brits already hold the land speed record as a result of jet-powered Thrust SSC going supersonic in 1997, it seems only natural that we should attempt to be the first nation to break the sound barrier with a petrol-driven reciprocating-engined vehicle.

That at least appears to be what sales manager Peter O’Flynn was attempting when clocked at an impressive 406mph (653kmph) by a speed camera in Cheshire.
The achievement becomes even more admirable when we learn that Peter was at the time at the controls of a humble Peugot 406, until now thought to have a top speed of 129mph.

Heroic Peter is modest about his tremendous effort, insisting: "I rarely speed and it’s safe to say I’ll contest this." Officials, however, say Mr O’Flynn still faces prosecution despite the obvious attack of insanity which afflicted it speed (sorry, safety) camera.

This superb piece of bureaucratic madness is just the latest chapter in the ongoing saga of the government's war against speeding motorists. We look forward with eager anticipation to police slapping the cuffs on the first OAP to reach hypersonic velocities in a battery-powered disabled buggy.

French car.. sold all over EU. its a British driver, caught by a stupid **** GATSO camera (dont they have GATSO cams in USA?)

the camera is probably out of line with the white lines drawn on the road. see if someone "accidentally" reversed into a GATSO camera and just ever so slightly knocked it out of line, by so much as a few mm, its readings will all come out goofy and be inadmissable in court.

some incident happened in Turkey(at least that's what I heard):
some guy with a bike was riding like crazy at 324km/h. he ran through the radar. the cops stopped him and they couldn't believe the speed he was at. So they wanted him to do it again and this time he came at 326km/h smile.gif they were amazed
though I don't know if they ever ticketed him. maybe a ride on the bike tongue.gif
(stuff like this happens biggrin.gif, there are many street races going on in Turkey.)

No its already like that in the UK from living with terrorism for over 25 years.

I know someone who works with Sheffield city center council (local Gov.)

i once was taken into one of their camera management rooms, a whole wall covered in TV screens with people monitoring them 24/7, both civilians and police.

The whole city is covered in cameras, they can zoom them, pan them. They have direct link with the police and helicopter crews, and can listen to police radio as well as talk to the police on the ground to direct them to areas of interest.

while i was there some guy was seen near a car park looking suspicous, dark hoody top on and looking around him all the time, obviously not a driver. cop car was sent to park in the car park and watch him for a bit before searching him.

they can even control the traffic lights in there, to let police and other services through, or when theres football matches on or concerts etc, they can delay one lot of traffic to let.. say, the away team leave the city quickly and easily to minimise voilence etc.

freaky stuff.

They most certainly do have cameras like this in the US. I am not sure if they are called the same thing, but there are places even here in Indiana that if you drive past one of these you will get a ticket in the mail if you were speeding.
